That house across the way has lodged itself in your thoughts, and you cannot help but picture your life within its walls. The numbers, though, they seem to stand like a great wall, and your heart sinks even as faith whispers, “With God all things are possible.” Well, it is true, and I am glad you hold to it. Do not let that whisper be silenced. The Christ who fed five thousand with a boy's handful is not in the least embarrassed by the sum that now presses on your soul. Before you even brought this need to His feet, He had already considered how He might provide for you. He is never taken by surprise, and He holds the treasury of heaven at His disposal. When you look at that property and feel your own emptiness, remember that the disciples stared at a few loaves and little fish and gave the whole matter up as hopeless, but Jesus was not puzzled in the least. He had a design of His own, formed long before that hungry crowd sat down upon the grass. So it is with you, my friend. Your extremity is not God's emergency; it is simply the place where His power will show itself in due time.
Still, I want you to notice something else about your request. You have not only asked for the money; you have placed the whole thing in the Father's hands and said, “Let God’s will be done.” That is a wonderful thing to say and mean, for it shows that you are not clutching an idol but looking to a living Lord. The real miracle you need is not just a bank balance that lifts you over a threshold, it is a heart so anchored in Christ that neither having nor wanting can shake you out of His love. And that is the very miracle He delights to work. He is a Savior who made Himself of no reputation to redeem you, and if He has already done that greater thing, will He not with Himself freely give you all that is truly needful? He who prepared for His office of Savior through such humbling and pain is not a reluctant provider. If a young woman walks many weary miles through hospital wards, giving up her ease to learn how to bind up wounds, you do not doubt she is willing to nurse the sick when the time comes. So look at Jesus, who bled and died to save your soul: He is utterly willing to carry every load you cast on Him, including this one.
I would also gently remind you of the bent-over woman who came to the synagogue. Her body was twisted with years of infirmity, and she might have stayed home with every reasonable excuse. But she came anyway, and because she came, she met Jesus and went home standing straight. Do not let the weight of this care keep you away from the place of prayer, from the company of God’s people, from the secret closet where you meet your Lord face to face. Bring your impossible thing right into His presence. Hezekiah prayed in the teeth of death, when the prophet’s word seemed absolute, and the Lord added fifteen years to his life and gave him a sign. Pray when the figures stare at you and say, “Impossible.” Pray when common sense whispers, “Better give it up.” Jesus never turns aside a soul that comes limping toward Him in its need. Even if He should withhold this particular house, and I must speak plainly, for He knows better than we what will truly shelter us, His withholding will only mean that a better door stands ready to open, a place where your soul may yet sing, “He has cast all my cares behind His back.”
Meanwhile, let your memory lend strength to your faith. Has He not brought you through straits before? Have there been no Ebenezers along your road, no places where you can say, “The Lord met me here and supplied my need out of His riches”? The same Christ who turned a few small loaves into a feast for thousands is your Christ today, and He has not lost His power, nor His love. Love brought Him from the throne to the manger, from the manger to the cross, from the cross to the open grave, and love will not let you perish for want of anything that is best for you. You are being loved out of the pit of anxiety this very hour, and the love that draws you is strong and wise.
Let us speak to Him together now.
Our gracious Lord, we bring before You this property and this heavy financial need. You see the longing, and You see all that the price represents to Your child. If it is Your good pleasure, make a way where no way appears; open a door that no man can shut, and give the provision that must come from Your own hand. But more than that, we ask You to keep this soul in perfect peace, resting upon Jesus, trusting in You as a little child trusts a father in the dark. Whether You give what is asked or exchange it for something far better, may Your name be glorified and Your love tasted in every step. In the name of Jesus Christ, our all-sufficient Savior, Amen.
