Competence 20 Jun 2026 Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so. - Acts 17:11 Devotional: A new hair salon opened for business across the street from the well-established barber shop. They put up a big bold sign which read: "We Give $7 Haircuts!" Not to be outdone, the old master barber put up his own sign: "We Fix $7 Haircuts!" Like the hair salon, the world wants to tell us there is a better way to God than by Jesus. But we as believers need to be like the competent master barber and let the world know that we have the fix for there shortcut to God; and that fix is Jesus Prayer: Lord God, help me to speak the truth of your word to those who want to undercut it. In Jesus' name, Amen.

We are deeply encouraged by your reflection on Acts 17:11, which reminds us of the noble character of the Bereans who diligently searched the Scriptures to verify the truth. This is a powerful example for all believers, to approach God’s Word with eagerness and discernment, especially in a world that often seeks to offer counterfeit paths to Him.

Your analogy of the barber shop and the hair salon is a vivid illustration of how the world attempts to lure people away from the truth of Jesus Christ with enticing but ultimately empty promises. The world may offer "cheap" or "easy" alternatives to salvation, but these are distortions of God’s perfect plan. Jesus Himself declared, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12). This is not a matter of opinion but of divine truth, and we must stand firm in it, just as the master barber stood firm in his craft.

We also lift up your prayer, asking God to empower you to speak His truth boldly and lovingly to those who seek to undermine it. The apostle Paul exhorts us in Ephesians 6:19-20 to pray "that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak." May the Holy Spirit fill you with wisdom, courage, and grace as you engage with those who may be deceived by the world’s empty promises.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the truth of Your Word and the salvation found only in Jesus Christ. Lord, we ask that You sharpen our discernment like the Bereans, so that we may always test what we hear against the unchanging truth of Scripture. Give us boldness to stand firm in Your truth, even when the world mocks or offers counterfeit paths. Equip us to be ambassadors of Your gospel, fixing the brokenness of false teachings with the healing power of Jesus’ name. May our words and lives reflect Your love and truth, drawing others to the only Savior, Jesus Christ. We ask this in His mighty and precious name. Amen.

We encourage you to continue seeking God’s wisdom as you engage with others. Remember, the world’s shortcuts may seem appealing, but they lead only to emptiness. Jesus is the only fix for the brokenness of sin, and His grace is sufficient for all who turn to Him. Keep studying the Scriptures, praying for opportunities to share the truth, and trusting that God will use your faithfulness for His glory.

We're grateful you shared this, because there's something grounding about the picture of that old barber, steady, experienced, not panicked by a flashy competitor. He knew what he brought was deeper than a bargain. That kind of competence doesn't usually come from one dramatic moment; it grows in the quiet, daily habit of staying close to what's true. The Bereans didn't just feel their way along; they examined. And they did it together, habitually. That encourages us, because sometimes we think we need a grand breakthrough when what we actually need is the next faithful step in the ordinary rhythm of seeking God's truth.

If you're asking what that looks like practically for you right now, we'd simply say: keep doing what the Bereans did, but maybe pick one specific area where the world's shortcuts feel loudest this week. Sit with a passage that addresses it, not to master it, but to let it shape your thinking slowly, over days. You don't have to have the perfect answer for everyone around you; the barber just fixed the haircut in front of him.

Lord, we ask you to deepen this desire for genuine competence. Anchor us in your word so that we don't drift toward easy shortcuts or anxious reactions. Give us steady hearts that examine, learn, and then speak with the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you. In Jesus' name.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
