Be discerning

We're told to be charitable, and help those who need it. However, here's the risk. ..sometimes those asking for something want to use money you've given them for bad intent, like drugs or alcohol. And they don't admit it. So how to know if we're not enabling their sins instead of actually helping them? A balance to be walked. "Be gentle as doves, but wise as serpents."

We understand the tension you're feeling between the biblical call to charity and the very real concern of enabling sin. This is a wise and necessary question, for Scripture does indeed call us to be both compassionate and discerning. Jesus Himself said, "Behold, I send you out as sheep in the middle of wolves. Therefore be wise as serpents, and harmless as doves." (Matthew 10:16 WEB). This balance is not always easy, but it is possible through prayer, wisdom, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.

First, let us affirm that our Lord commands us to love and help those in need. "But whoever has the world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and closes his heart of compassion against him, how does God’s love remain in him?" (1 John 3:17 WEB). Yet, we are also called to be good stewards of what God has entrusted to us, and that includes ensuring our help does not become a stumbling block for others. "Give to everyone who asks you, and don’t ask him who takes away your goods to give them back again. As you would like people to do to you, do exactly so to them." (Luke 6:30-31 WEB). However, this does not mean we are to blindly give without discernment, for even Jesus did not entrust Himself to everyone because He knew what was in their hearts (John 2:24-25 WEB).

So how do we walk this balance? Here are some biblical principles to guide us:

1. Pray for Discernment: Before giving, seek the Lord’s wisdom. "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him." (James 1:5 WEB). Ask God to reveal whether your help will truly benefit the person or enable their sin. Sometimes, the Holy Spirit will prompt us to give, and other times, He may lead us to withhold or offer help in a different way.

2. Give Wisely, Not Just Financially: Money is not always the best or only solution. "For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: 'If anyone will not work, neither let him eat.'" (2 Thessalonians 3:10 WEB). If someone is able-bodied but unwilling to work, giving them money may enable laziness or sin. Instead, consider offering food, clothing, or assistance in finding employment or rehabilitation programs. "Let him who stole steal no more; but rather let him labor, working with his hands the thing that is good, that he may have something to give to him who has need." (Ephesians 4:28 WEB).

3. Address the Root Issue: If you suspect someone is using help for sinful purposes, lovingly confront them with the truth. "Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted." (Galatians 6:1 WEB). This does not mean shaming or condemning them, but speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15 WEB). If they are struggling with addiction, encourage them to seek biblical counseling, accountability, or a Christ-centered recovery program.

4. Set Boundaries: It is not uncharitable to set boundaries with those who repeatedly misuse help. "Do not give that which is holy to the dogs, neither throw your pearls before the pigs, lest perhaps they trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces." (Matthew 7:6 WEB). If someone consistently uses your generosity for sin, it may be time to stop enabling and instead pray for their repentance and offer support in ways that do not feed their destructive habits.

5. Trust God’s Sovereignty: Ultimately, we cannot control how others use what we give, but we can trust God to work in their hearts. "So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase." (1 Corinthians 3:7 WEB). Our role is to be faithful stewards, and God will handle the rest.

Let us now come before the Lord in prayer, seeking His wisdom and guidance in this matter:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that desire to obey Your command to love and help those in need. Yet, Lord, we also recognize the reality of sin and the danger of enabling it. We ask for Your wisdom and discernment as we seek to walk the balance between charity and stewardship. Give us the courage to speak truth in love and the humility to set boundaries when necessary. Help us to see others through Your eyes, Father, and to extend grace without compromising Your truth.

Lord, we pray for those who may be struggling with addiction or destructive habits. Soften their hearts to receive Your love and the help they truly need. Surround them with godly influences and lead them to repentance and restoration. May our actions always point them to You, the ultimate source of hope and healing.

Father, we also pray for ourselves, that we would not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9 WEB). Remind us that our ultimate goal is not just to meet physical needs but to lead others to the saving knowledge of Your Son, Jesus Christ. May our generosity be a reflection of Your love and a testimony to Your grace.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who alone can transform hearts and lives. Amen.

In all things, remember that our ultimate goal is to glorify God and lead others to Christ. "Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven." (Matthew 5:16 WEB). May we be instruments of Your peace, Lord, and may our actions always reflect Your love and truth. If someone is not yet a follower of Christ, we encourage them to turn to Him, for "if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9 WEB). There is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12 WEB). Let us always point others to Jesus, for He alone can break the chains of sin and bring true transformation.

Oh, we feel the weight of this struggle so deeply, how do we love like Christ without becoming complicit in the very sins we’re called to stand against? The Spirit is whispering to us right now: discernment isn’t just about saying no, it’s about saying yes to what truly heals.

Let’s pray for eyes to see the difference between temporary relief and lasting change. When someone asks for help, we’re not just giving them money, we’re offering a glimpse of God’s heart. But we also need the courage to ask, "What would truly set them free?" Maybe that means directing them to a recovery program instead of just handing over cash. Maybe it means praying with them, not just writing a check.

And Lord, we ask for Your heart for them, the ones who might misuse our kindness. Softening their hearts is Your work, not ours. But give us the grace to speak truth in love, even when it’s hard. Let us be like the Good Samaritan, not just bandaging the wound, but ensuring they get to the inn where real healing happens.

In Jesus’ name, we trust You to show us how to walk this path. Amen.

Tough question for me too. There's no easy answer. I've given some money to ### destitute on the street who can't work. ###. And good folk. Some were ### and ###. If you're lucky 50% will be in need and the other 50% will abuse the funds. You decide if it's worth it to give or not to give.
