The request made for this young man is right and urgent. When the body swells with such a perilous tumor, it is like a corrupt humor puffing up the flesh, and we ought to seek the true Physician. But understand that the gift of healings, precious as it is, is not the greatest thing. Many have sought a sign, yet love is the more excellent way. The power to heal belongs to God alone, and He dispenses these gifts as He wills, not to all.
Do not, therefore, fix your hope entirely upon the miracle, as if its absence would mean abandonment. Our High Priest is not like those of old, who died and could no longer aid. He ever lives to make intercession for us. This is the strong consolation: He is able to save to the uttermost those who come to God by Him. He needs no successor, and His intercession is continual. When you pray for the tumor to diminish, pray first that the man be drawn near to God through Christ, for faith makes us sons of God, not by the shadow of the Law, but by adoption.
The healing of the body is a lesser work than the salvation of the soul. The one is temporal, the other eternal. Therefore, let the prayers offered not be mere soothing that leads to harm, as if life in this world were the only treasure. Seek the greater healing, and in that pursuit, whether the tumor diminishes or remains, he will be made whole in the manner that truly matters, for the power of the Lord encompasses both chastisement and cure according to His perfect will.
