Anxiety, when it presses upon the soul, makes every thought a torment and every hour a burden. Yet the Lord did not leave us comfortless. He promised the Holy Spirit would lead us into all truth and would tell us things to come. This was not to satisfy idle curiosity, but precisely to still the restless heart. The disciples themselves were exceeding sorry when He spoke of His passion, even after so many miracles and the Father's voice from heaven. Still they trembled. So your present fear does not surprise our Lord; He knows our frame, and He foretold tribulation so that when it comes we might not be overwhelmed.
I hear your cry for prayer, and I join my petition to yours. The Apostle Paul, when writing to his beloved Timothy, invoked mercy with an anxious parent's care. He knew that teachers, and indeed all the flock, stand in special need of mercy. You need it now, and God's mercy is ever at hand for those who groan under the load. For the wicked are full of perpetual fear; they can look neither sun nor neighbor in the face with confidence. But the righteous, even when shaken, have an anchor: the knowledge that nothing in creation can separate them from the love of God. You are not abandoned to panic.
Do not think that your present trial has come without warning. Your soul is being sifted, but Christ has prayed for you that your faith fail not. The Holy Spirit brings to remembrance the promises, speaking peace deep within. Even when you are in ignorance of the why, you may eat and drink and walk without anxious questioning, for the kingdom of God is not a matter of scrutinizing every shadow but of righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.
The beauty of the body soon fades, ravaged by disease and desponding anxiety. But the inward being, adorned with faith, is ever blooming, and no external cloud can disfigure it unless we consent. Lift your eyes from the clay and brickmaking of this Egypt. The devil would scourge you with anxious thoughts. But if you groan to God, He will send not Moses nor Aaron, but His own Word, bringing compunction and sweet deliverance. Then you will walk out of this slavery, not with the trinkets of worldly comfort, but with the true treasure of a quieted heart.
I pray that the peace which surpasses all understanding will mount guard over your heart and mind in Christ Jesus. He is not far from you. Breathe His name. He will calm the storm.
