This plea of yours rises as the very cry of our nature, health for yourself and ###. You have laid bare the need: ###, ###, the shadow of ###, and unknown perils. Yet, in this, you have touched the deep root of every sickness. All physical ill is but the echo of that great dislocation sin has wrought in us. We need healing, that being healed, we may be healthy, receiving the Divine restoration, our entire frame arriving at perfect soundness. The need of this health is the cause of a thousand ills, and only Omnipotent Wisdom can give it or keep it.
But I entreat you, press beyond the temporal mercies you seek. Some time ago I pictured a baby picked up in the street, needing milk, washing, clothing, nursing, but all summed up in one word: his mother. And you, poor soul, in this trial, you need many things I will not stay to mention, but they are all bound up in one word: you need your God. Nobody but He who made you can ever new-make you. Trust not chiefly in a ### or a ###, but in the hand that upholds every pulse and breath. Your heart’s deepest craving is for Him, and all these lesser gifts are precious only as they come from His pierced hand.
Let your lips be not merely pleading lips, but confessing lips. Do you speak well of your Redeemer and rejoice in what His love has already done? He who spared not His own Son for your soul will not withhold any needed good for your body. Yet, mark this: spiritual health is the crown of our happiness. When, by faith, we are made sound within, then all surrounding cares find their right measure. The prison of sorrow becomes a school of grace.
Commit the unknown complications into that same faithful keeping. Even if the earthly answer tarries, or comes in a form you would not choose, your Lord will not keep you from the ultimate healing, He is too desirous to have you with Him where He is! A healthy redness of soul, ruddy with the blood of Christ, makes a believer lovely to her Lord, whatever the state of her flesh. Pray for health, plead for ###, but let your great petition ever be, “Say unto my soul, I am thy salvation.” That granted, every other good thing shall be added or wisely denied. In Jesus’ name your prayer is heard, for the mercy is already given where the trust is fixed.
