Good and Faithful Servant
I am currently in a courtship with someone who has a number of medical conditions that require him to sleep and rest a lot. We are long distance and live a few hours away from each other right now. I already really don't like long distance relationships but we met through work and I fell in love with him. I don't like long distance relationships because I like to be in the physical presence of someone when I am dating them. Sometimes I don't hear from him for hours and hours. Sometimes I don't hear from him until the next day. I understand his medical needs (and I also have medical conditions that require me to sleep a lot) but of course I often wonder if he is just ignoring me or not wanting to talk to me while prioritizing others (and I have some good reasons to worry about this). Please pray for me about this. I really care about him but this can be very hard. Thank you.

We hear your heart, dear sister, and we lift this situation before the Lord with tenderness and truth. First, we want to affirm that your desire for closeness and consistent communication in courtship is not wrong, God designed us for fellowship, and it is natural to long for the presence of the one you are growing to love. The challenges of long-distance courtship, compounded by health struggles, can indeed weigh heavily on your heart, especially when doubts creep in about his care and attention.

We must gently address the foundation of this courtship. Have you both openly discussed your intentions and the future? Courtship, as Scripture teaches, should be pursued with the clear goal of marriage (1 Corinthians 7:2, 9), and both of you must be equally committed to honoring God in this season. If his health or other priorities are causing him to be inconsistent in a way that leaves you feeling uncertain or undervalued, this is something that needs to be prayerfully and honestly addressed. Proverbs 24:26 reminds us, "Whoever gives an honest answer kisses the lips," and open, loving communication is essential in any godly relationship.

We also want to encourage you to examine your own heart. Are you seeking your worth and security in his responses, or are you resting in the Lord’s love for you? Psalm 139:1-3 assures us, "Yahweh, you have searched me, and you know me. You know my sitting down and my rising up. You perceive my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down, and are acquainted with all my ways." Even when human relationships falter or feel distant, God is near, and His love is steadfast.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our sister, lifting up her heart and this courtship to You. Lord, You see the longing in her soul for closeness and consistency, and You understand the weight of her concerns. We ask that You would grant her peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7), guarding her heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Father, we pray for clarity and wisdom for both of them, help them to communicate openly and honestly, with kindness and truth. If this relationship is Your will, Lord, we ask that You would strengthen it, drawing them closer to You and to one another. If it is not, we pray for the courage and grace to release it into Your hands.

Father, we also ask that You would minister to her heart in moments of doubt or loneliness. Remind her that she is deeply loved by You, and that Your plans for her are good (Jeremiah 29:11). Help her to trust in Your timing and to find her security in You alone. We pray for healing and strength for both of them as they navigate their health challenges, and we ask that You would give them the grace to support one another in love.

Lord, we rebuke any spirit of fear, insecurity, or misunderstanding that may be trying to take root in this situation. We declare that Your perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18), and we ask that You would fill their hearts with Your peace. May this courtship be a reflection of Your love, built on a foundation of faith, trust, and mutual respect. We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who holds all things together and who is the source of our hope. Amen.

Sister, we encourage you to bring these concerns before the Lord daily, surrendering your fears and frustrations to Him. Seek godly counsel from mature believers who can offer wisdom and perspective. Remember, the goal of courtship is not just to find a spouse, but to grow in Christlikeness and to discern if this is the person God has called you to walk alongside for a lifetime. Trust that God is working even in the waiting, and that He will guide your steps as you seek Him first (Matthew 6:33).

If this man is the one God has for you, He will make a way for you both to move forward in a manner that honors Him and strengthens your bond. Until then, guard your heart, remain in prayer, and lean on the Lord for the grace to walk this season with faith and patience. You are not alone, God is with you, and so are we.

Long-distance relationships are already a stretch, and when medical needs add hours of quiet, the silence can leave a lot of room for worry. It makes sense that not knowing whether he’s resting or pulling back would wear on you, especially when you’d rather just be in the same room.

It’s easy for our minds to fill in that empty space with insecurity, especially when there have been reasons to wonder. That’s not unusual, and you don’t have to be ashamed of it. What might help this stretch is a gentle, honest conversation, not one that accuses, but one that shares your heart. You could tell him that the long gaps, even when you understand his health needs, sometimes leave you feeling alone, and ask whether you two can settle on a small check-in rhythm that works for both your bodies. Sometimes what feels like distance is just different sleep schedules and fatigue, but speaking up can clear the air and build a little more trust.

We’re praying with you as you navigate this, and we’re glad you reached out.

Jesus, please steady her heart in all the waiting. When the silence stretches, be her peace. Give her wisdom for when to speak and when to rest, and help them both build trust that doesn’t depend on constant contact but on Your steady love. In Your name, amen.

If you say, "Lord, I cannot trust You unless I feel this or that," then you, in effect, say, "I can trust my own feelings, but I cannot trust God's appointed Savior." What is this but to make a god out of your feelings and a savior out of your inward griefs? Have you not found out yet that the very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty, unfits you to meet that difficulty? The silence that falls between you and the one you love is indeed a trial, but to trust yourself to your own fears and suspicions is the result of a gross falsehood and it also imputes falsehood to the God of Truth, for you do, as it were, deny that God can be believed and you assert that you can be trusted, whereas the Lord declares that no man is the proper object of trust.

This sharp medicine of waiting, of not hearing for hours, of wondering and aching, is a mercy sent to prevent your trust in yourself, in your own perceptions, in your own requirements for comfort. The Lord's tenderness toward outcasts is seen even here: He attends to prayers from a distance. This long distance, these weary hours of silence, are the very field in which faith is exercised. Trust your merciful God to help you. What is your sin? Trust your merciful God to forgive you. What are the trials you are expecting? Rely upon your merciful God to bear you through. But you are not to have this before you trust Him, you are to trust Him for this very thing. When a man with a disease goes to an eminent physician, does he say, "Doctor, I will trust you with my case when I have reached a certain stage"? Before long, if you trust Jesus, you shall know His love. Trust Him as you sink and you shall swim. Trust Him as you feel yourself dying and you shall live.

As for the hours when you are unwell and must keep to your bed, fret not, but be in the fear of the Lord all the day long. Ought we not to be in His fear all the day long, since He sees us all the day long? Does the Keeper of Israel ever slumber? Your beloved's need for sleep and rest, your own similar weakness, these are not outside the Lord's ordering. It is blessed to feel, "I will be content to take any place, so long as I can love others and do them good by loving them." Set all your confidence upon the Almighty. Trust in the living God. He is a thinking God, an active God, a working, personal God who comes into the midst of this world and does not leave it to go on by itself. He sees your heart, He knows your fears of being forgotten or ignored, and He is able to sustain you and, in His time, to make all things plain.

To obey Christ is, in its very essence, to trust Him or believe in Him. If you would be saved from this gnawing unrest, your first act of obedience must be to trust Jesus wholly, simply, heartily and alone with this courtship and all its cares. He has promised to save all that trust Him. Go and try Him. The Author of eternal salvation is able to save you now from the tyranny of anxious thoughts. Only trust Him. Trust your soul with Jesus. Trust Him with one soul? That is nothing! I know that He is able to save all who trust Him. Yes, in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities pass.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You speak of a courtship where distance and infirmity try your patience, and you fear being neglected. But consider what love truly is. Love suffers long and is kind; it does not envy or vaunt itself. If you would build a life with this man, you must learn to bear with long-suffering now, for that is the foundation of all self-denial. A long-suffering soul is like a deep sea: whatever unexpected trouble falls upon it is quenched and vanishes, but the soul remains undisturbed. Why then do you let the sparks of suspicion and anxiety kindle a fire within you? You say you wonder if he is ignoring you, yet you yourself know the weight of bodily weakness. Is it not more fitting to believe the best, to trust that his silence comes from necessity rather than neglect?

Do not be like Peter, who, under pressure of anxiety, forgot all the Lord’s tender care and stumbled into denial. Our fears often blind us to the faithfulness of others and to God’s providence. When you cannot hear his voice for hours, commit that silence to God. Groan, look up to Him, and He will send His Word to bring compunction and freedom from this slavery of worry. The evil of suspicion divides households and turns friends into enemies, as the prophet warned. Do not let your heart become a battleground where trust is slain by every delay. True love does not depend on constant nearness; it stretches across distances and remains present, as the Apostle greeted others with a kiss through messengers. If your affection is grounded in Christ, then physical absence cannot destroy it.

But examine yourself also. Is your longing for his presence rooted in love, or in a desire to possess and control? The Apostle prayed that the communication of faith might become effectual through works. So let your patience be the work that makes your faith active. Bear his infirmities as you hope he will bear yours, and do not measure love by the speed of his replies. If you truly care for him, then care for him without demanding that he satisfy your every anxiety. Cast this burden upon the Lord, who raises up those who are cast down. I will pray that you both grow in that long-suffering which is mightier than any army, and that your courtship, if it be pleasing to God, may lead you not into greater suspicion, but into the peace that surpasses understanding.

I hear the ache in what you describe, and I join you in bringing this before the Lord. The hours of silence after you reach out leave room for all those thoughts to rush in. You understand the medical reasons in your mind, yet your heart still wonders. That is the very place where God invites you into something deeper than just trying to figure it out.

There is a rest God has for His children, a place where your spirit quiets down even when the circumstances haven’t changed. It is a rest you enter by faith, not by finally getting the clarity you long for. You can keep scanning your phone, keep replaying the reasons you have to worry, and that will only stir up more turmoil. But when you trust the Lord with this relationship, you lay it all down into His hands. The promise is that He will bring to pass what is right. You do not need to carry the weight of making it work.

I know you want to be in the same room. I know the distance feels like an enemy to the nearness you need. But even physical presence cannot quiet the fears that rise from a heart that has not learned to rest in God. The silence can become a strange mercy if it drives you to say, “Lord, I do not understand what You are doing. I cannot control this. But I am going to trust You anyway.” That is real faith, the kind that sees His hand when His ways are hidden.

You mentioned you have some solid reasons to worry. Do not harden your heart against the rest He offers by clinging to those reasons as though they are the whole story. God knows every detail. He sees the medical struggles on both sides, and He knows exactly what is going on in those quiet hours. His rest does not come from proving to yourself that everything is safe. It comes from believing that He is at work, even when you cannot trace Him.

So when the waiting stretches long and your mind starts to spin, stop and commit the whole thing to Him again. Cease from your own frantic efforts to secure reassurance. Trust in the Lord, and do good right where you are. Let His peace rule instead of the anxiety. He has never failed to keep watch over His children, and He will not fail you now. I am praying that you will taste that calm certainty that comes only from leaning fully on Him.
