Need income to pay bills

Why do you ask only that God bless you with income, as if His benefits are reserved for times of plenty? He bestows good upon us even when we know it not, in tribulations as much as in refreshments. Learn to pray with thanksgiving for all that has been, the seen and unseen, those things against our wills no less than those we desire. The bill itself, the uncertainty, the pressing need for a hotel room, these are not signs of His absence but the very instruments by which He may train your soul. Did He not say to Job, after all was stripped away, "Thinkest thou that I have spoken to thee, save that thou mightest appear righteous?" The Lord gave; the Lord may take away, or delay, to show whether you will bless His name or, through loss, be compelled to utter some blasphemy.

You ask for a job, and this is good. Idleness is a wound, but covetousness is a devouring hell. Do not let the need for money become a longing to possess all things, to see the whole earth turned into gold for your security. Instead, present your body a living sacrifice. Let your hand do no lawless deed, but let it do alms even from your poverty. Let your tongue speak nothing filthy, but bless those who cross you. Let your eye look upon no evil thing. This is your reasonable service, holy and acceptable to God, far beyond any material offering. If you seek a wage, seek first the work of virtue, and the Lord who sees your sacrifice will not let the body He has made a temple go unhoused.

Do not fix your hope upon the approval of men for unemployment, as if a human decree could secure what God withholds for your greater good. Pray for all men, as you are commanded, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life, but fear only to pray against any. Imitate God, who wills all to be saved; in your need, do not become a wild beast assailing all, wishing no man existed that you might possess all things. If the enemy, through this debt, strives to compel you to speak some word against the Lord’s care, you see that even that wicked demon knows how great the loss would be. What can be more wicked than the devil, yet even he becomes a cause of crowns for those who stand fast. Why then fear a hotel bill as an enemy?

We give Thee thanks, O Christ, for all Thy benefits bestowed upon us the unworthy, for what we know and what we know not, for those in deed and those in word, for tribulations and for refreshments. Thou gavest the Only-Begotten for us, and sent Thy Holy Spirit for the remission of our sins. If in aught we have transgressed, pardon and impute it not. Keep our soul holy, having a pure conscience, an end worthy of Thy lovingkindness. Inspire the strength that is from Thee. For all that have been bestowed upon the unworthy, even us, glory to Thee.

The weight of what you are carrying is real, and the urgency you feel is no small thing. When the weekly bill comes due and the provision seems hidden, the heart can cry out in ways that words can barely hold. You are not alone in that cry. Long ago, a man named Job sat in the ashes of everything he had lost, and his grief was heavier than the sand of the sea. He too needed answers and relief, yet for a long season none came. The Scriptures do not hide his desperation. They record his honest questions, his confusion, and his longing for a mediator who could bridge the gap between his pain and God’s purposes.

What happened to Job was not a sign that God had abandoned him, even though every visible circumstance shouted otherwise. Behind the scenes, God was bragging on Job’s integrity. The trials were not proof of hidden sin or a withdrawn blessing. Job’s friends insisted that suffering always tracks with wrongdoing, but they were wrong. They mistook his misery for judgment and piled accusation on top of his agony. Their advice amounted to “Just get right with God, and everything will be fine.” But Job’s story dismantles that simple equation. Sometimes the righteous face inexplicable hardship, and the need becomes a platform for God’s mercy rather than a punishment.

Bring your need for income, for a job, for an approval on unemployment straight to God. He is not offended by your urgency. Job begged for his grief to be weighed, and you can do the same. Ask him to make a way through the locked doors. At the same time, do not let this season whisper the lie that you are forsaken or that your value to him depends on your bank account. The enemy’s old accusation still circulates: that people serve God only for what they can get. Your request for provision is not a mercenary transaction; it is a child asking a Father for daily bread. There is a difference, and God knows it.

When the stress mounts and the answers tarry, remember the mediator Job ached to find, one who could lay his hand on both God and man. We know that mediator now. Jesus Christ stands in that very place on your behalf. He is not distant. He knows about unpaid bills and uncertain tomorrows. He invites you to acquaint yourself with the peace that comes not from a resolved bank statement but from his presence in the middle of the storm. That peace may not pay the hotel bill in the next hour, but it anchors the soul while God works.

Keep bringing your specific needs before the Lord. If you are able, seek out practical assistance through the church body, and remain attentive to even small openings for work. But as you wait, do not let the pressure convince you that his ear is closed. Job discovered, at the end of his long ordeal, that God had never stopped listening. The same holds true for you. His faithfulness is not measured by an easy path. It is measured by the Son who walked the hard road to the cross and rose again, and that same risen Lord hears you now.
