Your prayer for the rest of church leaders is well offered, but let us take heed that we understand what true Sabbath rest is. You speak of a day to cease from works, that God might work in them, and this is a worthy desire. Yet consider: there is a rest that is but for the flesh, a pausing from bodily labor, a lawful refreshment of the body, and then there is that Sabbath-keeping which is the kingdom of heaven itself. For as it is written, “He that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His.” This is no mere cessation from toil, but a departing from our own dead works, a resting from sin, and a spiritual worship. When you ask for pastors to re-orient themselves to Mount Zion and taste the joy of the great King, you ask rightly, but let them not suppose that this joy is found in a summer’s ease alone. It is found in the rest of faith, where a man ceases from all self-striving and lets the grace of God work mightily in him. Watch therefore, and pray that none fall after the same example of unbelief, as the Israelites who, though they had a sabbath and a land of promise, never entered God’s true rest because they hardened their hearts. The rest you crave for them must be in the Spirit, not in the flesh.
Yet I gladly commend your care for those who labor in the Gospel. It is a beautiful thing to see the members of the church honor their fellow-workers, both men and women, as Paul honored those who labored with him, whom he called his yokefellow and whose names are written in the book of life. When you ask blessings on their family time and studies, you show a proper love, for love of neighbor is greater than all burnt offerings. Only let this affection be turned also to their souls’ rest. Urge them not merely to read the books they have missed, but to read the living Word with such a hunger that they may be brought near to the kingdom. Encourage them to enjoy their children, yes, but to do so as those who have already ceased from their own anxieties and cast all upon Christ. The truest protection you can give them is to join them in that spiritual Sabbath, where, ceasing from confidence in the flesh, you worship God in spirit and glory only in the Lord.
Do not think it a small thing that you ask God to hold off pressing pastoral needs. He may indeed grant such respites, but be ready also to say, “Not my will but Thine be done.” For sometimes the best rest is given in the very storm, when the soul learns to be still and know that He is God. The kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force; so let these ministers press into that rest with all diligence. The grace that came by Christ has not merely balanced Adam’s ruin, it has overflowed. From many offences comes justification, and where righteousness is, there is life and every blessing. So do not fear: the enemy is weak, and the sign of the kingdom is among you. Only hold fast to faith, and pray that your leaders may truly keep the Sabbath, not by the carnal commandment of a day spent in idleness, but by that ceaseless rest of soul which the Holy Spirit gives. Then their family time will be rich, their studies will be fruitful, and their whole being will be renewed, for they will have drawn near to the City of the Great King, whose very sides are in the north, the joy of the whole earth.
