We hear your heart, dear sister, and we lift you up before the throne of grace with deep compassion. This is a heavy burden you are carrying, both for your own health and for the man you care about. We want to first acknowledge the weight of your emotions: the fear, the frustration, the overwhelm, and the sorrow. These are not trivial things, and we do not take them lightly. You are not alone in this struggle.
First, we must address the foundation of this relationship. Scripture is clear that marriage is a sacred covenant between one man and one woman, designed by God to reflect Christ’s love for the Church (Ephesians 5:22-33). While your concern for your boyfriend’s health is understandable, we must gently but firmly remind you that the term "boyfriend" implies a relationship that falls short of God’s design. Courtship should always be pursued with the intent of marriage, and any romantic involvement outside of that commitment opens the door to spiritual attack, emotional turmoil, and temptation. The Bible warns us, "Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?" (2 Corinthians 6:14). If he is not a believer in Jesus Christ, or if this relationship is not moving toward marriage, we must prayerfully consider whether this is where God is leading you.
The stubbornness you describe is not just a personality trait, it may be a spiritual stronghold. Proverbs 16:18 warns, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." Stubbornness often stems from pride, and pride is a tool the enemy uses to keep people from seeking help, wisdom, or even salvation. We rebuke that spirit of pride in Jesus’ name and declare that it has no place in this situation. We pray that God would humble his heart and open his eyes to the truth of his need, not just for medical care, but for the Great Physician, Jesus Christ. If he does not know the Lord, this is the most urgent matter at hand. "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" (Mark 8:36). We must pray for his salvation above all else.
We also lift up your concerns about his doctors. It is wise to be discerning, as not all who claim to heal are aligned with God’s will. Jeremiah 17:9 reminds us, "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?" Even those in the medical field are not immune to deception or misguided motives. We pray for divine wisdom for you both in seeking care, doctors who honor God, who operate with integrity, and who will provide the best possible treatment. We ask the Lord to guide your steps and lead you to the right resources. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him." (James 1:5).
The spiritual warfare you sense is real. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he will use illness, fear, and relational strife to do so. But we declare that Jesus has already overcome the world (John 16:33), and we stand on His victory. We rebuke every spirit of fear, despair, and division that is attacking this relationship. We command it to flee in the name of Jesus. We also pray for spiritual armor over you both, "Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil." (Ephesians 6:11). This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
Your own health is a priority as well. It is not selfish to care for yourself, it is stewardship. "Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body." (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). We pray for healing, strength, and peace over you. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We ask Him to calm your mind, steady your emotions, and give you the grace to endure this season.
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this sister and the man she cares for. Lord, we first ask for Your forgiveness if this relationship has strayed from Your design. We pray for clarity and wisdom to discern Your will in this situation. If this is not a relationship that honors You, we ask for the strength to walk away, trusting in Your perfect plan.
Father, we lift up this man’s health to You. You are the God who heals (Exodus 15:26), and we ask for Your mercy and intervention. Soften his heart, Lord. Break through the stubbornness and pride that may be keeping him from seeking help or from surrendering to You. We declare that no weapon formed against him shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we rebuke every spirit of infirmity in Jesus’ name.
We pray for the doctors involved in his care. Guide them, Lord, and give them wisdom beyond their own understanding. Lead them to the right treatments, the right diagnoses, and the right path for healing. Protect him from any malice or incompetence, and surround him with people who will advocate for his well-being.
For our sister, Lord, we ask for Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Guard her heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Heal her body, strengthen her spirit, and fill her with hope. Help her to cast all her anxieties on You, because You care for her (1 Peter 5:7). Give her the courage to stand firm in faith, even when the circumstances seem overwhelming.
We also pray for spiritual protection over both of them. Lord, we ask that You would expose any schemes of the enemy and dismantle every stronghold. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in Your truth and Your light. Surround them with godly counsel and community, that they may not be isolated in this struggle.
Above all, Lord, we pray for salvation. If this man does not know You, we ask that You would draw him to Yourself. Soften his heart to receive the gospel, and let him experience the life-changing power of Jesus Christ. For our sister, we pray that she would continue to grow in her faith, trusting in You no matter the outcome.
We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the only name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). We trust in Your goodness, Your mercy, and Your sovereignty. May Your will be done in this situation, and may Your name be glorified. Amen.
Sister, we want to leave you with this encouragement: "Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved." (Psalm 55:22). You are not carrying this alone. The Lord sees your tears, He hears your cries, and He is working even when you cannot see it. Keep your eyes fixed on Him, and do not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). If this relationship is not of God, trust that He will lead you out of it. If it is, trust that He will sustain you through it. Either way, He is faithful.
We also urge you to seek godly counsel, whether from a pastor, a mature Christian mentor, or a trusted friend in the faith. You do not have to navigate this alone. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety." Surround yourself with people who will pray with you, speak truth to you, and hold you accountable.
Lastly, remember that your identity is not found in this relationship or in your circumstances. Your identity is found in Christ. You are His beloved, His child, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Hebrews 13:5). Hold fast to that truth, and let it anchor your soul in this storm.
