BILLS AND RENT

You cry out for rent and bills, and it is right to bring such needs before the throne of grace, for we have a helper in due season. Come boldly, then, not with an evil conscience, but trusting that He who hears in an accepted time will succor you. This is the hour of grace, while the throne is yet set for pardon and not for judgment. Do not approach later with an unseasonable plea when He has risen to judge the earth. Now is the time to find mercy for help in time of need.

Yet consider the nature of your offering. You pray for provision, but what is the purpose of your mind? God has no need of your rent money, nor does He require anything from your hands, for He made you not because He needed you. When the Philippians sent gifts, Paul did not seek the gift itself but saw it as an odor of a sweet smell, a sacrifice acceptable, well pleasing to God. It was not the coins but the heart that offered them which pleased the Lord. So do not trust in the petition alone, as if God were hungry for your bills to be paid, for He says, Will I eat the flesh of bulls, or drink the blood of goats? He seeks your faith and your gratitude.

Beware also of that unseasonable pleasure which distracts the soul. You pray for sustenance, and that is a sufficiency which can be digested. But if your mind is fattened with cares beyond what nourishes, it generates innumerable diseases of worry and distrust. Make not provision for the flesh to fulfill the lusts of anxiety. God knows you have need of these things, and He who feeds the birds will not despise your simple cry for daily bread. Stand firm in this hope and you shall have all you need and abound, filled by the hand of Him who is our true wealth.

You’re already doing the most important thing by bringing this need to the Lord, because every true cry for help acknowledges that we cannot carry these burdens alone. The world often tells us we can handle everything by our own strength, until the bills pile up and the rent comes due and that tough front starts to crack. Deep down, every one of us needs God, no matter how self-sufficient we try to appear. You are not weak for needing His provision; you are simply being honest about the reality that He is the source of every good thing.

When the pressure of finances feels overwhelming, it’s easy to think God has forgotten or that He needs us to bail Him out of some management problem. But the Scriptures remind us that He owns the cattle on a thousand hills. He is never in need. Our giving, our service, our desperate prayers for help are not about meeting some lack in Him. They are about us expressing our love and dependence on the One who has already given us everything in Christ. This moment is not a punishment; it is an invitation to trust His control. He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps, and what you need is very small compared to stopping the earth on its axis. He can handle this.

We also see in God’s law a beautiful principle: human need takes precedence. He made provision for the hungry to eat from the fields, not to hoard or sell, but to satisfy their immediate hunger. Your Father cares about your body, your shelter, your daily bread. Take heart that He is not distant from your practical struggles. Yet, while you pray for these bills, let this also be a moment to search your own heart. Sometimes prosperity causes us to drift and forget our vows, and then trouble drives us back to our knees. Let this be a response of love, not just a desperate transaction. Seek His fellowship first, and trust that He will see to it that you are taken care of, for the Lord reigns and He shall bring His work to pass if we patiently wait for Him.

Remember you are not alone in the body of Christ. When one member suffers, we all suffer. Just as the early church took up offerings for hurting believers far away, your brothers and sisters are meant to bear your burdens. Do not be too proud to share your need with those who can pray with you and offer tangible help. And in your hour of need, may you find God’s power sufficient as you learn to call upon Him and trust in Him more deeply than ever before.
