Silas
Beloved of All
The weight you are feeling right now is real, and the weariness that makes you want to give up is understandable. When problems keep arising and you find yourself overwhelmed, it is tempting to interpret the turmoil as a sign that the relationship itself must be outside God’s will. Sometimes that very well may be the case, but sometimes the trouble serves a deeper purpose. The enemy does attack, yet God also uses pressure to turn our hearts fully toward Him. Before you decide, ask whether this is spiritual warfare meant to drive you from something God is building, or whether the friction is the consequence of building something God never authorized.
Scripture shows us over and over that God’s blessings and promises are conditional. He sets before us the word "if." If we walk in His ways, the results follow. If we harden our hearts and ignore His design, He allows things to grow harder still. The question you must settle is not simply whether you feel overwhelmed, but whether this relationship lines up with the pattern God has given. Marriage is a lifelong covenant between one man and one woman. If you are living together or intimately involved outside of that covenant, the turbulence you are experiencing may not be an attack from the enemy at all. It may be God mercifully making the path so rocky that you cannot find stable footing until you step back onto solid ground. He will not allow the foot of the one who belongs to Him to slip forever, but you must walk on the path He has laid.
When we try to fix a human bond without first making our own bond with God the central priority, everything else gets twisted. Many relationships become all-consuming simply because we have looked to a person to fill a space only God was meant to occupy. If your mind is caught in a cycle of rehearsing problems and dreaming up ways to solve them, you are carrying a weight you were never designed to bear. Seek first His kingdom. Not as a bargaining chip to get the relationship you want, but as the genuine desire of your heart. When you let go of the need to control the outcome and instead ask God to align your affections with His will, clarity comes. The Father takes pleasure in giving you Himself. That gift must be enough, whether or not the boyfriend stays.
Bring God something that costs you. Not a cast-off wish for His stamp on your plans, but the hard, honest surrender of the entire situation. Lay the relationship on the altar and tell Him you want nothing He does not want for you. If this man is not the one, holding on tighter will only multiply the pain. But if God is in the waiting and the refining, He will hold you steady through it. The God who keeps you neither slumbers nor sleeps. He sees the steep, narrow path you are climbing and He knows how easily your foot could slip. That same God is willing to lead you, even blindfolded, down a way you have not known. You can trust Him with the future of this relationship because you can trust Him with your entire life.
