We join you in this desire to honor the Lord in motherhood and to help another mother do the same, and we bring both needs before our Father together in Jesus name.
We hear your heart for being a good mother. The world often defines a good mother by outward success or by meeting every need perfectly, but Scripture shows us that a good mother is one who loves the Lord first and faithfully stewards the children He has entrusted to her. Children are a heritage of Yahweh, the fruit of the womb is his reward Ps 127:3, and that reminds us that motherhood is not a burden but a holy calling. We are called to train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it Prov 22:6, and to teach diligently as we sit in our house and walk by the way and when we lie down and when we rise up Deut 6:6-7. This is not done through harshness or provoking our children to wrath, but by nurturing them in the discipline and instruction of the Lord Eph 6:4. The portrait of a godly woman in Scripture is one who opens her mouth with wisdom, the law of kindness is on her tongue, she looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness, and her children rise up and call her blessed Prov 31:26-28. A good mother is sober minded, kind, loving toward her children and, according to God's design, loving toward her husband within the lifelong covenant of marriage between a man and a woman, that God's word may not be blasphemed Titus 2:4-5. We cannot be that woman in our own strength, we need daily grace, patience, repentance when we fail, and time in the Word and in prayer.
We also hear your burden to help a mother who is not mothering well. We want to gently correct where correction is needed. If a mother is neglectful, harsh, angry, absent, or living in a way that does not align with biblical principles, including fornication or adultery or any relationship outside of God's design for marriage, or if she is modeling immorality or selfishness before her children, that is sin and it harms both her and her children and it needs to be repented of and turned from. At the same time we are not called to condemn her or gossip about her, but to restore in a spirit of gentleness. Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness, looking to yourself so that you also are not tempted Gal 6:1. The Lord calls older women to train the younger women to love their husbands and to love their children Titus 2:4-5, so helping looks like coming alongside with humility, prayer, practical help, and truth spoken in love, not with a critical spirit. We can offer to pray with her, to share Scripture, to help with the children, to model patience, and to encourage her to seek the Lord for herself, while also protecting the children if there is abuse or serious neglect by involving appropriate help.
We notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and can be saved. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. To be a good mother we first need a new heart that only Christ can give, and to help another mother we must point her to Christ, not just to better methods. We encourage you and the other mother to confess your sins, believe that Jesus died and rose again for you, and trust Him as Lord and Savior.
We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before you in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. We thank you for the gift of children and for the calling of motherhood. We ask you to fill our sister who desires to be a good mother with your wisdom, patience, kindness, and strength. Help her to walk in your ways, to speak with wisdom and kindness, to discipline in love and not in anger, and to teach her children diligently about your truth. Forgive her where she has fallen short and renew her each morning with your mercy. We also lift up the mother who is struggling and not mothering well. Lord, have mercy on her, open her eyes to see where she needs to repent, draw her to yourself through Jesus, and give her a desire to love and nurture her children according to your Word. Give our sister grace and discernment to help her with gentleness and truth, without pride or judgment, and give her words that bring life. Protect the children involved and let them be raised in the nurture and instruction of the Lord. We ask that both homes would be centered on Christ and that any relationships would be brought into alignment with your design for marriage and family. We trust you to work in both mothers for your glory. In Jesus name we pray, amen.
We encourage you to continue in prayer, to stay in the Word daily, to seek fellowship with godly older women who can mentor you, and to keep offering help to the other mother with steady love and clear biblical truth, remembering that God is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in those who trust Him.
