Confession

Servant of All
I keep looking at woman lustfully. I don't commit the goon sin, but now and again I will look at a woman lustfully on the television. I know how much it hurts them and Jesus, and I want to stop.

We thank you for your honest confession and we join with you before the Lord in this struggle, for we know God sees your heart and your desire to turn from this sin and walk in purity. We praise God that you have not hardened your heart but have brought this into the light, because Scripture tells us If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness 1 John 1:9.

We want to speak truth to you in love. Even when there is no physical act, Jesus made clear that lustful looking itself is sin before God. He said that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart Matthew 5:28. We must lovingly rebuke this, not to condemn you, but because God calls us to holiness and because this sin hurts your fellowship with Christ, dishonors women made in the image of God, and defiles the good gift of sexual desire which God designed to be expressed only within the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. To continue to entertain it, even on television, is to let sin reign in your mortal body Romans 6:12.

We understand the battle for the eyes and the mind is real, and we commend you for wanting to stop and for recognizing how much it grieves the Lord. Job made a covenant with his eyes, saying I made a covenant with my eyes, how then should I look lustfully at a young woman Job 31:1, and we are called to follow that example. God has not left us without help or without a way out, for No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it 1 Corinthians 10:13.

We pray together for you now.

Father, we come before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ, and we lift up our brother who has confessed this sin. We thank You for his honesty and his hunger for holiness. We ask You to forgive him and cleanse him completely by the blood of Jesus. Wash his heart and renew his mind. Give him strength by Your Holy Spirit to flee youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace 2 Timothy 2:22. Help him to bring every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ 2 Corinthians 10:5 and to set his mind on whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely Philippians 4:8. Teach him to guard his eyes and to turn quickly from temptation, to make no provision for the flesh Romans 13:14, and to hide Your word in his heart that he might not sin against You Psalm 119:11. Restore to him the joy of walking in purity and the confidence that he is a new creation in Christ. We ask this in Jesus name, Amen.

We encourage you to walk this out daily with practical steps in dependence on the Holy Spirit. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind Romans 12:2 through consistent time in the Word, prayer, and memorization of Scripture so that when temptation comes you have the sword of the Spirit ready. Guard what you allow before your eyes, for we are told to turn away our eyes from looking at worthless things Psalm 119:37. If certain television programs, channels, or times of day cause you to stumble, remove them or turn them off entirely, and do not hesitate to put filters or boundaries in place. Bring this struggle into the light with a mature Christian brother or pastor who can hold you accountable and pray with you regularly, for confession and fellowship bring healing James 5:16. And remember that purity is not merely trying harder not to look, but pursuing Christ more, fixing your affections on Him so that lesser desires lose their power. God is able to keep you and He delights in your repentance. Keep confessing quickly, keep fleeing, and keep seeking Him, and He will strengthen you to walk in freedom.

We are grateful you were honest enough to put this into words. It takes humility to name this struggle plainly, and we hear how much you want to walk differently out of love for Jesus and out of respect for others.

Wanting to stop is a good and right desire. Lust can feel like simple attraction at first, but it quickly moves beyond noticing beauty into wanting what was not meant for you and letting that desire matter more than what God wants for you. Recognizing that difference is part of turning away from it.

Trying to fight this alone rarely works for long. Isolation makes temptation stronger, while having another person close enough to ask honest questions makes a real difference. If you do not already have that, prayerfully consider inviting one trusted, mature Christian man to be that steady check in for you, someone who pursues purity himself and will give you kind, direct feedback week by week.

It also helps to decide ahead of time, when you are clear headed, what you will do with the television. Choose in advance what you will watch and what you will turn off, and have a simple plan for the moment temptation comes, to look away, switch it off, or leave the room. Clearing away what trips you up before you are in the moment protects your heart and honors the dignity of others.

Father, we thank You for this brother and his honesty before You. Give him strength to walk in purity, wisdom to set wise boundaries, and the encouragement of faithful friendship as he seeks You. Help him know Your forgiveness and Your power to change his heart day by day. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest confession before the Lord is itself a mercy, and I thank you for speaking plainly about that which many hide. To feel the sting of sin, to know that it grieves the heart of Christ and wounds others, and to desire to be free from it, is a work of grace and not to be despised.

You say you have not gone further into outward acts, yet you look lustfully and know it to be sin. Our Lord has taught us that the eye and the heart are not innocent when lust is entertained, for lust when it has conceived brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished brings forth death. That is the pedigree of sin. It is born of lust and it brings forth death. Any sin, whatever it is, if we cling to it and love it, will bring forth death. Rest assured of that. Therefore you are wise to make war upon it now, while it is yet in the glance, before it hardens into habit.

Scripture calls us to keep ourselves unspotted from the world, and charity and purity are as the two great garments of Christianity. Purity is not left optional. The text insists upon careful self watching. Do you understand that it is your very person, your soul, your heart, your very self that is to be kept unspotted. What a man is, before long, he does. Keep then a watch at the gate of the eyes. Job made a covenant with his eyes, and you must do the same. If television becomes a snare to you, then the snare must be avoided or cast out. The man who prays Lead us not into temptation and then goes into it is a liar before God. We must not for any reason desire to be tried, but must pray Lead us not into temptation with a humble self distrust which shrinks from the conflict. There is courage there, for the suppliant calmly looks the temptation in the face and dreads only the evil which it may work in him.

Do not trust in your own resolutions. Without Christ you can do nothing. Not some great things only, but nothing. Every grain of self strength we gain is a grain of weakness, and every particle of self reliance is but a new particle of poison. Have you overcome temptation in the past. Hang not up your banner nor decorate your own bosom with the glory, for who made you strong in the battle. It is a great mercy when we tremble and feel our weakness, for then we look to the Lord Jesus Christ for all things. He is not a memory of one who lived long ago and died, but He is alive, our familiar Friend, able to keep you.

Therefore I exhort you to self examination and self humbling before God. Set apart seasons to search your heart, confess this sin without excuse, and look to Christ alone for salvation and for power to forsake it. If you have any rag of self righteousness, off with it, and come as a naked spirit to the sea of His love. A naked spirit was never drowned there. Plead His blood which cleanses from all sin, and plead His Spirit to make you holy.

In practice, turn from the occasion of sin. Do not linger before that which inflames lust. Put the remote down, leave the room, quench the screen, and give your eyes other work. Fill the mind with Scripture, with prayer, with useful labor and with the visitation of those in need, for charity and purity go together. Seek a faithful brother to whom you may be accountable, and walk in the light. And pray daily, Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, trusting not in your watchfulness but in His keeping.

May the Lord who has begun this good work in you, in making you hate the sin you once excused, now perfect it by making you watchful, humble, and dependent upon Christ, who is able to keep you from falling and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory. Look to Him, trust Him, and by His grace turn utterly from this lust of the eyes to that purity which He loves.
