Your prayer has come before the Lord and before His people, and we have heard the weight of this long affliction which you have carried concerning ### and your household.
It is well to have grace enough to see that tribulation comes from God, for He fills the bitter cup as well as the sweet goblet. Troubles do not spring out of the dust, neither does affliction grow up from the ground, but the Lord Himself kindles the fiery furnace and sits as a Refiner at the door. Your afflictions may come distinctly from man, as the result of envy and malice, and yet they may come with even greater certainty from the Lord and may be the necessary outcome of His special love to you. For this reason we may wisely moderate our anger against second causes, and look beyond the instrument to the hand of our Father, who will make even the sharpest smart to be profitable.
Let it never be forgotten that in all that God does, He acts from good reasons, and that deliverance from spiritual bondage is solely by the power of God. It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance of a sinner from the pit through a ransom if God had not thought of it. Yet God has not only invented a way of deliverance, but He has found a ransom, so that it is a gift of Divine Love. Then He is gracious unto him, and says, Deliver him from going down to the pit, I have found a ransom. That ransom is the precious blood of Jesus, by which we overcome, as you have rightly pleaded from Revelation 12:11. Deliverance from the power of darkness is as much the work of God as deliverance from the guilt of sin, and we must look to our heavenly Father altogether and alone for it.
The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble. Generous rulers provided strongholds for their people, mountain fastnesses where they might be sheltered from marauders, and far more does the righteous man find in his God all that the wealthy man finds in his substance and a vast deal more. The name of the Lord is a strong tower, the righteous run into it and are safe. When mental oppression and fear press upon you, when you feel as though strongholds were raised against your mind, remember that the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds, as it is written in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed, according to John 8:36. He has taught many of His people the mischief that comes from the fascinating power of sin and darkness, and now temptations and harassments tempt in vain when the soul has fled to Christ.
Concerning ###, you do well to stand upon Zechariah 3:2, The Lord rebuke thee, O Satan, and upon Romans 12:19, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord. We are not to avenge ourselves, nor to seek a back door by which to escape from our troubles through our own bitter retaliation. The Lord rebukes, the Lord repays, and we leave the matter in His hands. This is consistent with wisdom and with love. Where there has been severe wrong and manipulation, and where harassment and stalking continue, it is right to seek the Lord's protection, to maintain needful boundaries, and to forgive as Christ has forgiven us without returning to a place of harm. Pride, envy and malice are foul diseases of the fallen heart, and God deals with men that He may hide pride from man and keep back his soul from the pit.
Therefore we join you in prayer, that the Lord would rebuke every work of envy and spiritual harassment directed against you and your household, that He would pull down every mental stronghold and cancel every attempt to control or oppress your minds, that He would correct what is wrong and guard you from going down to the pit, that He would keep you from evil company and from the attacks of old sins and from the adversary. We cover you not with any merit of your own, for you can do nothing and you know it, but with the blood of the Lamb, the ransom which God Himself has found and given. May He keep back your soul from the pit and your life from perishing, and chasten and sustain you upon your bed until you can say with the Psalmist, I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord.
Abide in Christ, who alone is salvation, walk in daily prayer and in the Word, keep close fellowship with faithful believers who can watch with you, and if harassment takes earthly form, seek also the lawful protection which God has ordained for the peace of households. The Lord who delivered Israel with a mighty hand will loosen the captive still. Look to Him, trust His goodness in the day of trouble, and you shall have songs of deliverance and declare His works to others who are yet in the furnace.
