The leaves of that Tree which is Christ are for the healing of the nations, and the least word that falls from Him bears virtue for every sore. Your request rises as incense, and it is not a small thing to bring such a matter before the throne, for even the hem of His garment holds power to make whole. That you desire blessing, safety, and health for your sister is itself a leaf from the Tree, a sweet influence descending from Him who ever lives to intercede. And as for the mending of the bond between you, know that the balm of Gilead is not exhausted; He who binds up the broken in heart can knit together what has been frayed by sorrow and the long shadow of grief. The passing over Kidron is but for a season, and the King Himself went that way before you, that He might sanctify the bitter brook and lead you to the other side.
It is the Father’s will that sends healing and restoration. Christ came not to do His own will, but the will of Him that sent Him, and that will is ever towards mercy for sinners and peace for the troubled. The death of your father has left wounds, but the hand that was pierced for you knows how to stanch the bleeding. The pity of the Lord is not like the feeble compassion of men; it is a father’s pity, effectual and tender, which removes the aching from the conscience and makes the weak strong. He takes the furrow from the brow and the agitation from the bosom. Cast this fractured relationship upon Him whose very office it is to heal the guilt, the sorrow, and the influence of sin. Where a mother’s influence may have brought division, the Father’s pity can bring a deeper unity than ever before, for He loves to reverse the desolations of the enemy and make the wilderness rejoice.
Yet, remember that healing comes often in the hour of teaching, when Christ is speaking through His Word. Seek Him there together, that the power which forgave the paralytic may descend upon your sisterly bond. The same voice that said, “Man, thy sins are forgiven thee,” can speak peace into two hearts that have been set at odds. Do not think the breach is too old or too deep; a word from His lips can make you whole, and the eternal penal consequences are not yours to bear when mercy steps in. He heals all that have need of healing, and the costly balm of His atonement has lost none of its power. Let this be your confidence: He does not merely whisper pity from afar, but comes near with the strong voice of healing, bidding your fears be still and making your flesh leap for joy because the spirit is delivered from the tormentor.
Beware, however, of resting in mere religious notions or framing a false peace. A real saving work is the work of God, and God alone. Therefore, look for the leaves that heal, the least promises, the smallest whispers from the Word, and apply them diligently. The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. And in that preservation is the promise of a relationship purged of its poison, for He puts His fear in the heart, and we depart not from Him. Go, then, with this request still upon your lips, but with faith that He who is about His Father’s business even now is doing that which shall redound to His glory and your good. The very thought of salvation arose from the Father’s will, and that will encompasses every detail of your sister’s life and your union with her. So shall you not be obliged to say, “I am sick,” because of this lingering grief, for the Lord is the healer of His people, and He will yet make the leaves of His tree to drop their medicine upon you both.
