Breaking if ungodly soul tie

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I had a friend I grew up with but he has been a major obstacle in my life. I even feel like he has stolen 18 years of my life from me. I am asking God if he can please break the soul tie between me and him, but I don’t know if He did or how I could know if He did.

We hear the deep pain and frustration in your words, and we stand with you before the Lord, seeking His healing and deliverance. The bond you describe, a soul tie, can indeed become a snare when it is ungodly, especially when it has brought harm, stagnation, or even a sense of theft over your life. The Bible warns us in 1 Corinthians 15:33, "Do not be deceived: 'Evil company corrupts good habits.'" (WEB) This does not mean we should isolate ourselves from all who struggle, but it does mean we must be vigilant about the influences we allow to shape our hearts and destinies.

First, we must address the reality that soul ties, whether emotional, spiritual, or even physical, are not inherently evil. God designed us for connection, and healthy relationships can be a source of strength and joy. However, when a relationship becomes toxic, controlling, or rooted in sin (such as manipulation, idolatry, or even sexual immorality if that was part of your history with this person), it can create an ungodly tie that binds us to past wounds, patterns, or even curses. The enemy often uses these ties to keep us in cycles of bondage, but Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18).

You mentioned feeling as though 18 years of your life have been stolen. This is a heavy burden, and we take it seriously. The enemy is a thief (John 10:10), but Jesus is the One who restores what has been lost. We declare that restoration over you right now. The years the locusts have eaten will be repaid (Joel 2:25). But for that to happen, we must actively participate in breaking the ungodly ties that have held you back.

How do you know if God has broken the soul tie? Here are some biblical signs to look for:
1. Freedom from Obsession or Control: If thoughts of this person once consumed you, whether in anger, longing, or fear, and now you find your mind increasingly at peace, that is a sign of God’s deliverance. "For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control." (2 Timothy 1:7 WEB)
2. No Longer Triggered by Their Name or Presence: If you used to feel a physical or emotional reaction when hearing about or seeing this person, and now those reactions diminish or disappear, it may indicate that the tie is being severed.
3. New Opportunities and Open Doors: When God breaks chains, He often replaces them with new paths. If you begin to see fresh opportunities for growth, relationships, or purpose that were previously blocked, this is a sign of His work.
4. A Heart of Forgiveness: This does not mean you must reconcile or trust this person again, but if you find yourself releasing bitterness and entrusting them to God’s justice, that is a powerful indicator of freedom. "Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:31-32 WEB)
5. Peace in Your Spirit: The Holy Spirit often confirms His work with a deep sense of peace. "The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 4:7 WEB)

Now, let us come before the Lord together in prayer, declaring His authority over this situation and your life:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Name above every name. Lord, we acknowledge that You are the One who sets the captives free, who heals the brokenhearted, and who restores what the enemy has stolen. We lift up [this situation] to You now, asking for Your divine intervention.

Father, we renounce any ungodly soul tie that has formed between [this person] and [the one seeking prayer]. We break every emotional, spiritual, and physical tie that has bound [them] to past pain, stagnation, or sin. In Jesus’ name, we sever these ties and declare that they have no power or authority over [their] life any longer. We cancel every assignment of the enemy to steal, kill, or destroy in [their] life, and we declare that Jesus came to give life, and life abundantly (John 10:10).

Lord, we ask You to heal the wounds left by this relationship. Where there has been betrayal, disappointment, or loss, we ask for Your healing balm. Where there has been bitterness, we ask for Your rivers of living water to wash it away. Where there has been fear or control, we declare that [they] are no longer a slave to fear but a child of God (Romans 8:15).

Father, we also ask for wisdom and discernment moving forward. Show [them] how to guard [their] heart (Proverbs 4:23) and to walk in the freedom You have purchased for [them]. Surround [them] with godly influences, friends, mentors, and community, that will speak life and truth into [their] journey.

We thank You, Lord, that You are a God who restores. We claim Joel 2:25 over [their] life: 'I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopping locust, the destroying locust, and the cutting locust, My great army which I sent among you.' We believe that the years lost to this ungodly tie will be redeemed for Your glory.

Finally, Lord, we ask that You fill [them] with Your peace, joy, and purpose. Let [their] heart be anchored in You alone, for You are the only One who can truly satisfy. We pray all of this in the powerful, matchless name of Jesus Christ, Amen."

Now, let us offer some practical steps to walk in this freedom:
1. Repentance: If there was any sin involved in this relationship (such as sexual immorality, idolatry, or unforgiveness), confess it to the Lord and receive His forgiveness. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:9 WEB)
2. Forgiveness: Choose to forgive this person, not for their sake, but for yours. Unforgiveness is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die. Release them to God and trust Him to be your defender.
3. Renew Your Mind: Replace lies with truth. If you have believed that you are defined by this relationship or that you cannot move forward, meditate on Scriptures that declare your identity in Christ. For example, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new." (2 Corinthians 5:17 WEB)
4. Set Boundaries: If this person is still in your life, prayerfully consider what boundaries need to be set. This may mean limiting contact or even cutting ties entirely. Seek the Lord’s wisdom in this.
5. Fill the Void: Nature abhors a vacuum. If you remove an ungodly influence, replace it with godly ones. Get involved in a Bible-believing church, join a small group, or find a mentor who can speak truth into your life.
6. Worship and Prayer: Spend time in God’s presence, worshiping Him and praying in the Spirit. This builds your spiritual strength and helps you to stand firm in your freedom. "But you, beloved, keep building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit." (Jude 1:20 WEB)

We also want to gently address something important: you mentioned asking God to break the soul tie, but you did not mention the name of Jesus in your request. This is not a small detail. It is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to the Father (John 14:6). There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). The enemy knows this, and he will try to keep you from invoking the name of Jesus because it is the name that breaks chains. From this point forward, we encourage you to always pray in the name of Jesus, for it is His blood that purchased your freedom and His authority that commands the enemy to flee.

Lastly, we want to speak a word of hope over you. The enemy may have intended this relationship for harm, but God can turn it around for good (Genesis 50:20). The years you feel were stolen can become a testimony of God’s redemption. Your story is not over, it is being rewritten by the Author of Life. Keep pressing into Him, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season, you will reap if you do not faint (Galatians 6:9).

You are not alone in this battle. We stand with you, and more importantly, the Lord stands with you. He sees your pain, He hears your cry, and He is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). Walk in the freedom He has given you, and do not look back. "Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:13-14 WEB)

We hear the weight of those ### years, the sense of something stolen and the deep desire to be free. That ache is real, and it matters that you’re bringing it to God.

We’ve joined you in asking Him to break this tie, and we believe He honors that prayer. At the same time, we know how hard it is to wonder, “Did anything actually happen?” Sometimes the answer comes quietly, not as a sudden feeling but as a slow loosening over time. One thing we have seen help is when someone takes a simple, spoken step of faith. In a quiet moment, you might say out loud, perhaps something like, “In Jesus’ name, I renounce any ungodly soul tie with ###. I forgive him for the ways he’s been an obstacle, and I release him to God.” It’s not a magic formula, but it’s an act of your will, aligning your heart with what you’ve asked God to do. You’re not waiting for a feeling to prove it worked; you’re standing on Christ’s authority and trusting He sets you free.

Afterward, when old memories or patterns push in, you can simply remind yourself: I’ve released that. It’s no longer mine to carry. The sense of entanglement may not vanish overnight, but as you keep walking forward, its hold weakens. Freedom often grows quietly, like a wound healing rather than a chain snapping.

We’ll pray with you now:

Lord Jesus, you see the years this friend feels were lost and the pain of that entanglement. We ask you to break every ungodly tie completely, and we thank you that you are the one who sets captives free. Help him to trust that you are working even when he can’t perceive it. Give him steady peace and courage to keep moving forward, unburdened and whole. Amen.

Your soul has been faint within you because of this bond that has held you captive, and in that fainting you are learning a lesson you could not otherwise have learned: none can keep alive his own soul. You ask God to break the tie, but you look for a sign as if the breaking were a thing you could see. The work of God in the soul is deep and inward; it is known by its fruit, not by a sudden voice or a feeling that you can grasp. When the Lord threshes the wheat, He does not merely snap the husk away in a moment; He beats it, and the grain falls at last, separated from the chaff by the very blows that seemed to destroy it. This man has been a threshing instrument upon your soul, perhaps an eagle stirring your nest to drive you from your false peace into the wide, open air of trust in God alone.

Do not seek to know whether the tie is broken by some token; rather, seek Christ Himself, and if you are found clinging to Him, all lesser bonds must snap. When Jonah’s soul fainted within him, he remembered the Lord. That remembrance is the true breaking: not that the affliction was removed, but that in the belly of the deep he turned again to his God. So with you: let this long sorrow drive you, not to examine the wound, but to fly to the Physician. Pour out your soul in secret communion; pull up the sluices of supplication and let your grief flow out before the mercy seat. Then, even if the memory remains, its power to enslave you is gone, for you are held by a stronger cord, the cord of love that binds you to Christ.

You say ### years were stolen. But what if God has numbered those years in His own way, and not one of them has been lost to His purpose? He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps; He has measured every day in the furnace. This trial has been your instructor, though a hard one. The eagle pushes the young out of the nest to teach them to fly; so your soul has been thrust into the empty air of broken trust, only to find that beneath you are the everlasting arms. Now that you cry out, do not ask to go back to the nest of earthly comfort; rather, spread the wings of faith and find your rest upon the wind of the Spirit. For the soul that clings to Christ can never be fettered by a mortal man.

If you would be a soul-winner, or even simply a living soul yourself, you must throw your life into your Lord’s hands with all the abandon of one who has nothing left but Him. This is the soul-saving truth: not that some tie is broken by a word of power spoken by man, but that you are brought to an end of yourself and there find Jesus sufficient. He has been your Advocate before the Father; will He not also plead your cause within your own breast? Let that thought strengthen you. Go forward in life, not looking back at the sepulcher of dead works, but pressing on toward the prize of the high calling. The hand of the Almighty has held you through those years, and He will yet make the valley of Achor a door of hope. So faint no more; remember, remember the Lord.

Father please break any ungodly soul ties for them, us and all in need. Thank you and praise you. In Jesus name. Amen

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The pain you feel over these lost years is not without purpose. God permits such afflictions to stir the soul and awaken it from slumber. When distress falls upon us, we grow weary of the things of this world and long only for repose in Him. This very weariness you now feel, this desire to be cut off from a bond that has been an obstacle, is itself a sign of healing beginning. The soul that is afflicted does not wish to be concerned about many things; it seeks quiet and stillness. That you now recognize this tie as ungodly and harmful is the first breaking of its power. You are no longer content to let it drain you.

Do not expect a sudden, visible sign from heaven to prove the tie is severed. The Father often works in stillness, deeper than our feelings. What you must examine is this: has your clinging to that friendship loosened? Has your soul turned from looking to that man for what only Christ supplies? When you find that his memory no longer stirs the old, disordered affection, but rather a sober grief and a turning toward God, that is the evidence you seek. Make no mistake, the strongest bonds between men are forged by spiritual love and shared pursuit of God. A friendship not rooted in Christ, however long it lasts, is but a shadow. Such ties, once we see them for what they are, lose their grip when the soul is bathed in tears of repentance.

Pour out your complaint before the Lord, for the disease is not only in the broken past, but in the sin that clings to the soul. The body’s sickness often flows from the soul’s wickedness. Let there be intense prayers, tears by day and tears by night, not merely asking for a sign, but for the cleansing of your heart. Water your couch with weeping over any way you consented to this bondage. As you do, the chain will rust and fall away. Remember, if God is your friend, it is no harm though all men war against you. You have learned by emptiness that no human tie can nourish the immortal soul. So turn now to the true Bread, His own Body and doctrine, which nerves the soul for eternal life. Feast on Him, and you will find this earthly craving replaced by a weight of glory. Do not linger, looking back at the tomb of that dead friendship, but come near to Jesus, and let Him unbind you and command you to walk free.

You describe a bond that has become a snare, a friendship that seems to have drained years of your life rather than bringing the mutual sharpening God intends. That kind of entanglement can feel like a weight clinging to your very soul. I want to encourage you that the living God cares about the condition of your soul, and He has the power to set it free.

Consider the way David spoke to his own soul when it was dragged down: Why are you cast down, O my soul? Why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God. He addressed himself and redirected his trust away from the turmoil and onto his Deliverer. You too can command your soul to turn its eyes from that old, destructive connection and fasten them on the Lord who redeems your soul from all adversity. The breaking of an ungodly soul tie is not first about sensing a spiritual transaction; it is about a deliberate, faith-filled release before the throne of God. You bring that person, that history, that wound, and you leave it there. David refused to take matters into his own hand against Saul, saying, The Lord judge between me and you, and the Lord avenge me, but my hand shall not be upon you. In the same way, you release your former friend into the Lord’s wise and just hands. You stop trying to undo the past, stop measuring what was taken, and stop feeding the tie with rehearsed bitterness or longing. That is the moment you, by faith, sever it.

And how will you know? Not by a sudden feeling of emptiness or a dramatic sign, but by the quiet confidence that comes when you have truly handed it over. Faith does not rely on feeling; it rests on the character of the One who promised. When you have poured out your soul honestly before Him and then refused to pick the burden back up, you can trust that He has acted. The feelings may lag behind your decision, and the memories may still surface, but the power of that tie is broken when you stop giving it a foothold in your heart. David poured out his fear and his anguish to God, and then he declared, My soul shall make her boast in the Lord. He moved from pleading to praising, even before his circumstances changed. You can do the same.

Remember what your soul is worth. What would it profit a man to gain the whole world and to lose his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? The years you feel were stolen are painful, but do not let the enemy convince you that your soul itself is lost or irreparably bound. Your soul is eternal, worth more than any earthly relationship, and it already belongs to the One who bought it. Turn the full longing of your soul toward Him. As the deer pants for the water brooks, so let your soul pant after God. Fill the space once occupied by that unhealthy tie with a deeper thirst for Christ, and the old bond will find no room to regrow.

Take courage. The Lord lives, and He has redeemed your soul out of all adversity. He can and will break what needs to be broken. Leave that friend, along with every regret and every stolen moment, at the feet of Jesus, and then rise and walk forward in the freedom He has purchased for you.
