The Publican’s Prayer
For Christ’s Sake
The Sin-Offering for the Common People
We hear your heart and we are standing with you and your son in prayer today, and we understand the weight of anxiety and guilt you are feeling after sinning and messing up. We want to remind you that our God is full of compassion and mercy, and He sees not only what you did but also your heart that is turning back to Him and trying to walk faithfully.

Scripture tells us If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9. And As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. Psalm 103:12. When we come to Him in true repentance, He does not hold our sin against us, for There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. Romans 8:1. His mercies are new every morning, for Yahweh's loving kindnesses indeed never cease, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22-23.

We also want to gently correct the fear that God would punish your son for your sin. The word of God is clear that The soul who sins, he shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father. Ezekiel 18:20. God does not punish children for their parents failures. He is just and merciful, and He deals with each of us individually with grace. He also does not abandon His purpose for you because of one stumble. We know that For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 and We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28. You have not ruined His plan. His plan is bigger than our failures, and when we repent He restores and continues to build our lives for His glory.

Your anxiety about whether He is still with you is something many of us feel, but His promise is Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. Isaiah 41:10 and He himself has said, I will in no way leave you, neither will I in any way forsake you. Hebrews 13:5. He is near to those who are brokenhearted, and He sees that you are trying. Yahweh doesn't see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but Yahweh looks at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7. Yet we are not saved by trying alone, but by grace through faith in Jesus Christ.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and receive forgiveness and peace. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. If you have not already, place your trust fully in Jesus, confess your sin to Him, believe that He died and rose again for you, and you will have assurance of forgiveness and eternal life. That is the foundation for the peace you are seeking.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ for this dear mother and her son. We confess her sin before You and ask for Your complete forgiveness and cleansing. Let her know that she is forgiven and that there is no condemnation in Christ. Take away the fear that You will punish her or her son, and replace it with Your perfect peace. We ask that You guard her heart and mind just as You promised, In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. Lord, reassure her that You have not left her, that You see her heart, and that Your plan and purpose for her and her son still stands. Build for them a beautiful and better life according to Your will, provide for every need, and send godly helpers and community to support and encourage them. Strengthen her to walk in obedience day by day and to rest in Your grace and mercy. In Jesus name we pray, amen.

Be encouraged and keep turning to Him daily in prayer and in His word. He is still here, He still loves you and your son deeply, and His grace is sufficient for you.

We hear how heavy today has felt for you, and how much you love your son. Wanting to know that God still sees you, still stays close, and hasn't turned away after a hard day is such an honest and tender prayer. We want you to know we are carrying you both before the Lord.

It makes sense that anxiety would spike after you feel you have failed. When we stumble, fear can quickly tell us that we have ruined everything or that punishment is coming, especially when we are trying so hard as a parent. God is not watching for a reason to pull His grace back. He sees your heart, that you are trying, that you care deeply about walking with Him and giving your son a good life. His purposes for you are not so fragile that one difficult day can undo them.

When those worried thoughts come, it can help to bring them to God plainly and quickly, rather than carrying them alone through the night. Tonight, if you can, find a quiet moment to tell Him simply what happened, ask for His mercy and help for tomorrow, and then let yourself rest in His care. This week it may also help to share how you are feeling with one trusted person, a pastor or a mature friend, who can pray with you face to face and encourage you.

Father, we lift this dear mom and her son to You. Cover them with Your grace, mercy and peace tonight. Quiet her fear that You will punish them, remind her that You are near and see her heart, and give her strength to keep taking the next faithful step. Lead her to the help she needs and guide both of their lives according to Your good will. In Jesus' name, amen.

The fear and heaviness you describe is not hidden from the Lord, and He hears the cry of a heart that confesses its sin and longs for mercy. Fear is always distressing and weakening, and fear concerning the guilt of past sin is the most bitter of all, yet Scripture gives a better word, What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.

Be assured of this, there is forgiveness with God. We may abolish the mercy seat itself and burn this blessed Bible if there were no forgiveness, but there is forgiveness, and it is to be found only through Jesus Christ our Lord. Out of free favour He has provided in the death of His dear Son an atonement by which His mercy can be justly bestowed. By grace are ye saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Grace is not a reason to sin, but the very power that saves from sin and teaches us to say, God forbid, to continuing in it. Divine grace is omnipotent and immortal, and where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.

The Lord knew your sin before you committed it. He is infinite in knowledge and everywhere present, and nothing is hidden from His eyes. Do not think this truth is meant to crush you, for the same God who saw your folly from eternity chose in sovereign grace to set His love upon sinners and to make a covenant of grace. He knew all your sinfulness and yet His purpose in Christ stands. You have not ruined His plan for you and for your son. His gracious purpose is more than a match for your sin, for it brings to bear the blood of the Incarnate Son and the work of the Spirit who cleanses and renews.

And when He pardons, He pardons completely. He says, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins. He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. A bruised reed shall He not break, and the smoking flax shall He not quench. His mercy is tender in its requirements, for the gospel asks only that you come with a broken and contrite heart, confessing your sin, and trusting wholly in Christ. The fear of the Lord that follows forgiveness is not a dread and horror, but a holy reverence and awe, the beginning of wisdom, which keeps us near to Him.

He does indeed see your heart and knows that you are trying, and He also sees your need of His grace to do more than try. He invites you to hope in His mercy, for those who fear Him are the same as those who hope in His mercy, and such hope is a sure sign of His work in you.

Let us pray for you and for your son.

O Lord, tender and merciful Father, look upon this weary one who confesses sin and fears Thy punishment. For the sake of Jesus Christ, who bore sin upon the cross, grant full and free forgiveness, and let grace and peace be multiplied to her and to her son. Take away distressing fear and give trusting faith. Lift the burden of guilt and give the joy of sins remembered no more. Keep Thy gracious purpose for their lives, for Thou art not turned aside by our weakness. Build for them a life that is grounded in Christ, provide help in time of need, and send helpers according to Thy wisdom and love, that they may walk in holiness and hope. Keep them near under the shadow of Thy wings, and let them know Thou art still with them, seeing, hearing, and keeping them. Lead them in Thy path and make them to know the abundance of Thy mercy. In the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour, Amen.
