Silas
Beloved of All
Thank you for sharing so openly about this painful and complicated situation. The weight you are carrying is heavy, caring for your family while disabled, facing the threat of eviction, and trying to love both your mother and your brother while also protecting everyone in the home. It is understandable that you feel torn and exhausted, and it is right that you are asking God for strength and wisdom.
Scripture teaches that wisdom is the most valuable thing we can seek, more precious than rubies or wealth, and more needed than simply having facts or information. Knowledge can tell us what is happening, but wisdom shows us how to live rightly before God in the midst of it. The beginning of that wisdom is the fear of the Lord, a reverent desire to honor Him, to hate what is evil and to turn away from it. That kind of wisdom does not come from our own ideas. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and God gives that wisdom generously to those who ask Him for it.
There is a wisdom that belongs to this world, and Scripture describes it as earthly and self focused. It often leads to envy, strife and confusion, even when it sounds compassionate. The wisdom that comes from above is different. It is pure, it loves what is holy, it seeks peace without compromising truth, and its fruit can be seen in a life that pursues righteousness and mercy. You can tell the difference by what it produces.
In your situation you need that heavenly wisdom, and God invites you to ask Him for it and to seek it as the principal thing. One way He provides wisdom is through counsel. Without counsel plans fail, but with many trustworthy counselors they are established. Please do not try to carry these decisions alone. Seek godly, wise counsel from a pastor you trust, and also from qualified people who can help with the legal and practical needs, such as legal aid, social services, and mental health support. Wisdom dwells with prudence, which means it thinks carefully, plans honestly, and considers consequences.
Loving your brother does not mean enabling behavior that harms others. To depart from evil is understanding, and true love wants what is truly good for him, which includes accountability, sobriety, and learning to live peaceably with others. Allowing him to stay in the car in violation of a restraining order, even from a desire to help because he has nowhere to go, puts your mother, you, your other brother, and your brother himself at greater risk, and it undermines the lawful boundaries that were put in place for protection after real violence and destruction. It also puts your housing at risk, and your landlord has already made clear his concern about further damage. Honoring the law and honoring the safety of the vulnerable people in your home, including your mother, is part of walking in wisdom and integrity.
It is also wise to recognize the pattern you described. Your mother loves your brother and wants to help him, yet standing against his abuse while also providing a place that violates the order keeps the old cycle going. That does not help him become well, and it drains the strength your family needs to address the eviction and your own health needs. Wisdom preserves and keeps those who love it, and sometimes that means setting firm and loving boundaries, even when it is painful.
You do not have to choose between cruelty and chaos. You can pray for your brother, want his healing, and support lawful and healthy options for him, such as the housing through the mental health program you mentioned, while also refusing to participate in what is unlawful or destructive. If you have not already, seek immediate guidance from those counselors about how to uphold the restraining order lawfully and how to communicate with the court and program staff, so that you are not forced to make these decisions in isolation or in a moment of crisis. Document what has happened, including the damage to the door and any threats, and let those who are responsible for help and oversight know the truth.
For your rental situation, wisdom is also a defense. It acts honestly and diligently. Continue to do what you can to communicate humbly and truthfully with your landlord, to keep the property respected, and to seek help for your disability related needs regarding housing. Pray that God would soften his heart and grant you favor, and also take the practical steps counselors advise.
I will pray for you, and I encourage you to keep praying along these lines. Pray that God would grant you wisdom and understanding beyond your own strength, that He would protect your mother and your household, that He would give your brother a true desire for repentance, sobriety and peace and provide lawful, appropriate housing for him apart from your home, that He would give your mother strength and clarity, and that He would grant mercy regarding your eviction and move your landlord toward patience and kindness. Pray most of all that each of you would know the grace of Jesus Christ, in whom alone we find salvation and in whom all true wisdom is found, and that He would give you daily life and peace as you walk with Him.
May the Lord who founded the earth by wisdom and who gives wisdom to all who fear Him guide your steps, guard your home, and lead you in the path that is pure and peaceable.
