Backslider

We have heard your cry and we join with you in prayer before the Lord who is merciful and ready to forgive.

We thank God that you desire to return to Him, for this desire itself is the beginning of His work in you. The Scriptures teach that God shows longsuffering toward us and calls us to repentance, and that He has provided one way of salvation through Jesus Christ alone. There is no other name by which we can be restored to the Father except through faith in His Son who was crucified and risen for us.

Know that repentance is not shut against you. Though the apostle warns that some fall in a way that makes return very hard, he also says to those who have fallen that Christ can be formed in them again. Even when a person has come to the depth of wickedness, repentance has great force to set free from the burden of sins and to establish in safety the one who is in danger. The example of Manasseh shows this, who after great pollutions and many evils washed them away by repentance and consideration. So do not fall into despair, but do not remain careless either.

True repentance is more than tears or sorrow alone. Esau sought the blessing with tears but found no place of repentance because his sorrow was not the godly sorrow that works repentance unto salvation without regret. Godly sorrow brings a change of mind and life, a turning away from sin and a turning to Christ in faith. It is shown not only in feeling but in action.

Therefore we pray for you now.

Heavenly Father, we ask in the name of Jesus Christ that you would grant to this your wandering child a true and godly sorrow for sin and a complete turning to you. Grant repentance and faith unto the Lord Jesus Christ. Wash away the stains of the soul and renew a right spirit within. Deliver from the power of the devil and from every bondage and stronghold, and cause the schemes of the enemy to be exposed and to fail. We ask for your help, protection, deliverance and provision through every trial. Bring healing for both soul and body, restore health according to your will, and heal the backsliding itself. Form Christ again in this life by your Holy Spirit, and keep this one by your grace.

We encourage you to walk in the way of restoration with careful hearing of the word of God and continual recollection of it, with fortitude and with deliverance from all worldly things that hold the heart. No one part of virtue is sufficient alone, but God calls us to give ourselves wholly to Him. Come to Him daily in prayer, hear His word, turn from every known sin, and walk in fellowship with His people who can help bear your burdens. The Church is as a spiritual bath where the stains of the soul are washed by the many methods of repentance which God has given.

Even if you feel you are at the very gates of destruction, it is still possible to recover and lay hold on eternal life. God is able to restore you. Keep seeking Him while He may be found, and do not treasure up wrath by continuing without change, but receive His mercy today.

We will continue to pray that God helps, protects, delivers and provides for you, and that you will be fully restored to Him and kept by faith in Jesus Christ.

Your desire to return to the Lord is itself evidence that He is drawing you back, and He hears that cry. The Scripture speaks to those who have wandered and calls them backsliding children and says, return, for I am married to you. That is the heart of God toward you. He is not looking for a half hearted relationship, but for a whole heart turned fully to Him. When His people saw the ruin that came from turning away and still did not fear, they were held even more accountable. You have seen the cost of wandering, and now God in mercy invites you to come home. He promises that if you return, He will not keep His anger forever, for He is merciful, and He will heal your backsliding.

True return involves more than sorrow over the consequences. There is a sorrow that is of the world and it works death, and there is a godly sorrow that works repentance unto salvation. Repentance means a change, a turning away from sin and a turning to the Lord Jesus Christ in faith. It is not only saying I am sorry or shedding tears because the blessing is lost or because of pain, as one man in Scripture wept bitterly not because he had repented but because he had lost what he wanted. His tears were of anger and bitterness, not of a changed heart. In another example, a king said he was sorry yet did not change his intent. Godly sorrow is different. Like Peter when he remembered the words of Jesus, it leads to a real change of direction. John who baptized in the Jordan called people to that kind of repentance, a death to the old life and a new life begun, and he told them to bring forth fruit that shows repentance is real. The axe is laid to the root, and God looks for that fruit, not just words.

So bring your whole heart to Jesus now. Confess your sin plainly, forsake what you know is wrong, and trust Jesus Christ alone for forgiveness and life. Ask Him to give you a new direction and then walk in it, bringing forth fruit that demonstrates the change by obedience in daily choices, in thoughts, in habits, and in relationships.

You also asked for deliverance from the enemy and from every bondage and stronghold. The strongholds of the enemy are not pulled down with fleshly weapons. They are mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, to the casting down of imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and to the bringing of every thought into captivity to Christ. Prayer is a most powerful weapon He has given, along with the truth of His Word, faith, righteousness, and the other spiritual armor He provides. We will pray that every scheme of the enemy against you is exposed and fails, and that every chain is broken in Jesus name.

We pray for you now, that the Lord will help you, protect you, deliver you, and provide for you through these trials. We ask Him to heal your backsliding and to heal your body, to strengthen your health, and to restore you fully to Himself. May He increase your repentance and your faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ, and give you shepherds after His own heart who will feed you with knowledge and understanding from His Word, and lead you in the way of life. As you return to Him, trust His mercy to receive you, His power to keep you, and His grace to make you whole.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf. We are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer.

We have been continuing to lift you up before the Lord and we remember your honest confession as a backslider who desires to return to the Lord with your whole heart. We have been standing in agreement with you for your deliverance from the devil and from your enemies, that every scheme formed against you would be exposed and would fail, and that the Lord would heal your backsliding and heal your body and restore your health. We have been praying that God would help you, protect you, deliver you and provide for you through every trial you are facing, and that He would grant you true repentance and renewed faith unto the Lord Jesus Christ, and complete restoration unto Him and deliverance from every bondage and stronghold of the enemy.

We take comfort in the promises of scripture as we pray for you. We claim 1 John 1:9 that if we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, and Jeremiah 3:22 that He heals the backsliding of His people. We pray James 4:7 that as you submit yourself to God and resist the devil he will flee from you, and 2 Corinthians 10:4 that the weapons of our warfare are mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.

We pray together for you in Jesus Name. Father, we ask that You would draw our brother back to Yourself with loving kindness, forgive and cleanse him through the blood of Jesus, heal him in body and spirit, break every chain and stronghold that binds him, expose and cause to fail every scheme of the enemy, and cover him with Your protection and provision through this trial. Grant him a spirit of repentance and steadfast faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and restore him fully to fellowship with You. May he know Your mercy, Your healing and Your deliverance in a powerful way. We pray this in Jesus Name, Amen.

If your request was answered, please post a praise report and let us all know so we can rejoice with you. If your request does not seem to have been answered, please post it again as a new request and allow us to continue with you in prayer. We count it a blessing to keep standing with you.

May God bless you as you continue to seek Him through His Son, Jesus Christ.
