Good and Faithful Servant
My boyfriend and I are unequally yoked in a lot of ways and lately, he keeps expressing displeasure at the differences we have. He is a professing Christian but holds to certain false teachings. There are also other ways that we differ. I broke up with him a little while ago because I was struggling with these differences and some other things but we were both so heartbroken that I got back together with him. But these differences now continue to be a problem. It was not this difficult before. Please pray about all this. Thank you.

We hear the deep struggle in your heart, and we lift this situation before the Lord with great care and concern. The Bible is clear that being unequally yoked with an unbeliever, or even with a professing believer who holds to false teachings, can bring immense spiritual and emotional turmoil. Scripture warns us, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what communion has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). While your boyfriend professes Christ, the differences in doctrine and conviction are causing strain, and we must take this seriously before the Lord.

We also must address the nature of your relationship. The term "boyfriend" implies a romantic attachment that is not yet bound by the covenant of marriage, and Scripture calls us to purity and intentionality in our relationships. If this relationship is not moving toward marriage, particularly a marriage that honors God’s design, then it may be wise to reconsider its foundation. "Marriage is honorable among all, and the bed undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers" (Hebrews 13:4). If you are not married, we must pray for clarity and wisdom to either pursue a godly marriage or to step away for the sake of your spiritual well-being.

The pain of breaking up and reconciling is understandable, but we must ask: Is this relationship drawing you closer to Christ, or is it pulling you away from His truth? False teachings can be subtle yet dangerous, leading hearts astray from the simplicity of the Gospel. "Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world" (1 John 4:1). We must pray for discernment, not just for you, but for your boyfriend as well, that he would be rooted in sound doctrine and surrendered to God’s Word.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance for this situation. Lord, we ask that You would reveal Your will clearly, whether this relationship is honoring to You or if it is causing spiritual harm. We pray for ###’s heart, that You would give her strength to walk in truth and to seek Your kingdom above all else. If this relationship is not aligned with Your Word, we ask that You would grant her the courage to step away, trusting You with her future.

We also lift up ###’s boyfriend to You, Father. If he is truly Yours, we pray that You would correct any false teachings in his heart and draw him into a deeper relationship with You. Soften his heart to receive Your truth, and if he is not walking in obedience to You, we ask that You would convict him and lead him to repentance.

Lord, we rebuke any spirit of confusion, division, or compromise in this relationship. We declare that Your Word is truth, and we stand on the promise that You will guide those who seek You. Give ### peace that surpasses all understanding, and let her trust in You alone. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to seek counsel from mature believers who can help you discern God’s will in this matter. Surround yourself with those who will speak truth into your life, even when it is difficult. Remember, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will direct your paths" (Proverbs 3:5-6). You are not alone in this struggle, and we stand with you in prayer.

Thank you for trusting us with this. What you describe sounds genuinely wearying: loving someone, seeing real differences, breaking up in pain, reuniting because the grief felt too heavy, and then finding the same tensions still waiting. That is not a failure in you. Early on, differences can hide under hope. Now they are surfacing, and that is hard but also clarifying.

One practical step might be to give yourself a season of clarity rather than pressure. Ask a mature Christian you trust, perhaps a pastor or an older woman who knows you both, to help you work through the core question: can the two of you truly walk in the same direction in faith and life? If the answer keeps coming back uncertain, that uncertainty matters. You do not have to decide everything today, but you can stop ignoring what keeps surfacing.

We are praying for you as you seek God’s direction, and also for your boyfriend, that if he belongs to the Lord he would be drawn toward truth.

Father, we lift up this woman who is weary and torn. Give her clear sight, steady peace, and courage to honor what you show her. Guard her from fear of loneliness and from the pull of a false peace. Make your will plain, and comfort her in the waiting. In Jesus’ name, amen.

I will pray for you, but not that this uneasy yoke may be made comfortable. I will pray that you may have grace to obey the plain command, Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers. You say he is a professing Christian, yet he holds to certain false teachings. A profession joined to error is no safe ground for your soul. You have already felt the galling of that yoke, and you broke the bond once. Heartbreak is a sharp medicine, but it is not half so bitter as a lifelong wedlock to falsehood. You thought the yoke of Christ hard when we reminded you of that precept. You rejected the yoke of Christ in this matter, and how have you found it since? You returned to the same yoke, and the same differences now press upon you more heavily than before. That is the Lord warning you. Do not ask Him to bless what He has forbidden. Rather ask Him to give you a holy resolution to be free from it.

If this young man will not repent of his false teaching and bow to the truth of Scripture, let him go, however much it costs. A false peace now would be a false justification of sin. The old self will not tolerate the new creature, and the longer you remain, the worse the conflict grows. Better to break an unlawful bond than to break the law of Christ. If there has been any intimacy or arrangement that belongs only within marriage, that also must be repented of and ended without delay.

I shall pray that God gives you courage to do what you know to be right, that He opens your eyes to the danger, and that if this young man is only a false professor, the Lord would grant him true repentance unto the acknowledging of the truth. But I cannot ask God to bless or preserve this relationship as it stands. That would be to set aside the word of reconciliation and to speak peace where there is no peace. Stand clear until the Lord makes him a true yokefellow under the yoke of Christ.

Lord, give this troubled soul an unflinching conscience, a will that fears Thee more than heartbreak, and a heart that finds its rest in Christ alone. Bring the young man to saving faith or deliver Thy child from the snare. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

You have described a divided house, and the division is not over small preferences but over truth. You are seeing what happens when false teaching is treated as a private opinion: it does not stay private. It presses against love until love itself is worn thin.

I will pray, as you ask, but not by asking God to bless this bond as it now stands. I will pray that He gives you light to see clearly and courage to obey. I will pray that He exposes every false teaching your friend holds, that he may repent. I will pray that you neither settle for error nor mistake strong feeling for a sign of God’s approval.

The Church has never been free from false brethren and false teachers. From the beginning the enemy has set lies next to truth, and sometimes the hardest warfare is not outside but inside, among those who name the same Lord. So do not be surprised that he can profess Christ and yet refuse some of Christ’s words. The danger is precisely that a profession without submission becomes a snare. When a man is a lover of his own opinions more than a lover of God, the bond will become a chain, not a help.

You have already learned the pattern. You broke the bond, the pain was heavy, and you returned. But returning did not remove the differences. It only put them back in the same house. The sorrow of separation is real, but the sorrow of a divided house is longer. The fact that it was not this difficult before may mean that truth was being quieted for the sake of peace. Now truth is speaking again, and it will not stop.

If you marry, you would be bound not only to a man but to his doctrine, his spiritual direction, and the life he is willing to build. That is why the apostle warns against being unequally yoked. A partner who holds to false teaching will pull you away from sound faith, or you will spend your life fighting the pull. Neither is small.

The hard course is the one you already began. Do not re-enter this bond only because parting hurts. Heartbreak is not a sign that God meant the relationship to continue. It is a sign that affection is strong, but strong affection cannot make error safe. Return only if there is genuine repentance from false teaching and a humble readiness to be corrected by Scripture, and not before. Until then, let the distance remain.

Pray, and I will pray with you, that God gives you a clear conscience and a quiet heart. Ask Him not to bless what He calls unequal, but to bless you with obedience and to grant your friend the fear of God. Peace that comes from avoiding conflict is not peace. The peace you need is peace with God, even when it costs you a human bond.

Thank you for sharing this so honestly and for asking for prayer. I can hear how painful and confusing this has been, especially breaking up and then coming back together because the heartbreak felt so overwhelming, only to find the same differences are still there and feel even heavier than before.

God's Word gives clear wisdom for this kind of situation. Scripture says do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers, and asks what fellowship righteousness has with unrighteousness and what communion light has with darkness. That picture is of two animals yoked together trying to pull in different directions. It was written about marriage, but it applies to any close binding relationship where two people are joined together and must walk as one. When you are yoked unequally, you are always in an unequal situation because you are not living by the same standard or the same ethic. What grieves your conscience before the Lord may not grieve the other person at all, and over time that pulls you apart rather than together. Like oil and water, the two do not mix, and the yoke does not become easier with time. It becomes harder, especially if you are looking toward marriage.

You mentioned he professes to be a Christian but holds to false teaching. That is part of what makes being unequally yoked so serious. The Bible warns often about false prophets and false teachers, from the Old Testament through the teaching of Jesus and the apostles. They do not come with a label that makes them easy to recognize. They often come in sheep's clothing and look like sheep. One reason they are so deceptive is that they do not teach error all the time. They often say many things that are true, which is why people listen to them, but mixed in is teaching that leads away from the truth. Usually it is pleasant to hear and offers false promises or false assurance, telling people they can go on in a way that Scripture warns against and that it is fine.

That is why Scripture tells us to try the spirits to see whether they are of God, and to watch the fruit. The test is what is taught about Jesus Christ and whether the teaching and the life that follows lines up with the whole counsel of God's Word, not just parts of it. False teaching is not a small difference of opinion. To be misled about the truth of the gospel and the commands of God affects the soul and brings people into bondage rather than freedom. It is right for you to be troubled by this difference.

Many people in your situation feel that theirs is the exception. The thought comes, we love each other, love will cover this, he will change. But love, as real as it is, does not remove a foundational division in faith and truth. Hoping someone will change after you are more deeply committed often leads to deeper heartbreak later, because the differences you see now tend to become more pronounced, not less, when life's pressures and decisions about marriage, family, and how to follow Jesus must be made together.

The heartbreak you felt after the breakup is understandable, and it is painful to feel torn. But the depth of pain is not by itself a sign that you should remain in a relationship that Scripture warns will keep you unequally yoked. Feelings are real, but they are not a reliable guide for whether a relationship is right before the Lord.

I will pray for you, not that God would bless a yoke that pulls you away from obedience, but that He would give you clarity, courage, and peace to follow His Word. I pray that God will give you wisdom to see this relationship truthfully in the light of Scripture, strength to obey what you know is right even when it hurts, and comfort as you trust Him with your future. I pray also for your boyfriend, that God would open his eyes to any false teaching he has embraced and draw him to the truth of the gospel and to a faithful walk with Jesus, whether or not your paths remain together.

If you have not already, seek counsel from a mature, Bible believing pastor or godly older believer who knows you both and can help you evaluate his teaching and your relationship in light of Scripture. Keep staying in the Word daily, and ask the Lord to help you be separate in the way 2 Corinthians 6 describes, coming out from what is unclean and walking as His daughter in obedience and holiness. The Lord sees your struggle and He will be faithful to guide you as you seek to honor Him above all else.
