Your honesty about how heavy and hopeless this feels is heard, and you are not a bother for sharing it. The weight you are carrying as a caregiver, the fear that cancer may have returned, the dread you feel each time you enter her room, the harassment from your sibling, and the uncertainty about housing and your cats and finances would leave anyone exhausted and discouraged.

What you describe as having no joy or hope and only dread is exactly how hopelessness settles into the heart. When we feel there is no way out and nothing we can do, sadness deepens into despair. You have been stripped of so much, and you are tired of having to sacrifice what you enjoy, and it is understandable that you feel done. Yet in the middle of that you still said you will praise the Lord. That is a precious and faithful response, even when it comes through tears.

When we keep our eyes only on the circumstances around us, the pain, the weight loss, the waiting for test results, the words of others that tomorrow is not promised, the fear of losing your home, hopelessness grows. We can think ourselves into despair. But Scripture shows a different way. In the depths of sorrow one prophet said, this I bring back to my mind, and therefore I have hope. He turned his thoughts from his affliction to the character of God. He remembered that the Lord's compassions do not fail, that His mercies are new every morning, and that great is His faithfulness. That change of focus did not remove the grief, but it brought hope where there had been only darkness and a sense of being trapped with no way out.

That same passage reminds us that even when God allows grief, He also shows compassion according to the abundance of His mercy. He does not willingly afflict or grieve His children. His compassion and mercy are at the very heart of who He is. Only those who reject His love need fear His judgment. For His own, His heart is merciful and faithful, and nothing happens apart from His sovereign care. No one can speak and make something come to pass unless the Lord allows it. He remains in control even when we feel out of control.

The Lord also sees your grief and has compassion on it. As Jesus had compassion on a father who had just been told his daughter had died and gently told him not to fear but to believe, so He has compassion on you in this long season of waiting and sorrow. He is present even in places that feel barren and defeating. When we recognize His presence there, a place of despair can become a place of worship, not because the pain is gone, but because He is there with us.

You cannot carry this alone by your own strength, and you were not meant to. Renewing your mind by setting it on the Lord, on His Word, on His promises, on His mercy that meets you each morning, can lift you from despair into hope. It is not denying the reality of the pain or the difficult decisions your loved one has made about tests and treatment, but it is choosing to remember that God is faithful and compassionate in the midst of it.

I am praying for you and for the woman you care for. I am asking the Lord to show His mercy and compassion to you both, to give you peace that guards your heart, to provide for your daily needs including a place to live where you can be cared for, to comfort you in the dread and the exhaustion, and to quiet the harassment that wounds you. I am asking Him to help you keep bringing to mind His faithfulness and new mercies each morning, so that hope can rise again even while the circumstances remain hard. May He remind you that He sees every sacrifice, that He is near to the brokenhearted, and that He will not forsake you.

We thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf and we are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer. We have been lifting up your loved one before the Lord, that pain around her colon and the weight loss that has caused such fear since her history with colon cancer and colectomy, and we have been praying over the waiting for those bloodwork results and the difficult choice she has made regarding tests and treatment.

We have also been praying for you as her caregiver. We know you shared how heavy this season has been, carrying the dread of what you might find when you visit her room, enduring harassment from your sibling, and carrying the burden of what will happen with housing and provision when she passes, especially with no savings and the concern for being able to keep your cats. We hear how stripped and done and without joy or hope you have felt, and yet how you still choose to praise the Lord as a believer even in this exhaustion from having to sacrifice what you enjoy. The Lord sees your faithfulness and your tiredness.

We continue to pray in Jesus Name for His mercy and peace to rest on your loved one and on you. We ask Him to bring comfort to her body and relief from pain, to give you strength for each day of caregiving, to guard your heart from discouragement and dread, and to provide for your future needs for housing and provision according to His riches. We pray He will quiet the conflict with your sibling and surround you with His presence and rest. We are reminded of His promise in Matt 11:28 that He gives rest to those who are weary and heavy laden, and in Psalm 34:18 that He is near to the brokenhearted, and in Isa 41:10 that He will strengthen and uphold us.

If your request was answered, please post a praise report and let us all know how the Lord has worked, whether in her health, in the test results, or in provision and peace for you. If your request does not seem to have been answered, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer. We want to keep standing with you for as long as needed.

May God bless you as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.

My ovarian cancer may have returned. There is a slim chance that the recent rise in my CA125 level is a blip, and not indicative of the return of cancer. Please pray that the cancer doesn't return, and that I stay in remission.
