Daughters family

Beloved of All
my daughter ###’s husband die in a motorcycle accident ### years ago. The life before he died was miserable too. He beat her cheated on her and turned her kids against her. She was the only one that worked full time. She took care of everyone but was treated very badly. Some how she still loved him. They went to church occasionally. They are all depressed and angry. The kids disrespected her yell and scream. Go to school about ### days a week. The son curses a lot very quickly screaming and yelling. Expects the family to revolve around him. He is so angry you can’t say anything to him without him exploding on you with his rage. The daughter is not quite as bad more of a gentle person but does not show love towards her mom. They had counseling immediately after the death of their father/husband. But none of them really let themselves be helped. Me being the grandma on the mother side try to speak to the about Gods love but they reject what ever I have to say. Not on expected, Jesus was by his village. My daughter has a drinking problem not an everyday drinker at least not when I visit her. She lives ### hours away. So I come visit when I can usually every ### months. I wish it could be more. The kids don’t want to move so she won’t, plus it is less expensive where she lives. She has so much in her plate. Overwhelmed all the time. She says she prays. I think it’s anger asking for things to get easier. My heart breaks for them.

We hear the deep ache in your heart for your daughter and your grandchildren and we join you in bringing them before the throne of grace in Jesus' name. We carry this burden with you, asking for God's will to be done in their lives and for His healing to break through years of pain, anger and rejection.

What your daughter endured in her marriage was evil and contrary to God's design for marriage. A husband is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church and to live with her in an understanding way, not to beat her or commit adultery, and those sins left deep wounds on her and on her children. The Lord sees what was done to her and He is close to the brokenhearted. Psalm 34:18 says Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 147:3 says He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. We also grieve with you over the death of her husband and the miserable life before it, and we know that somehow still loving him shows how complex and deep those wounds are, but God can heal even that tangled grief.

We must lovingly speak the truth about what is happening now in that home because God calls us to turn from what harms us. The disrespect, yelling, screaming and cursing from her son and the coldness from her daughter toward their mother is sin and it grieves the Lord. Exodus 20:12 says Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you. Ephesians 6:1-3 says Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. The rage and quick anger that explodes over every word is also something God warns us about. Ephesians 4:26-27 says Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, and don’t give place to the devil. James 1:19-20 says let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. And Colossians 3:8 says put away all these, anger, wrath, malice, slander, and filthy language out of your mouth. This anger has been allowed to take root and it is now ruling that home.

We also must address your daughter's drinking. Even if it is not every day, drunkenness is a refuge that will only deepen depression and overwhelm and keep her from the clear mind God wants her to have to raise her children and seek Him. Ephesians 5:18 says Don’t be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit. 1 Peter 5:7-8 reminds us to cast all our worries on him, because he cares for us, and to be sober and self-controlled. Alcohol will not make things easier, it will make the darkness heavier, and we pray she will turn from it completely and seek the Lord's strength instead.

We understand your pain when you speak of God's love and they reject whatever you have to say. You are not alone in that. Jesus Himself was rejected in His own town. Mark 6:4 says A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own relatives, and in his own house. John 1:11 says He came to his own, and those who were his own didn’t receive him. Do not be discouraged when the seed seems to fall on hard ground. Isaiah 55:11 says so is my word that goes out of my mouth, it will not return to me void, but it will accomplish that which I please. Your faithful witness, your prayers and your visits every few months are not wasted. Galatians 6:9 says Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.

We encourage you to keep praying for them without ceasing, and to pray not only for things to get easier but for their hearts to be surrendered to Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7 says In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. 1 John 5:14 says This is the boldness which we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will, he listens to us. God's will is for your daughter to be sober and free, for these children to honor their mother, for anger to be put away and for all of them to be comforted and saved through faith in Christ.

We encourage you also to keep pointing them toward consistent fellowship in a Bible believing church and toward godly counsel, not just counseling that they resist, but pastors and elders who will speak the Word faithfully. For your daughter, we pray she will find a local body where she can be supported as a widow and a mother, where the children can be taught the Word and be under authority that loves them. Proverbs 22:6 says Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it. That training is so needed now. And for you, we pray you will have wisdom to love them with boundaries, to not enable the drinking or the disrespect, but to speak truth in love and to continue to model the patience and gentleness of Christ when you are with them and when you are apart.

We pray together now.

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and mediator, and we lift up this dear daughter, her son and her daughter, and this faithful grandmother who loves them so deeply. Lord, You see the years of abuse, betrayal, and pain, You see the grief that still lingers after this husband and father's death, You see the depression and anger that has settled over this home. We ask You to have mercy. Heal their broken hearts, bind up their wounds, and bring Your peace that passes understanding into that house. Lord, convict this daughter of her need to turn from alcohol and to cast all her cares on You, give her strength to be sober, to seek You daily in Your Word and prayer, and to lead her children with love and firmness. Convict this son of his rage and cursing and disrespect, soften his hard heart, teach him to put away anger and wrath and to honor his mother. Soften the daughter's heart as well, that she would show love and kindness to her mother. Draw each one to repentance and to faith in Jesus, that they would be saved and filled with Your Spirit. Comfort this grandmother, strengthen her, let her not grow weary in well doing, and let her see fruit from the seeds she has sown. Give her wisdom for every visit, every phone call, every prayer, and provide for this family spiritually, emotionally and physically. We ask that You would bring godly helpers and a faithful church around them and break the chains of depression and anger in that home. We trust Your promise in Romans 8:28 that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. We ask all this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our only hope. Amen.

We have been holding your family in prayer as we read your note. Your love for your daughter and your grandchildren comes through so clearly, and we understand why your heart breaks watching them carry so much while you live hours away.

A sudden and difficult loss like this affects everyone in the house differently, and at different paces. When the years before the loss were already painful and unsettled, grief often does not look like quiet sadness. It can come out as anger, quick tempers, pulling away, or just feeling overwhelmed and shut down. Children especially may not have words for their grief and show it through outbursts or distance. When everyone is hurting at once, it is hard for anyone in the family to comfort anyone else. Your steady presence, even every few months, matters more than it may feel in the moment.

When you are able to visit, we have found it helps to keep the focus on listening more than fixing. Gentle, open questions like what has felt heaviest lately or what kind of help would feel most supportive right now can give them room to share without feeling pressured. If your daughter is open to it, you might gently encourage her to talk with a trusted pastor, counselor, or her doctor about the exhaustion and the drinking you are concerned about, so she has more local support between your visits. We encourage that alongside prayer, not instead of it.

Please also make sure you have someone to share this burden with, so you are not carrying it alone.

Father, we lift this daughter, her son and daughter, and this faithful grandmother to You in Jesus name. You see their loss, their anger, and how weary they feel. Give this mom wisdom and strength for each day, soften what has grown hard in these children, and show this grandmother how to love them well both near and far. Draw each of them closer to Your care. Amen.

Your burden for your daughter and her children is heard, and it is a heavy and holy burden to carry before the Lord. To love those who reject your words about Christ, to watch those you love live in anger and sorrow and feel unable to help, is a grief that only God can fully weigh. You are not alone in this, for our Lord Himself was rejected in His own village, and He knows the sting of love refused.

There is hope for this wounded family, not in time alone or in counseling alone, but in the healing that comes only through Jesus Christ. Scripture says He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. In one of the texts set before us it is written that the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations, and that even the least thing about Christ is healing. His fruit is sweet and nourishing, but even His leaves, His gentle touches, His smallest mercies, have power to change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. That healing is abundant and it is for such cases as this, where depression and anger and old wounds have taken deep root.

Healing and pardon go together in the gospel. When Jesus healed the man taken with palsy He first said, Thy sins be forgiven thee. Pardon and healing were one. Your daughter and her children do not only need easier circumstances, they need the Sun of Righteousness to rise upon them with healing in His wings. Without forgiveness through faith in Christ alone, the heart remains sick unto death. With it, God begins a work that will not stop till the soul is without spot or wrinkle. Pray therefore not only that their lives would be easier, but that they would be forgiven, washed in the blood of Christ, and made new. That is the true healing they need.

We grieve with you over the years of unkindness your daughter endured, and the disrespect and rage that now fills her home. Such anger quickly flares and such drinking, even if not every day, will only deepen the wounds and keep the heart from finding rest. The Lord is gracious, but He calls us to turn from sin and to walk in sobriety and self control. Love does not excuse what harms the soul. Your daughter needs to hear, in gentleness and with tears, that Christ offers both pardon for the past and power to put away the cup and to live a new life. Her children, too, need to see that their anger and contempt toward their mother is sin before God, and that Christ can give them new hearts and right spirits. That would be blessed hearing for the whole family.

Take comfort from Peter's story. Peter fell grievously, yet the Lord turned and looked upon him, and that look severed him from the crowd and broke his heart into repentance, and afterward restored him fully. The same Lord who looked upon Peter looks upon your family now, not with thunder in His hands or anger in His eyes, but bowed over the mangled heart, ready to heal the broken frame. He can restore those who have wandered and neglected Him, and then make them to strengthen their brethren.

For you, who watch and pray from hours away, continue in faithful, patient intercession. Do not cease to speak of Gods love when the door opens, even if it is rejected. Speak it without scolding, with bands of grace, as one who has been healed yourself. Keep praying according to His loving kindness and the multitude of His tender mercies. Ask for great mercy, unmeasured mercy, undeserved mercy. Pray that God would place your daughter and grandchildren under faithful preaching where healing is linked with teaching, for faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Encourage your daughter, as you have opportunity, to seek a faithful pastor and biblical counsel for herself and for her children, and to seek help to turn from drinking to sober mindedness. Encourage steady, loving boundaries in the home, that yelling and cursing and contempt are not allowed to rule, but are answered with firm and calm love.

You cannot carry all that is on your daughters plate, but Christ can. Bring each name before Him daily. Ask Him to purge every form of rebellion and discontent and to let His healing influences drop upon that household. He who has begun a good work can make even this sad home to be an abode of moral health.

We will pray with you now.

O merciful Father, have mercy upon this daughter and her son and daughter, according to Thy loving kindness and the multitude of Thy tender mercies. Forgive their sins through the blood of Jesus Christ Thy Son, and heal their broken hearts. Lift the weight of grief and anger, break the power of strong drink and rage, and give new hearts that love Thee and love one another. Comfort this grandmother in her sorrow, sustain her in prayer, and let her see in due time the fruit of her tears and intercession. Draw this whole family to Thyself, that they may be pardoned and healed and restored to walk in Thy ways. In the name of Jesus our only hope, Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing so honestly about your daughter and her family. Your love and grief for them comes through clearly, and it is right that your heart breaks to see them carrying so much hurt, anger and confusion after years of suffering and loss.

There is no life in this world that is free from sorrow, and your family has known more than many. Your daughter endured a marriage marked by unfaithfulness and violence while carrying the weight of providing for everyone, and still she loved her husband. Now she carries the weight of widowhood, single parenthood, financial pressure, and a drinking problem that she may minimize, while her children carry their own wounds. It is not surprising that they are depressed and angry, but that anger, if left unchecked, will only bring more harm. Anger feels powerful in the moment, but it destroys clear thinking, it ruins even good words, and it keeps the heart from receiving wisdom or comfort. Your grandson's quick rage and cursing, your granddaughter's coldness toward her mother, and your daughter's overwhelmed and resentful prayers all show how anger and hurt have taken root. Scripture warns that holding onto wrath harms the one who holds it more than anyone else, and that a home filled with shouting and strife cannot become a place of healing until that storm is calmed.

That is why your role as grandmother is so important and so difficult. You have tried to speak to them about God's love and they have rejected it, as many rejected Christ himself. Do not be discouraged by that rejection and do not answer their anger with anger. What is needed is what Scripture calls longsuffering with doctrine, speaking the truth with patient love, without harshness or insult, grieving for them more than being frustrated by them. No one receives correction when it comes with a sharp tongue or a heated spirit. Gentle, steady, truthful words spoken over time, in a calm spirit, give the best opportunity for them to hear. This does not mean approving what is wrong. It means you continue to love them, pray for them, and tell them the truth in a way that shows you want their good, not to win an argument.

Please continue to pray for them, but pray for more than ease. Pray that each of them would come to know salvation through Jesus Christ alone, for without Him there is no true healing. Pray that God would bring your daughter to honest repentance and to seek help for her drinking, and that she would find a faithful church where she can be shepherded and held accountable, not just attend occasionally. Pray that your grandchildren would learn to honor their mother as God commands, that their anger would be restrained and replaced with self control, and that they would return to faithfulness in daily duties like school. Pray also for yourself, for wisdom to know when to speak and when to be silent, and for strength to keep loving them during your visits and from a distance.

When you are with them, keep your words few, calm and consistent. Show love through practical help and steadiness rather than long debates. Encourage biblical counseling from a pastor who will teach the whole counsel of God, not just offer coping techniques. Encourage your daughter to seek support for alcohol use and for parenting these hurting teenagers. Set loving boundaries and do not excuse disrespect or drunkenness, but do not withdraw your love.

I will pray for you and for this family. Father in heaven, have mercy on this mother and her two children in their grief and anger. Bring them to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ, who alone saves. Deliver this daughter from dependence on alcohol and from bitterness, and give her strength to lead her home with love and discipline. Soften the hearts of these children, take away their rage and disrespect, and teach them to honor their mother. Comfort this grandmother, give her patient endurance and gentle wisdom, and let her witness be received in Your timing. Draw this whole family out of darkness into Your light and give them peace that comes from being reconciled to You. In Jesus' name, amen.
