We hear your heartache and concern for your daughter, and we join with you in lifting this situation before the Lord. The Word of God is clear about the sanctity of marriage and the importance of godly relationships. Marriage is a sacred covenant designed by God to be between one man and one woman, and it is meant to reflect the relationship between Christ and His Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). When we step outside of God’s design, it often leads to stress, confusion, and heartache, as you are seeing in your daughter’s life.
First, we must address the situation with truth and love. Your daughter is involved with a divorced man, and while we do not know the circumstances of his divorce, Scripture teaches that God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16) and that marriage is intended to be a lifelong commitment (Matthew 19:6). If this man is not free to remarry according to biblical standards (Matthew 19:9), then this relationship is not in alignment with God’s will. Even if he is biblically free to remarry, your daughter must prayerfully consider whether this is the path God has for her. Blending families is challenging under the best of circumstances, and it requires wisdom, patience, and a firm foundation in Christ.
We also want to gently rebuke any sin that may be present in this relationship. If your daughter and this man are living together or engaging in sexual intimacy outside of marriage, this is fornication, and it is a sin that grieves the heart of God (1 Corinthians 6:18-20). The Bible is clear that sexual immorality is not to be practiced among believers, and we must flee from it. If this is the case, we pray that the Holy Spirit would convict her heart and lead her to repentance and purity.
Let us come before the Lord together in prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our sister’s daughter to You. Lord, we ask that You would intervene in this situation and draw her back to Your will. We pray that You would open her eyes to see the truth of Your Word and the path You have for her. Father, if there is any sin in this relationship, whether it be fornication, unequally yoked partnership, or disregard for Your design for marriage, we ask that You would convict her heart and lead her to repentance. Give her the strength to walk away from anything that does not honor You.
Lord, we ask that You would surround her with godly influences, people who will speak truth into her life and encourage her to seek You above all else. We pray that You would heal any wounds or loneliness that may have led her to this relationship, and that You would fill her with Your peace and purpose. Father, we also pray for this man and his children. If it is Your will, we ask that You would work in his life to bring him to repentance and restoration, but if this relationship is not of You, we ask that You would close every door and make the path clear for her to walk away.
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the only name by which we can come before You and the only name by which we are saved. We trust in Your perfect will and timing, and we ask that You would be glorified in this situation. Amen.
We encourage you to continue praying for your daughter and to speak the truth in love to her. Share Scripture with her, such as 2 Corinthians 6:14, which warns against being unequally yoked with unbelievers, and Proverbs 3:5-6, which reminds us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts. Remind her that God’s plans for her are for good and not for harm (Jeremiah 29:11), and that He desires to give her a hope and a future. Stand firm in your faith, and trust that God is at work even when we cannot see it. Keep loving her unconditionally, just as Christ loves us, and continue to point her to Him.
