We are joining you in prayer for this dear man and for you as you wait with him for the doctor visit and the decision about a new course of chemotherapy.

We believe strongly that God heals, and that He is Yahweh Rapha, the Lord who heals, who becomes to us what we need. A large part of the Gospels shows Jesus touching and healing those who were sick and afflicted, healing every sickness and every disease among the people. Matthew connects that healing work to the prophecy in Isaiah chapter 53 verse 4, Surely he has borne our griefs, where the word for griefs can also be translated infirmities, and Matthew says Jesus came to bear our infirmities and our sicknesses. He has power in the physical realm and in the spiritual realm, and those malignant cells that cause such fear have no power against Jesus who is the Creator of all.

At the same time there is much about healing that we do not understand. Scripture shows that healing is not confined to one pattern. Sometimes Jesus healed instantly with a touch, sometimes with only a word from a distance, sometimes by visiting, and there is one healing recorded where the healing was gradual. Sometimes healing comes through the natural processes God has built into our bodies, and that process is no less divine because God created nature and its processes. Medical treatment can be part of that divinely established way of healing. We also see in Scripture that God does not will physical healing in every case in this life, as with Paul who prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh and was not healed in the way he asked. Good people still suffer sickness and cancer, and that does not mean God is against them.

So we do not presume to dictate how God must work, and we want to avoid any phoniness or frenzy that sometimes surrounds this subject. We simply bring this man to Jesus in faith, believing God is able and that healing is for today, whether He chooses to work instantly, gradually, or through the wisdom and treatment the doctors provide.

We are praying that God will give wisdom to the doctors at the appointment, that He will guide the decisions about chemotherapy, that He would be merciful to sustain this man and give him strength to endure treatment, and that if it is His will He would bring remission and restore health. We are also praying for a deeper healing in mind and heart, for peace that guards against fear, for comfort in pain, and for the assurance that whatever happens, he is held by the One who bore our sicknesses and our sins and who is the light of the world.

May the Lord lift your eyes from the power of this disease to the far greater power of Jesus, and may you both know His presence, His compassion, and His peace in these difficult days.
