We hear your deep concern and fear regarding snakes, and we understand that these creatures can represent danger and evil in the spiritual sense as well. The Bible does speak of the serpent as a symbol of Satan and sin, beginning in the Garden of Eden. In Genesis 3:14-15, God says to the serpent, "Because you have done this, you are cursed above all livestock, and above every animal of the field. You shall go on your belly and you shall eat dust all the days of your life. I will put hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will bruise your head, and you will bruise his heel."
While we share your desire for protection from harm and evil, we must also remember that all of God's creation has a purpose, even snakes. In the natural world, they play a role in the ecosystem, and in the spiritual realm, they remind us of the reality of evil and the need for vigilance. Instead of praying for their extinction, let us pray for God's protection and wisdom to navigate the world safely, both physically and spiritually.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We ask for Your divine protection over us and our loved ones from all harm, including the dangers that snakes may represent. Lord, we know that You have power over all creation, and we trust in Your ability to keep us safe.
Father, we also pray for spiritual protection. Just as the serpent deceived Eve in the Garden, we know that the enemy seeks to deceive and harm us. We ask for Your wisdom and discernment to recognize his schemes and for the strength to resist temptation. Help us to stand firm in our faith, clothed in Your armor, as described in Ephesians 6:10-18.
Lord, we rebuke any fear or anxiety in our hearts regarding snakes or any other danger. We know that perfect love casts out fear (1 John 4:18), and Your love for us is perfect. Fill us with Your peace that surpasses all understanding, guarding our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
We also pray for those who may be struggling with fear or phobias. Grant them Your comfort and healing, and help them to trust in Your protection. Remind us all that You are our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

The fear of the serpent is an ancient dread, but to pray for the utter extinction of any creature is to set your sights too low and to misunderstand the nature of deliverance. We must labor to get rid of fear, for fear is weakening and dishonors God. Doubt the Eternal, distrust the Omnipotent? Traitorous fear! Thinkest thou that the arm which piled the heavens and sustains the pillars of the earth shall ever be palsied against a creeping thing? “Fear not, thou worm Jacob; I will help thee, saith the Lord.” Then why shouldst thou fear?
The genuine Christian who has once come to fear God, fears nobody else, and nothing else. He scorns to hamper himself with the sinful customs which sway the slavish hordes of mankind. He is above the molestation of mankind, and of beasts, for his life is hidden with Christ; his conversation is in heaven; he is free from fear, since he has nothing to fear. All his interests are secure. Has He delivered us from the power of darkness? Then He will certainly help us in our daily troubles. Did He give His own dear Son to put away our sin, and will He not give us bread and water, and protection from that which slithers?
Instead of crying for destruction, cry for deliverance from the fear that binds you. If thou art at the mercy-seat, God is there too. God loves the mercy-seat better than thou dost. He has invented a way of deliverance, and found a ransom. Do not doubt your deliverance, for God has said it, "I have found a ransom." When the Lamb is slain, the destroyer’s power is broken, not by smiting every external terror, but by freeing the soul from its iron furnace of fear. Sin, which was once our Goshen of pleasure, becomes our iron furnace of fear; we sigh by reason of sore bondage, but He brought them forth. He makes their deliverance effectual.
If we had no troubles, we would all have less to declare. We were frozen with fear, but the Lord’s face shone in and we cried, “God is the Lord, which has showed us light.” I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the Lord. Declare His care over you in the presence of that which you dread, rather than seeking the annihilation of His creatures. God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. Fear not!

You ask for the complete wiping out and extinction of a living creature, and this request comes from a place of deep fear. That terror is a real affliction, and the desire to be free from what causes such dread is a natural one. But consider this: to demand that God erase a part of His creation because it frightens you is to demand a specific sign of deliverance on your own terms. This is a dangerous path. For a person to throw themselves upon a demand, saying "Let us see whether God will grant this extinction," is akin to the temptation of Christ, “Cast Thyself down,” to see if He will save you. It is a diabolical thing to test God by prescribing the exact shape your rescue must take, leaping into a demand without cause and for no purpose.
When the disciples were on the sea in a storm, Christ did not appear at once or in the way they expected. He waited until the fourth watch of the night, instructing them not hastily to seek for deliverance from pressing dangers in their own manner, but to bear all occurrences manfully. Your plea rises from a fear that, while very real, is a common human affliction. “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man.” The part of a philosopher, a true citizen of heaven, is not to pray for the annihilation of what God has made, but to pray for the strength to bear what frightens us. If we cannot bear this common fear, how would we endure a true trial where we must resist unto blood?
The life of the just is not woven from one kind of thread. God, who is full of love for mankind, does not make dangers or refreshments continual. He interweaves both. See in the infancy of Christ the pattern: the fear of Herod seeking the young Child’s life drove the holy family to flee. Flight itself was an act of faith, a prudent withdrawal from a foreseen danger. They did not demand the legions of angels to wipe out every threat. You have not yet seen a danger threatening death, yet you pray for an extinction, a final solution of slaughter. This is not the prayer of one putting on the whole armor of God to withstand in the evil day. This is a prayer to banish all fear by erasing the object of fear, but true freedom from fear comes not from a world emptied of peril, but from a soul trusting in God.
What then should you do? Do not challenge trials by demanding a miracle in the shape you prescribe. There is no necessity, no cause for godliness, that calls you to pray for the erasure of a creature. If you find the things that concern godliness prospering, why draw down needless demands which bring no gain? Instead of praying for the death of a serpent, pray for a heart delivered from trembling, hatred, and this incurable terror. The real pleasure is freedom from care and fear and despondency, which is the state of the just man who trusts in Providence. Pray for that freedom, for courage to act prudently and not rashly. The creature you curse was made by God, and its existence does not threaten your soul. Your terror does. Offer that terror to God and ask Him to transform it into trust. That is the prayer of a citizen of heaven, not a demand for extinction, which is the cry of one who has not yet learned to endure as seeing Him who is Invisible.

I can hear the deep anxiety behind this request. When something terrifies us, it is easy to want it simply erased from the earth. But the true beginning of wisdom is not the removal of everything that frightens us; it is the fear of the Lord. That reverential awe, that settled recognition of who God is, reorders every other fear in our lives.
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil. It anchors the soul in His power and His goodness. When we are consumed by fear of a creature, it often means we have temporarily lost sight of the Creator. Remembering the Lord is the cure for fear. He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and a sound mind. Whenever we forget His presence, fear rushes in to fill the vacuum. But when we are conscious that He is with us, the grip of terror loosens. As David said, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me.”
Faith and fear cannot occupy the same heart at the same time. One will always drive out the other. If we allow fear to set the agenda, we will be tempted to pray amiss, reacting rather than resting in God’s protection. The Lord is your light and your salvation; whom shall you fear? He is the strength of your life; of whom shall you be afraid? In times of trouble, He hides us in the shelter of His presence.
I am not dismissing the very real dread these creatures cause you. But I want to encourage you not to let that dread become your motivator. Do what is wise and prudent to avoid danger in the area where you live, but do not let fear dictate your prayer for the utter extinction of something God has made. Instead, ask Him to give you a fresh awareness of His nearness. Ask Him to build such a confidence in His care that the very thing that now causes your heart to race becomes an occasion to remember His sovereignty.
God knows how to deliver His own. He kept Lot until the moment judgment fell, and He keeps you now. The heritage of those who fear His name is deliverance, not necessarily the elimination of every earthly discomfort. May you find that secret place of the Most High, where His truth becomes your shield and the terror subsides because you know you are safely held.
