What a mercy it is that the Lord puts such prayers into the hearts of His people! Here is a soul crying out for the salvation of many, and that is no small thing, for it is God who writes intercession upon men’s hearts. You have pleaded for children, for four souls, for a child, for a woman, and for all connected with them, and you have done well to lay these requests before the throne of grace. But remember, the only place of salvation is in Christ Jesus alone. Look to Him for these precious ones, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby they must be saved. Pray on, and let your intercession be mingled with tears and with a holy determination to speak to them, too, for all men are approachable at some time or in some way, and if you desire their salvation, you must tell them the way of life.
Yet, in your zeal for others, do not neglect your own soul. Your own salvation is a matter of infinite moment, nothing on earth can match it, for what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? The way is simple: “Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth.” Faith in Christ secures a salvation that is divine in its planning, free as the air you breathe, and irreversible once bestowed. Come, then, poor sinner, if you yourself have never fled to Jesus, come now, with nothing but your emptiness, for it is without money and without price. If you bring your own supposed goodness, you cannot have it; but if you come empty-handed, He will fill you with His pardoning grace.
Concerning the little children, your prayers are fragrant before God. We have every scriptural warrant to believe that He saves infants in the same way as adults, through the blood of the everlasting covenant, all of grace. Where parents are praying, where the Word is spoken, the Lord often works early, that out of the mouths of babes and sucklings He might perfect praise. Persevere in your intercessions, and look with confident hope to see those sixteen children and the others you have named brought into the fold. And as for the disease and the lettuce, our Father cares for the trifles as well as the great needs, so cast that care upon Him too, for He heareth prayer.
Above all, see that your prayers rest not upon your own earnestness but upon the intercession of Jesus at the Father’s right hand. The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities, making intercession for the saints according to the will of God. So be encouraged, dear praying one; the arm of the Lord is not shortened that it cannot save. Plead the blood, plead the promise, and wait in hope, giving glory to God for such a rich salvation as this.
