Grief for the lost is itself a proof that the Spirit is at work within you, for no one grieves over the spiritual death of another unless the Friend of man has first kindled that fire in his own heart. You bring before me a great flood of petitions, all drawn from the holy Scriptures, and I see woven through them a burning desire for your household to hear the Word and live. This is well. But learn now from what you already possess: the very hunger you feel is a gift. He who desires the salvation of others has already received an earnest of his own salvation. For what is it to love your family's souls but to love what Christ loves, and to desire what He died to purchase?
You heap together many sayings of Scripture and many requests, and you do well. Yet take care: the fervor of intercession must be matched by a firm assurance of faith. For what does the apostle say? "Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith" (Heb 10:22). Many pray, but they pray like men tossing on the sea, doubting whether God will hear. This is not faith. Faith believes concerning the promise of God as though it were already seen. When you ask the Father to draw your family by the revelation of Christ, believe that He is already doing it, for the words are not your own but the Spirit's utterance in you. The same God who said, "None can come to Me unless the Father draws him," has put that very request in your mouth. Will He not fulfill the desire which His own Spirit has birthed? Far from it.
But you must also understand the way in which God commonly draws men. He draws them by the hearing of the Word, but not by the Word alone. He draws them by example, by long-suffering, and sometimes by affliction. Here your own life becomes a living scripture. If you would have your household taste the heavenly gift, show them what that gift has produced. Let them see in you a heart full of thanksgiving, a life unshaken by the cares of this world, a peace that surpasses understanding. The harlot Rahab perished not with the disobedient, and why? Because she had received the spies with peace, a token of faith that worked by love. Your family will see your works and may be won without a word.
Do not grow weary. You have quoted, "Faith comes by hearing," and so it does. But you have also quoted the prophet Hosea, "My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge." Reflect then on the patience of God. How many years did He endure the stubbornness of Israel, sending prophets, granting signs, allowing afflictions, all to draw them back? And yet the Scripture says, "Today, if you will hear His voice, harden not your hearts." You pray for your family to attend the assembly tonight. What if they do not? Will you then despair? Remember the words, "Lest at any time they should be converted, and I should heal them." God speaks this to show that conversion is still possible, that He stands ready to heal, and that the only barrier is their own unwillingness. Therefore knock again. The first attendance may be dull, the hearing may seem unfruitful, but the seed is being planted. The Word of God is not like the words of men; it abides forever, and in due season it will spring up, perhaps when you least expect it.
I say these things not to discourage but to strengthen. The apostle writes of those who "tasted the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost, and then fell away." He says it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance by a second baptism, for they crucify the Son of God afresh. But he does not say it is impossible for them to repent! Far from it! The gate of repentance stands open until the last breath. Therefore pray boldly, yet rest in God's timing. The same God who spoke by the Spirit to the Apostles, giving them commandments after His resurrection, the same God who by the body of Elisha raised a dead man without the dead man's faith, this God can raise your household even if they seem as dry bones. Only do not bury them before they are dead.
Now I would say one thing more: Do not rely on the carnal bond. Many think, "They are my children, my flesh, my household, surely God will save them for my sake." But the Baptist cried out, "God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham." The promise is to faith, not to blood. Therefore cast away that secret imagination and rest all your hope on the mercy of God in Christ. That mercy is not limited to the worthy, for none are worthy. It reaches to the chief of sinners, and it will reach your house if you do not let go.
Persist then in prayer, but let your prayer be full of hope. "When we ask according to His will, He hears us; and if we know that He hears us, we know that we have the petitions we have asked." Ask for the revelation of Christ, ask for the Spirit to convict the world of sin, ask for open minds to understand the Scriptures, these are according to His will, and therefore they are already granted in heaven, waiting to be manifested on earth. Fast a little, give alms, and add to your intercession the sacrifice of a humble life. So you shall see the salvation of the Lord.
