Coworkers

Disciple of Prayer
Good morning the office got better after the prayer request a week later we back where we started from it’s so unbelievable and immature please pray for ### to soften her heart she’s the problem.. Praying in Jesus name

We thank you for sharing this update with us and for continuing to bring this workplace situation before the Lord. We rejoice with you that you saw improvement after prayer, and we understand your discouragement that things have slipped back into old patterns of immaturity and strife. God did hear your prayer and He is still at work, even when progress feels like one step forward and one step back. We are called to pray without ceasing, as we are reminded in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 and Luke 18:1 that we should always pray and not give up.

We hear your frustration and your desire for your coworker to have a softened heart, and we join you in praying for her. At the same time we want to gently encourage you to guard your own heart against bitterness or singling her out as the sole problem. Scripture reminds us in Matthew 7:3-5 to first examine the log in our own eye, and in Philippians 2:3-4 to do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility to count others better than ourselves, each looking not only to his own interests but also to the interests of others. Where there is jealousy and selfish ambition, there is confusion and every evil deed as James 3:16 tells us, so we must pray for unity for the whole office, not only for one person to change.

We are called to be peacemakers and to pursue what makes for peace. Romans 12:18 says If it is possible, as much as it is up to you, be at peace with all men. Ephesians 4:29 says Let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear. And Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. Even when others act immaturely, we are to respond with maturity in Christ, putting on a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance as Colossians 3:12 describes, and above all putting on love which is the bond of perfection in Colossians 3:14.

We also rejoice that you prayed in Jesus name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Your faith in calling on His name is well placed.

We pray together for you, for your coworker, and for your entire office.

Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus and thank You that You hear our prayers. We thank You for the improvement You brought to this workplace and we ask You to continue Your good work there. We ask You to soften hearts, not only the heart of this coworker but all hearts in that office including our own, and to give a new heart and a new spirit as You promised in Ezekiel 36:26. Remove any heart of stone and give a heart of flesh that is tender toward You and toward others. Help us to love our enemies and pray for those who mistreat us as You commanded in Matthew 5:44. Let bitterness, wrath, anger, and malice be put away as Ephesians 4:31-32 teaches, and help everyone to be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other just as You in Christ forgave us. Give wisdom to respond with gentle answers, to speak only what builds up, and to pursue peace and maturity. Let Your peace rule in that office and let all that is done there be done in a way that honors You. We ask for endurance to keep praying and not grow weary, trusting that You are working even when we cannot see it. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

We hear the weariness in your note. To have a better week after praying and then feel like you are right back at the start is so discouraging, especially when it feels immature and out of your control. We are grateful you came back to ask for prayer again.

Workplace tension often moves in cycles rather than a straight line forward, so a good week does not mean the underlying strain is gone. One thing that has helped others in ongoing office conflict is to shift from trying to fix the other person to managing the interaction itself. When things get tense, it can help to pause and name the shared goal you all still need to accomplish together, and if possible ask a neutral third party like a supervisor to help facilitate a brief, respectful conversation about how you can work together more smoothly going forward. We will be praying for that kind of wisdom and steadiness for you as well.

Jesus, we lift this office to You. We ask You to soften hearts, including ###'s and each person there, and to bring more peace and maturity to the way you all speak and work together. Give our friend patience, clarity and protection from discouragement, and guide any conversations toward what is fair and constructive. We trust this situation to Your care. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your return to prayer after seeing a brief improvement and then a relapse is not in vain. Hardness of heart is a great and grievous evil and it is found not only in the world outside but often very near to us. The Lord knows how painful it is to labor where strife and immaturity return again and again and where sorrow hangs over the spirit.

Yet there is hope in the covenant of grace where the Lord says, I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh and I will give you a heart of flesh. It is God's to give a tender heart, not yours to create it within another nor even within yourself. No man can put a new heart into himself, for the heart being the motive power of all life must itself be renewed by grace. Only He can write His law upon the heart. The heart must be cleansed and softened by Him, for naturally it is hard and in some it has become harder than adamant stone. When the Holy Spirit puts the Cross into the heart, the heart is dissolved in tenderness. That sight of Jesus dying in woe so great is what breaks the stone within.

Continue to pray for your coworker that the Lord would do this gracious work in her. Ask Him to give her a new heart and a new spirit and to make her tender to His presence and to those around her. At the same time ask Him to keep your own heart soft and united to fear His name, lest weariness or resentment make it hard. The fact that you mourn this hardness is itself a sign that the Lord is at work in you, for a heart that were wholly stone would not mourn its own coldness.

Practice that communion with Jesus which tells Him all that is in your heart. Tell Him your disappointment, your weariness and your desire for peace in the office. Ask Him to make you an instrument of peace there, to speak with grace and to act with patience even when others act otherwise. Trust not in your own power to change another but in the honored Healer who alone can heal heart wounds and cure heart disease.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God you see this office and all who labor there. You know the strife that has returned and the sorrow it brings. We ask in the name of Jesus that you would take away the stony heart and give a heart of flesh to her of whom we pray and to each of us. Soften what is hard, cleanse what is unclean and write your law upon our hearts. Grant patience, maturity and kindness to all and let peace rule where there has been unrest. Keep us tender through the sight of Jesus and make us gentle as He is gentle. Hear us for Jesus sake. Amen.
