We hear your concern about snakes and the fear they may evoke, and we join you in bringing this request before our Heavenly Father. While we understand the discomfort or danger some snakes may pose, we must also remember that all of God’s creation has purpose, even creatures that may seem frightening or harmful to us. In Genesis 1:31, it is written, "God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good." This includes the creatures of the earth, which God designed with wisdom and intention.

However, we also recognize that the world is fallen, and some things bring harm or fear due to sin’s entrance into creation. We can pray for protection from danger and for wisdom in how to live in harmony with God’s creation. The Lord has given us dominion over the earth (Genesis 1:28), and with that comes the responsibility to steward it wisely, not to eradicate what He has made.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts that seek Your will and Your wisdom. We ask for Your protection from harm, including the dangers that some creatures may pose. Lord, we pray for those who live in fear of snakes or who have been harmed by them. Grant them peace, courage, and wisdom to navigate the world You have created. Help us to see Your hand in all things, even in creatures that may seem frightening or difficult to understand. Teach us to trust in Your sovereignty and to honor the life You have given to all of Your creation. We ask for Your guidance in how to live in harmony with the earth and its creatures, using wisdom and discernment in all things. In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.

We also encourage you to reflect on the beauty and purpose in God’s creation, even in things that may challenge us. The Lord uses all things for His glory, and even the serpent in the Garden of Eden served a purpose in the story of redemption. Let us trust in His plan and seek His peace in all circumstances. If fear is a struggle for you, we invite you to meditate on Scriptures that remind us of God’s protection, such as Psalm 91:13, "You will tread on the lion and cobra. You will trample the young lion and the serpent underfoot." May you find comfort in His promises.

Thank you for pouring your heart out to God like this, we can hear how much fear and distress those creatures stir up in you, and we don't take that lightly. It's okay to bring even the most desperate-sounding prayers to the Lord; He can handle our rawest cries.

Fear often paints threats larger than they really are, especially when it has taken root over time. While God created snakes as part of His world, He also cares deeply about the terror that grips you. You are not alone in this, countless people wrestle with deep-seated fears, and freedom is possible. If this dread follows you into your everyday life, making it hard to enjoy the outdoors or to find rest, we'd gently encourage you to speak with a wise Christian counselor or therapist. They can walk with you through gradual, proven steps that help your mind and body learn a different, calmer response. You don't have to battle this alone.

In the meantime, we are praying for you to feel God's steady presence right in the middle of your fear, that His perfect care surrounds you even when your heart is racing. We ask Him to build courage in you, to guard your mind with His peace, and to break the power this fear holds over you. Thank You, Father, for seeing this dear one's struggle and for meeting them with compassion. Quiet their anxious thoughts, send wise helpers alongside, and grant them tangible moments of relief that point to Your loving protection. In Jesus' name. Amen.

Alas, that a prayer should ascend to the throne of grace seeking the absolute extinction of any creature which the Lord God has made! Did not the Almighty, when He formed the earth and all that therein is, behold every living thing and pronounce it good? The serpent, though now crawling upon its belly by divine decree, fulfills the secret purpose of its Maker in the great tapestry of creation. To pray for its annihilation is not the fruit of faith, but the bitter grape of fear; and such fear dishonors God.

Have you forgotten the precept which rings through Scripture like a silver trumpet, ‘Fear not’? It is an absolute command, unbounded and unqualified, we are not to fear at all. Doubt the Eternal, distrust the Omnipotent? O traitorous fear, to suppose that He who piled the heavens and sustains the pillars of the earth cannot shield a poor worm of the dust from a creeping thing!

If a reptile sends your heart quivering, how shall you face the fiercer trials appointed for the proving of your faith? Did not our Lord give His disciples authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy? Then why should the child of God be afraid? Rather pray, ‘Lord, increase my faith; cast out this slavish fear, and let me rest in the shadow of Thy wings.’ For the fear of a creature which has neither part nor lot in the Covenant of Grace is a snare, and brings weakness into the soul.

Seek not the extinction of the snake, but the extinction of your unbelief; and cry instead, ‘I will trust, and not be afraid, for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; He also has become my salvation.’ Fear not; He will help you. Let this fear be slain by perfect love, and let a holy, childlike confidence in the living God possess your spirit.

To pray for the extinction of an entire creature which God has made is a dangerous thing. Consider what you are asking. The same Lord who formed man from the dust also formed the creeping things of the earth, and He saw that it was good. Shall we then instruct the Creator to uncreate? This is not the mind of the saints but of impatient children who cry out against every discomfort.

Scripture itself does not treat the serpent so simply. Yes, the serpent was cursed in Eden, yet God did not blot it out of existence. He left it as a perpetual reminder of the fall and of His own justice. Later, when fiery serpents bit the disobedient Israelites, God did not make them extinct but commanded Moses to lift up a bronze serpent, and those who looked upon it were healed. Our Lord Himself took up that very image and applied it to His own lifting up on the cross for the salvation of the world. And did He not also command His disciples to be wise as serpents, taking something admirable even from that lowly creature?

When you ask for all snakes to be destroyed, you are asking to be delivered from a fear, not from a sin. But God does not always promise deliverance from what troubles the flesh. He grants something far greater: the strength to despise fear, to bear what He permits manfully, and to trust His providence in all things. To seek the removal of every danger and every cause of trembling is not faith but softness. The devil tempts men to demand that God prove His care by removing every hardship. But the just man is delivered from fear itself, not merely from the thing feared.

If your conscience accuses you of terror at the sight of a snake, then pray for courage, pray for a steadfast heart, pray that you may say with the Psalmist, "I will not fear what flesh can do to me." But do not pray for the destruction of what God in His wisdom has made and sustained through all the ages. That is to make your own comfort the measure of creation, and it is a prayer offered in the spirit of cowardice, not of faith.

Bear what He permits. Trust His ordering of the world. The snake has its place, and you have yours. Seek rather to overcome your fear through Christ who strengthens you, for He has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and love and self-control.

There is honest fear behind that prayer, and it’s a fear the Father understands. Your cry reached His ear the moment it left your heart. That’s the kind of God He is, close, attentive, a Father who wants you to run to Him in trouble and simply say, “Dad, I need help.”

But notice what you asked for: the total elimination of something He made. The Egyptians worshipped the snake, yet God never told Moses, “Pray that I wipe out every serpent.” When Aaron’s rod became a serpent before Pharaoh, it wasn’t destroyed; it swallowed up the magicians’ counterfeits. God showed His power over the thing that held people in bondage, but He didn’t annihilate the creature itself. Our deepest need is rarely the removal of the scary object. Our deepest need is deliverance from the fear that grips our own hearts.

Sometimes the prayer for a quick fix is just that, a plea to escape the pressure without truly wanting the Lord. Pharaoh begged for prayer when the plagues hit, but he had no fear of God and wouldn’t submit to His lordship. He wanted the calamity gone; he didn’t want the God who sent it. Let your prayer go deeper. Ask instead that the fear itself be conquered, that you would find the peace that passes understanding even while snakes still exist.

Your Father’s arm is mighty. The same God who parted the sea told Israel, “Fear not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord.” He didn’t remove the Egyptian army or the wilderness; He brought His people through them. He can do the same for you. The only lasting protection, the true passing over of terror, comes through the blood of Jesus and a heart that trusts Him completely.

Let’s bring that before Him now: “Father, you see this fear, and you know how real it is. I’m not going to ask you to destroy what you have made, but I do ask you to silence the dread in my heart. Let your perfect love cast out this fear. Be my refuge, my safe place, so that I’m not enslaved by panic. In Jesus’ name, amen.”
