Bring my son back home

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Praying for my son to come back home with me his mom. He is ### and wants to move in with his dad and get to know him. It’s 4 1/2 hours away and he has family and friends here with me where he grew up for the last 13 years. Pray he gets what he seeking from his dad and comes back home to me and finishes the rest of his highschool years here and once he graduates he can do life where God guides him.

We hear your heart, dear sister, and we stand with you in prayer, lifting your son before the throne of grace. It is natural for a mother to desire her child close, especially when they have been the center of your world for so many years. Yet we must also remember that God’s ways are higher than our ways, and His plans for your son may be unfolding in ways we do not yet understand. We pray that the Lord would give you peace as you release him into His care, trusting that the same Father who loves you also loves your son with an everlasting love.

First, we must address the importance of honoring both parents, as Scripture commands. The Lord says in Exodus 20:12, "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which Yahweh your God gives you." Your son’s desire to know his father is not wrong in itself, it is a natural part of his identity and growth. However, we must also pray that this relationship is built on godly foundations and that your son does not become entangled in any ungodly influences that may pull him away from the truth.

We rebuke any spirit of division or strife that may seek to come between you and your son, and we declare that the love of Christ would bind your family together in unity. The enemy would love nothing more than to sow discord, but we stand on the promise of Psalm 133:1, "See how good and how pleasant it is for brothers to live together in unity!" We pray that your son would experience the goodness of God in his father’s home, but also that his heart would remain tender toward you and the family he has known for so long.

We must also lift up your son’s spiritual well-being. Moving to a new place can be a time of great vulnerability, and we pray that he would be surrounded by believers who will encourage him in the faith. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us, "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it." We pray that the seeds you have sown in his life would bear fruit, even in this new season. May he seek the Lord with all his heart and not be swayed by the ways of the world.

Father, we come before You now in the mighty name of Jesus, asking that You would go before and prepare the way for him. Lord, we pray that You would soften his father’s heart to receive him with love and wisdom, and that You would guard from any harm, physically, emotionally, or spiritually. We ask that You would give him clarity and discernment in this season, that he would not be led astray but would walk in the truth of Your Word.

We also pray for you, dear mother. This transition is not easy, and we ask that You would fill you with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help you to release your son into Your hands, trusting that You hold his future. Strengthen you in moments of loneliness or fear, reminding you that You are never alone, Your heavenly Father is with you always.

Lord, we ask that You would bring back home at the right time, according to Your perfect will. Whether that is to finish high school or to step into the next season of his life, we trust that You have a plan. Until then, we pray that his time away would be a time of growth, not just in his relationship with his father, but in his relationship with You. May he come to know You more deeply and walk in the purpose You have for him.

We declare that no weapon formed against your family shall prosper, and that the bonds of love between you and your son would only grow stronger through this trial. We speak life over , that he would be a young man of God, strong in faith and unwavering in his commitment to You.

In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We feel the weight of your hope and the ache in your question, and we're sitting with you in this. It's incredibly disorienting when your son, with all his roots and relationships here, pulls toward a dad he doesn't yet really know. That longing in him is real, he's trying to answer a deep question about who he is and where he belongs. And it's hard, but we think that by letting him know your love isn't a cage, you may actually help him find his way back sooner.

A concrete step that might help steady you both: consider telling him something like, "I love you, and I want you here, but I also understand you need to see what this relationship with your dad holds. Whatever you learn there, our door and my love stay the same." That doesn't mean you agree with every detail, but it removes the battle lines and lets him pursue the answer without also wrestling you.

While he's away, your steady, low-key connection, a text about a funny memory, a quick note about a friend here who said hi, can keep the thread strong without making him feel pulled. He needs to test the world a bit, and we pray he finds that what he truly needs has been here all along.

Let's pray.

Jesus, we bring this mom and her son to you. Hold him safe in that new place, and give him eyes to see clearly and a heart quick to recognize what is true. Protect him from deep disappointment, and bring good from this season in his life. For this mom, fill the empty spaces at home with your peace. Guard her mind from worst-case stories, and give her wisdom in each small connection with her son. We ask that you bring him back to her for these last high school years, whole, settled, and ready to finish well. In your name, amen.

You cry out for your son as one who feels the sharp pain of separation, and your prayer rises as incense before the throne of grace. I cannot but lift up my own heart with yours, for the Lord who taught us to pray has Himself known the ache of a wayward child, though in a far deeper sense. You have poured out your soul, and He has surely heard.

The old father in the parable saw his prodigal son a great way off, and his first thought was not of anger but of compassion. That father’s heart broke for the ragged, starving boy who had squandered everything; he did not stand upon ceremony or demand satisfaction. He ran, he fell upon his neck, he kissed him much. And that kiss was the seal of forgiveness, the token of unbroken relationship, the pledge that all was restored. If your son has been drawn toward his earthly father in search of something he feels he lacks, I pray that the Lord will use even that restless desire to bring him to the true Father from whom all fatherhood derives its meaning. What he truly hungers for is not merely the presence of a man, but that bread which comes down from heaven, and which the soul may eat and never perish.

Be not dismayed if the path seems long and the distance painful. Our Lord’s own home mission began among the lost sheep, and He sought out the one straying lamb though ninety-nine were safe. The Spirit of God is mightily at work when a soul begins to think upon its home, even if the thoughts are yet confused. Let your hopes and your fears drive you to prayer, for the model home missionary must be one who can weep. Do not cease to wrestle with the Angel of the Covenant concerning this boy, pleading the blood of the everlasting covenant and the promises which belong to every repentant sinner returning to God. There is hope for him, there is hope for you, there is hope in the Father’s heart, for His name is God That Is Good, and He delights in mercy.

Guard yourself, dear mother, against the bitterness that the elder brother nursed, lest any root of resentment spring up and trouble your own spirit or wound your child should he return. The Lord does not receive His erring ones with icy eyes, neither must you. Let your love be such that when he does come back, and I pray it may be soon, he shall find in you the same welcoming arms that the heavenly Father extends to all who come home. Pray that he may obtain what he is seeking from his earthly father, if it be for his good, and then may the Spirit of God whisper to his soul that he has a home with you where his schooling in the fear of the Lord may be completed. Until that day, look unto Jesus, who bore our griefs and whose blood speaks better things than that of Abel. The Father saw the Son suffering for our sins, and He remembers them no more, so that when your son returns, there will be plenteous forgiveness.

Endeavor to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. The true unity of the household is not a matter of geography but of hearts knit together in the love of Christ. Live near to the Savior yourself, for that is the best way of promoting unity and drawing wanderers home. Lay hold upon those words of the apostle: “All that I have is yours,” and let your mother-heart echo the Father’s boundless provision. I commend you to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your son’s heart has turned toward a father he longs to know, and that absence has stirred a storm within your own soul. But remember the One who walked upon the sea as on pavement, who needs no south wind to make a path; He can tread upon your troubled thoughts just as they are, and bring calm. Do not let the waves overwhelm you. The same Lord who purged our sins by Himself, and sat down at the right hand of Majesty, cares for this household infinitely more than you can imagine. He mingled heaven with earth to reconcile us; will He not attend to the reconciliation of a son and mother?

Yet hear this: it is good that many pray, and I join my petition to yours, but the prayer of others profits little if we ourselves sleep. You must be alert. Stand watch over your own spirit, lest you drown yourself in the spectacle of this trial. The enemy would have you fix your eyes there day and night, returning home drunk with anxious calculations. Instead, rejoice in the Lord, not in the situation, and let that sober joy guard your heart. Do not place yourself in a position where you say, “I have no need of prayer.” Even Paul asked for the prayers of the church. Humble yourself beneath God’s hand, and He will lift you up.

Consider Paul’s wisdom when he traveled by land, not rushing, so that he might strengthen those he met. Do not hurry God. Your son is on a journey, and perhaps in the seeking he will find what he truly needs, not from an earthly father alone, but from the Father of lights. The prodigal son once demanded his portion, yet his father watched and ran to meet him when he returned broken. The approved son, who never strayed, bore witness to the abundance of grace given to the one who came back. If your boy returns, do not doubt that you will see the Father’s lavish mercy. His leaving is not the end, but a season. And while he is away, be to him like David to Jonathan’s house, loyal beyond the grave, protecting his name and his future in prayer, so that even from a distance your steadfast love calls him home.

But do not think that prayer alone suffices, as if you could cast this care into a tablet and let the devil blot it out at will. No, take this word, share it with those who stand with you, and make your home a school of the Spirit’s exercise. Though you fall, though discouragement come, though the answer tarry, rise again. Wrestle. Do not surrender until God sets the crown of peace upon your head. He who began this good tidings in your life will be faithful to complete it. Your son’s graduation into manhood is not far off; trust that the same grace that guides him then can guide him now. Keep your lamp burning, and when the knock comes at your door, you will open with joy.

I hear the ache in your heart, and I want you to know that you are not alone in this. The scriptures show us that the deepest kind of love is often the love of a parent for a child. It’s that same love that had a father looking down the road every day, waiting and hoping for the silhouette of a son who had walked away. You are doing that now, watching, praying, loving from a distance even when the road feels four and a half hours long.

Your son is at an age where questions about identity and belonging become urgent. He wants to know his dad, to fill a space in his life that maybe feels empty. In God’s mercy, He sometimes allows us to take journeys we think we need, only to bring us back with a clearer sense of who we really are and where we truly belong. The prodigal son had to go to a far country and lose everything before he came to himself and realized that home was not a place of bondage but of blessing. Pray that your son, in his pursuit of his father, will ultimately be drawn to the Father who never moves, the One who gives every good gift.

Hold on to the truth that nothing is wasted. The same Father who saw his beloved Son willingly suffer separation so that we could be brought near now sees your tears. He knows what it is to long for a child. And He has promised that those who trust in Him are not slaves but sons and daughters, heirs of a grace that never runs out. That grace covers your son even now. You can release him into God’s hands, not with passive resignation but with the bold faith that the Spirit can whisper to him in places you cannot go. The same voice that calls us out of darkness can call him back, and when he comes, you will be there, not with a list of I told you so’s, but with the robe and the ring of a love that never stopped.

Pray for your son to find what he is really seeking, a sense of worth and identity that no earthly father, no matter how well-meaning, can fully give. Only the Son reveals the Father, and when your son comes to know the love of God in Christ, he will find a home in his own heart that can’t be moved by geography. Keep lifting him up. The enemy would love to use this separation to sow bitterness or despair, but the Father’s goal is always restoration. He turns the hearts of children back to where they can flourish.

In the meantime, the community here is standing with you. You are not clinging to a son but entrusting him to the One who formed him in your womb. Whether these months take him down that interstate or bring him back sooner, God’s purpose is to shape him into a man who honors both his earthly parents and his heavenly Father. So take courage. The love that first bound you to him is a thread that distance cannot break, and the God who raised His own Son from the dead is more than able to restore what feels lost. We are praying with you.

We want to thank you for the privilege of standing with you in prayer for your son. It has been on our hearts to lift him up before the Lord, asking that God’s will be done in his life and that he would find the guidance, love, and wisdom he seeks from his father. We’ve prayed for peace in your heart as his mother, trusting that the Lord is working even when the path isn’t clear.

If your son has returned home or if you’ve seen God’s hand at work in this situation in any way, we would love to rejoice with you—please share a praise report so we can celebrate His faithfulness together. If the answer hasn’t come yet, or if you’re still waiting and longing for his return, we encourage you to post this request again so we can continue to intercede on your behalf. We believe in a God who hears, who cares, and who is able to restore what has been broken.

May the Lord comfort you, strengthen your faith, and draw your son closer to Himself—and to you—with each passing day. We pray this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus.
