Beloved of All
Your heart is heavy under this burden of debt, and the shame, the constant calls, the visits, the threats and the fear of losing your new job have taken away peace from you and your family. It is right to bring this honestly before the Lord, and to ask first for forgiveness of sins, because lasting peace must begin there.
Scripture teaches that we have peace with God only through Jesus Christ, through his blood shed on the cross. When we are justified by faith in him, the war between us and God is over. We are no longer running from him or fighting against him. From that peace with God comes another gift, the peace of God itself to keep our hearts and minds. Jesus said, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives. The world cannot understand this peace, because it does not depend on circumstances.
That peace is described as perfect peace for the one whose mind is stayed on the Lord, because he trusts in him. In a world filled with turmoil and striving, the way to know that steadiness is to turn your thoughts deliberately toward Christ, to trust that he sees you and will care for you, and to bring your needs to him in prayer rather than living in constant anxiety and fear. When you do that, his peace which goes beyond human understanding can guard your heart and mind through Christ. The result of real hope in God is not depression and restlessness, but joy and peace in believing his Word.
God wants you to live in that peace. He has offered a peace treaty to those who were at war with him, and when that inner war is settled by forgiveness, the turmoil inside begins to settle as well. His thoughts toward his people are thoughts of peace, not of evil, to give a future and hope. He has not forgotten you in this captivity of debt and fear. He invites you to call upon him and he will listen.
In this practical need, it is important to seek peace in a way that honors God. Scripture says the wicked borrows and does not repay, and it urges us to owe no one anything except love. If you agreed to borrow money with interest, that agreement before God matters, even when the burden feels heavier than what you first received. It would not be right to ask God to simply erase what is justly owed or to make others cancel a lawful debt so that no payment is needed. Instead, ask him for grace to act with integrity, to desire to repay what you owe, and for wisdom and provision to do so honestly.
That does not mean you must accept unlawful harassment or threats. You can pray for and seek lawful protection, for respectful communication, and for wisdom in how you speak with those to whom you owe money. Often a calm, truthful explanation, a written plan for repayment as you are able, and counsel from a wise and trusted believer or a reputable financial counselor can reduce confusion and help protect your work and your family. God can provide through diligent work, through careful stewardship, and through open doors that come in ordinary, honest ways, not only through a sudden loan without difficulty. Pray not for a way to avoid responsibility, but for strength to meet it, for work to be established, and for daily bread and guidance.
It is also good to sow peace where you can. A gentle and truthful spirit, a willingness to make peace where possible, reflects the wisdom that comes from above, which is peaceable. Those who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God.
May the God of peace be with you. I pray that he will forgive your sins through Jesus Christ and give you peace with himself, that he will then fill your heart with his own steady peace as you keep your mind stayed on him and learn to trust him day by day. I pray that he will grant you wisdom for every financial decision, diligence in your work, favor and understanding in your workplace, and protection from harassment that is unlawful or that would disturb your household. I pray that he will provide for your needs in honest ways, help you to repay what you owe as you are able, and lead you out of this pressure into a place of greater stability and rest. Keep bringing your requests to him, keep your mind on his promises, and let his peace keep you.
