Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask prayer for a comfortable environment. This is good, for we all desire a setting free from disturbance. Yet consider what true comfort is. For there is a peace that is merely external, often mischievous and unprofitable, and no advantage to those who possess it. Robbers may agree together, but this concord is more grievous than any war. The peace which Christ left us is of another kind, a peace that renders you stronger, a peace with Him that passes to the soul even when the world is in tumult.
Therefore I entreat you to seek first that harmony of the mind and sentiment. This is the chief point of all good in any place, as it is written, "A man and his wife that agree together." For where love is, no discord will find admittance. So too in your labors, if you cultivate peace with those around you and, above all, peace with God, then even a troubled world can become a place of rest. Do not merely ask for an easy atmosphere, but work together with God in this, for we are His fellow-workers. Pray that He make you perfect in every good work, working in you that which is well-pleasing in His sight. When your own heart is at peace with Him, you will find that the environment, whatever its outward shape, holds less power to disturb you. This peace is the Mother of all good things, the foundation of joy.
