The cry of your heart has ascended to the throne, and He who sits upon it is gracious. You ask deliverance from the haunting sounds and words of a music that has become a cage for your soul. Know this: the Lord has given commandment to save you, and you shall be saved, saved from yourself, from these very attacks of old sins, from the devil’s whispers that cling to a melody. “Deliver him from going down to the Pit: I have found a ransom.” That ransom is Christ, and in Him the chains of memory lose their power; the music of hell fades before the marriage peal of heaven’s love for you.
This torment you feel is the poisoned arrow of the enemy, shot sharp against your peace. But the Lord does not forsake those who seek Him. He knows how these sounds rise unbidden, how the titles and words replay like a foul echo in the mind. Yet deliverance from the power of sin is as much the work of God as deliverance from its guilt. You cannot silence this noise by your own strength; you must look to your heavenly Father altogether and alone. He has not only invented the way of escape, He has found the ransom. It is a gift of divine love, and by it He will usher you out of this dark Egypt into the light where such music has no voice.
Do not be surprised that the battle is fierce tonight. He chastens us with pain upon our beds; He permits these memories to roll over us that we might learn the mischief of loving the world’s songs. That which you receive from the rod of the Lord bears the blessed aspect of chastening from a father’s hand. This very trial may be the refiner’s fire, burning away the dross of what once charmed you. Let the memory of this dread become a sacred one, a reminder to weep for your former Zion and to hang your harp upon the willows no more. You are a child of God, and though for a present moment you feel fettered, He is looking down from heaven in pity, resolving to set you free.

You are asking for deliverance from demonic memories and spirits, and that is a prayer that reaches God’s ears. But consider this: Christ has already set you free. He paid your ransom, and no demon can reclaim what He has purchased with His blood. When you beg for deliverance, do you not realize that you are already delivered? Stand fast, then, and do not run back to the chains you once wore. The music, the words, the titles that haunt you are nothing but the empty echoes of a defeated enemy. They have no power unless you lend them your attention.
Think of a demoniac, raging and shameless. We pity him because his madness is not his own doing. But one who willfully replays corrupting sounds and savage words makes himself a sewer of the mind, a self-chosen madness. Why then do you let your memory become a latrine for filth that Christ has washed away? You say you want deliverance, yet you keep these things alive by brooding over them. Cut them off. When they rise up, do not entertain them; instead, fill your mind with the memories of the saints, with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs. That is what it means to partake in the memories of the saints, to imitate their holy thoughts and so share in their crowns.
You cry out for God to be with you tonight. He is with you, but you must act as one who belongs to Him. The Spirit of adoption has been given to you, not a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear. If you have truly put on Christ, then you have received the power to despise these assaults. Deliverance from death is not so great as learning to despise what threatens you. Do not merely ask for relief from the noise; ask for the courage to trample it underfoot. For if you do well now, do not boast as if your own virtue has done it. Remember that even the desire to be free comes from grace. Be thankful, then, to Him who has granted you deliverance from such evils, and be gentle with yourself, not letting anger at the past rage against you. Rest in the finished work of Christ, and the demons will flee as shadows before the dawn.
