"Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.'” Therefore I willboast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong," 2 Cor 12:8-10. "The one who tames the tongue controls the whole body," James 3:2, but "No person can tame the tongue," Jam 3:8, "But Jesus said, 'What is impossible with man is possible with God,'" Luke 18:27. "While Confessing My Sins and The Sins of My Nation," Daniel 9:20, "If My people who are called by My name humble themselves and pray and seek My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land," 2 Chronicles 7:14... Father, thank You for giving mercy and grace in times of need, Heb 4:16, past and now in present. Though we may yet need grace to confess in the future, we rather prefer to be done with all future sin, and were there a button to push representing that ability to delete all future stumbling prior to their occurring, we'd gladly press it without delay or hesitation (since we all stumble often, specifically with the tongue, James 3:2). Yet since no such button exists, and the best of humanity and even Christians are at best still "human," we are content with what remedy we have, namely the prescription to humbly confess and forsake our sins, and promises of not only that we'll find mercy, Prov 28:13, but cleansing from all unrighteousness, 1 Jn 1:9, and even contentment in Your presence, Heb 13:5, and promises of holiness, which we inherit by faith, Heb 4:2, even promises to do no wrong, 2 Cor 13:7, not stumble in what we say and control the whole body, James 3:2, even to walk as Jesus Himself, 1 Jn 2:6, 1 Jn 4:17. We continue the remedy of our misuse of the instrument of the tongue we were given to glorify God and edify others, in confession and repentance, for sanctification both a one-time act and an ongoing work of participation with the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, Matt 3:8, Phil 2:12-13, 1 Tim 4:16, so we agree with Your admonition to confess our sins to one another and pray for each other that we may be healed, James 5:16 -- maybe that's how through boasting in our weaknesses 2 Cor 12:9 by faith from weaknesses we are made strong, Heb 11:32-34. So in obedience to Your teaching through Hosea, we, "Take words with you, and turn to the LORD: say unto him, 'Take away all iniquity, and receive us graciously: so will we render the calves of our lips as bulls" Hos 14:2.

Lord, I've missed Your warnings, not hearkened to Your Voice, Missed Your Spirit's leading, haven't taken the way of escape in every occurrence, 1 Cor 10:13... I've dealt with things unrighteously, sinned and fallen short of Your glorious image, Rom 3:23, Gen 1:27, Matt 5:48, Eph 5:1. I've lacked love, have gotten "in the flesh," have said and typed things in with a mixture of emotions, even in anger, that even if they were true have either lacked love or forgotten the foundation of equality for the sake of Christ, Eph 5:21, maybe both or all of the following: I have done things mixed with pride and empty conceit, and in times of pain have said, spoken, typed, forwarded and done things to further my own interests or unrighteous emotions, rather than considering the interests of others, and lacked the attitude of Christ's humility that prefers my neighbor's advantage, and forgotten to treat others as more important than myself, Phil 2:3-5. Such actions and attitudes that display such mixture tainted with the anger of man do not achieve the righteousness of God, James 1:19-20. Therefore, not using my bodily members as instruments of righteousness consistently, I confess with Isaiah, I've been a man of unclean lips, Isa 6:5, and confess like Peter, I am an unclean man, Luke 5:8.

Since our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them, transgressing and denying Yahweh, and turning away from following our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood, Isa 59:12-13, at time, "Surely I have spoken of things I did not understand, things too wonderful for me to know, therefore I despise my sins, and I repent from them in dust and ashes," Job 42:3, Job 42:6. Yet though You've disciplined me severely, You haven't given me over to death, Ps 118:18. I can say with the Psalmist, "It was good for me to be afflicted that I might learn the way of Your Commands," Ps 119:71. Let me make the most of Your discipline, knowing it's end result has many ends in mind, sanctification being a chief one, Even Jesus being the author, ἀρχηγὸν, ultimate architect, pioneer and engineer of our salvation, perfected through suffering, Heb 2:10, on earth and in flesh, the proving ground of obedience, becoming the ultimate fountain of salvation, Heb 5:8-9. Surely, there is One found Worthy, Rev 5:9.

Though beyond human capacity to bear at times tribulation transfers every drop of hope to You alone who raise the dead, 2 Cor 1:8-9, who has helped us and will yet again, others assisting us in prayers, 2 Cor 1:10-11, produces patience leading to maturity that we may also be complete, James 1:2-3, and though not pleasant at present, afterward yields not only perseverance, proven character but an abiding hope that does not disappoint, even granting assurance through The Holy Spirit of Adoption, Rom 5:3-5. May trials yield a harvest of peaceful fruit and righteousness, Heb 12:11, even an everlasting quietness and confidence, Isa 32:17, an everlasting crown of life, James 1:12, and ability to reign with You, as You overcame and reign in truth, humility and justice, Ps 45:4, Rev 3:19-21, Rev 21:7. We ask for grace to renew our minds, Rom 12:2, to rejoice in all these things knowing we are presently blessed and understanding their end is eternal reward, Matt 5:10-12, and that Your Intention is to work it all together for good, Rom 8:28, because You are indeed Gracious and Compassionate, Ex 34:4-5, as we see You were with Job, James 1:12. Let us pray for others and others pray for us knowing You have brought us through trials before, You will do so again, and that prayers are powerful and effective, 2 Cor 1:10-11, especially when we confess our struggles and sins to one another and pray for each other, Your promise is the prayers are powerful and effective, James 5:15-16, even as Elijah's, James 5:17-18... We join you in this deep confession and meditation on the Word, and we thank you for humbling yourself before the Lord and before us as your brothers and sisters, for there is great wisdom in what you have brought together from Scripture.

You have rightly connected the promise that His power is perfected in weakness with the call to confess sin and to tame the tongue. We hear your heart that you desire not just forgiveness for past stumbling but to be kept from future sin, and that you recognize with James that we all stumble in many ways and if anyone does not stumble in word, the same is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body also, James 3:2, and that no man can tame the tongue, James 3:8. Your question is answered in the very verses you cited, for what is impossible with men is possible with God, Luke 18:27, and by faith they were made strong out of weakness, Heb 11:34. This is the mystery of 2 Cor 12:9 where the Lord said, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore most gladly we will rather glory in our weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on us. When we boast in our weakness we are not boasting in sin itself, but in our need for Christ, and that is why Paul could say for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in distresses, for when I am weak, then am I strong, 2 Cor 12:10.

We also affirm with you the pathway of confession and repentance that you have traced. You quoted if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, will forgive their sin, and will heal their land, 2 Chron 7:14, and while I was speaking, and praying, and confessing my sin and the sin of my people Israel, and presenting my supplication before Yahweh my God, Dan 9:20. This humbling and turning is not a work of the flesh but a work of grace, and we are told confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed, the insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective, James 5:16, and if we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 1 John 1:9, and he who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy, Prov 28:13. We see that you have taken words with you and returned to the Lord as Hosea taught, take words with you, and return to Yahweh, say to him, Take away all iniquity, and accept that which is good, so we will offer our lips like bulls, Hos 14:2.

You have also rightly identified the root in the tongue and in anger. We are exhorted to be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger, for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God, James 1:19-20. The Lord Himself is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in loving kindness and truth, Exod 34:6, and we are called to walk as He walked, 1 John 2:6. Your confession that at times you have spoken from unrighteous emotions, from pride and empty conceit, and have not considered others more important than yourself, Phil 2:3-4, is honest and pleasing to God, for He gives grace to the humble. We do not rebuke your honesty but we agree with you that such mixture does not achieve the righteousness of God, and we rejoice that you have owned it as Isaiah did saying I am a man of unclean lips, Isa 6:5, and as Peter did saying depart from me, for I am a sinful man, Lord, Luke 5:8.

We pray together now for you and with you.

Father, we come before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, the one mediator between God and men, 1 Tim 2:5, and the only name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12, and we thank You that we may approach with boldness to receive mercy and find grace for help in time of need, Heb 4:16. We thank You that Your grace is sufficient for us and that Your power is made perfect in our weakness. We confess with our brother our sins of the tongue, our hasty words, our anger, our pride, our failure to take every way of escape You provided, 1 Cor 10:13, and our falling short of Your glory, Rom 3:23. Forgive us and cleanse us from all unrighteousness according to Your promise. Heal our land as we humble ourselves, pray, seek Your face and turn from our wicked ways. We ask You to tame what we cannot tame, to set a guard over our mouths and keep watch over the doors of our lips, Ps 141:3, and to let our speech be gracious, seasoned with comfort as You answered the angel with gracious words, comforting words, Zech 1:13, and as Jesus spoke only what the Father gave Him to say, John 12:49. Renew our minds, Rom 12:2, that we may be slow to become angry and quick to listen, and make us doers of the word and not hearers only, James 1:22. Train us through Your discipline, though for the present it seems not to be joy but grief, yet afterward yield the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it, Heb 12:11, and bring forth in us a harvest of righteousness and peace, and an everlasting quietness and confidence, Isa 32:17. Make us strong out of weakness by faith, and let the power of Christ rest upon us, that we may walk just as He walked and love from a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith, 1 Tim 1:5. We ask this in the power of attorney You have given us in Jesus name, that whatever we ask in His name You will do, John 14:13-14, and we abide in Him and His words abide in us, John 15:7. Amen.

We encourage you to continue in this daily practice of confession and forsaking, of taking words with you to the Lord, and of confessing to one another for healing. Do not grow weary in discipline, for the Lord disciplines those He loves, and He who began a good work will perfect it. Your desire to be done with future sin is itself evidence of the Holy Spirit sanctifying you both as a one time act and as an ongoing work as you work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you both to will and to work, for his good pleasure, Phil 2:12-13. Keep boasting in the Lord and not in the flesh, delighting even in insults and hardships for Christ's sake, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance, character and hope that does not disappoint, Rom 5:3-5, and that afterward it yields blessing to those who endure, Matt 5:10-12, for You will work all things together for good for those who love You, Rom 8:28.

We were so struck by the honesty in what you shared. You clearly love the Lord and want your words to honor Him, and it hurts when anger or pride slips in and your tongue does not reflect the heart you want to have. That ache to just be done with stumbling altogether is something many believers understand.

One thing that has helped us is remembering confession is not meant to be a single moment that fixes everything at once, but an ongoing way of walking with God. It brings relief from guilt and slowly makes sin less attractive as we turn in a new direction with His help. Your weakness with words is not a surprise to Him, and His grace meets you right there to change you over time, not to shame you.

If it helps, you might take one recent moment with your words that still weighs on you and bring it plainly to the Lord without excuse, noting how it affected the other person, and then share it with one trusted, mature believer who can pray for you. That kind of specific, humble confession often brings the healing and strength you are longing for.

Father, thank You for Your mercy when we come honestly to You. We ask You to cleanse our brother in his words and heart, fill him with Your love and patience, teach him to be quick to listen and slow to anger, and let the power of Christ rest on him in his weakness. It is a gracious token for good when the soul is made to feel its own weakness, to mourn the sins of the tongue, and to turn with humble confession to the Lord who heareth from heaven. Your longing to be done with sin, to have the tongue tamed and the whole body brought under grace, is itself wrought in you by the Spirit, and it shall not be despised by Him who giveth grace to the humble.

You have well quoted that word, My grace is sufficient for thee, for My power is perfected in weakness. The Lord doth not remove the thorn at our first pleading, that we may learn that His strength is made perfect not in our strength but in our acknowledged infirmity. There is a weakness which is infirmity and there is a weakness which is sinful, springing from our fallen nature. In both, faith is the means by which we are made strong out of weakness. Not by any button pressed by our own resolve, but by a holy faith laying hold upon a holy Christ, the tongue once unbridled is brought under His bridle, and the heart once proud is made low and gentle.

Humility is not to think falsely of ourselves, nor to wear a show of lowliness in the face while pride reigns within. It is to make a right estimate of ourselves before God, to serve the Lord with all humility of mind, before the service, in it, and after it is done. So you do well to confess, I am a man of unclean lips, and to take your place with Isaiah and with Peter. Such confession, if it be true, must be first and fully to God. Pour out the particulars before Him who cannot be polluted by your iniquity and who waiteth to be gracious. Before man let the confession be general, I am a sinner, for the excellence of penitence is lost when it is forced or curious. But before God keep nothing back, for if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

You ask how the tongue may be tamed when James saith no man can tame it. That is true, and therein is our hope, for what is impossible with man is possible with God. He who made the tongue can govern it. Seek then not only pardon for what the tongue hath spoken in haste, in anger, in pride and empty conceit, but power to speak henceforth with grace. Be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry, remembering that the anger of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Let the aim be that love which cometh from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

Therefore boast not in any attainment of your own, but gladly in your weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon you. When you are weak, then in Him you are strong. Take words with you and turn unto the Lord, saying, Take away all iniquity and receive us graciously. He will hear, forgive, and heal, not because we have humbled ourselves meritoriously, but because Christ hath borne our sins in His own body on the tree and is the one Mediator between God and men.

May the Lord grant you to abide in Christ and in His words, to walk as He walked, to be renewed in your mind, and to bring forth the peaceful fruit of righteousness after the discipline of the present hour. May He keep you content in His presence, give you grace to turn from every wicked way, and make your lips henceforth instruments of righteousness to His praise.

Your confession is good and right before God, and He hears those who humble themselves, pray, seek His face and turn from their wicked ways. You have taken words with you and returned to the Lord as Hosea taught, saying take away all iniquity and receive us graciously, and God has promised that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

You speak truly when you say that power is perfected in weakness. The Apostle pleaded three times and heard the answer, My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness. Therefore we can boast gladly in our weaknesses so that the power of Christ may rest upon us. This does not mean we love sin, but that we stop trusting in ourselves and transfer all hope to God who raises the dead. By faith those who were weak were made strong, not by their own resolve but by His grace working in them. Your desire to be done with future stumbling is itself a work of grace, and God will complete the sanctification He has begun, both as a once for all cleansing through Christ and as a daily work in which we labor with the Holy Spirit.

You have rightly seen the sin of the tongue. God gave us mouth and tongue not to tear down but to give thanks to Him and to build up our neighbor. When we use it to destroy that building, it would be better to be silent. The tongue is a hand that lays hold of the feet of God when it prays, and it imitates the tongue of Christ when it speaks with gentleness and meekness, blessing when reviled and praying for those who do despite to us. No man can tame the tongue by himself, but what is impossible with man is possible with God. He who brings out the precious from the vile shall be as His mouth.

Therefore put a bridle on the tongue. This needs no long journey or great expense, only a willing and earnest mind. Cast off unseasonable reproaches, anger, disorderly desires and careless oaths. Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God. Wrath is a storm in the soul in which nothing wholesome can dwell, and the Holy Spirit does not dwell where wrath remains. Whether we pray or speak or keep silence, we ruin all if we do it in anger. Instead clothe yourself with all lowliness and meekness and long suffering, being lowly not only in words but in bearing and tone of voice, toward friend and foe, great and small, and in that lowliness bear with one another in love.

Continue in the remedy God has given. Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another that you may be healed, for the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Humble yourself under His discipline, for though it is not pleasant at present but grievous, afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. Keep renewing your mind, abiding in Christ and in His words, walking as He walked, trusting that He who is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, will hear from heaven, forgive and heal.

We pray with you now that the Lord will grant you mercy and grace in time of need, that He will forgive what you have spoken in pride or anger or empty conceit, cleanse your lips as He cleansed Isaiah, grant you a pure heart, a good conscience and a sincere faith, teach you what to say and how to say it in the best way possible, and make your speech always gracious, seasoned with love, so that it builds up those who hear.
