A heart that pleads for beasts and drivers and needy souls is not far from the kingdom. You lift them before the mercy seat, and that is well, for the creature groans under the bondage of corruption, and men rush headlong on the road to destruction. But know this: the peace you crave for animals and roads and souls flows only from one fountain. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, peace that can tame the lion and the driver’s reckless haste, peace that stills the surging sorrows of those in need. And this peace is a living person; He Himself is our salvation.
You cry, “Save them if they be in need of salvation.” Oh, they are in need, every one! The whole earth stands condemned in Adam, and the wrath of God abides on every soul that has not fled to Christ. But the way of salvation is wide as the ends of the earth, and simple as a look. “Look unto me, and be ye saved,” says the Lord. It is not climb, nor labor, nor pay, but look, a glance of faith upon the crucified Substitute. Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed. This is God’s salvation, planned in infinite wisdom, bought with precious blood, and offered freely without money and without price. The river of the water of life flows at your feet; do not, as so many do, die of thirst with the flood streaming by.
And as you intercede for drivers and the perishing, plead also for yourself, that you be not deceived by a false peace. True salvation is salvation from sin, the breaking of its power, the cleansing of its stain. If any man be in Christ, old things are passed away. Let no one rest until he knows this emancipation, for what shall it profit a man to gain the whole world and lose his own soul?
Then live out this salvation in your home. Let your household see it, that your children and servants may be won by the holy habit of grace. Gather them, pray with them, point them to the Savior. I have seen lads banding together to seek a playmate’s conversion; oh, what a trophy when your own dear ones are born of God! Continue to carry sinners to the throne, and while you carry them, make sure you have carried them in your own heart by earnest, word-wise witness. The most astonishing thing is that God has put this treasure in earthen vessels, that we might be rivers of water in a dry place. Pour out, then, the living truth, and trust the Lord to make the desert rejoice and blossom as the rose.

You pray for animals and for drivers, and it is a merciful thing to desire that all creatures live without conflict and that travelers be kept safe. Yet consider what it is that secures true peace for the world. It was not by the taming of beasts nor by the carefulness of charioteers that the earth was turned from error, but by the cross. For this cross saved and converted the world, drove away error, brought back truth, made earth heaven, fashioned men into angels. Because of this, all that wars against us is cast to the ground and trodden under foot.
When you ask that those in need be saved, you touch the one thing necessary. But know that the salvation you beseech is not a mere passing safety on the road, nor a harmony among the brute creation, but a deliverance from the death that perishes not. The soul torn from the body does not wander here, nor can it be helped by any after our departing if it has not laid hold of life while breath remains. Therefore, while you pray for others, take heed that you yourself are not asleep. It is a good thing to enjoy the prayer of the saints, but only when we ourselves are on the alert. Do not say, What need have I of prayer? On this account you need it, because you think you have no need. Yea, though you become as Paul, you have need of prayer. Do not exalt yourself, lest you be humbled.
You see all flesh across the planet, and you desire help for them. Good. But look with the eyes of the mind, and behold the harvest. The fields are already white for the reaping; the multitude of souls is prepared for the reception of the preaching. The true help, the great salvation, is that all flesh should see the salvation of God, no longer Jews and proselytes only, but the whole race of men, every crooked thing made straight, every rough way made smooth, not by toils and labors, but by grace and the forgiveness of sins.
Therefore let your prayer rise to this: that the light of the gospel would break in upon those perishing in their souls, who often account wholesome meat unpleasant and consider those who care for their salvation to be troublesome. It is the disease that makes them not know their best friends. For them we ought to weep, even as we pray, and more than for any earthly loss. And if you would truly desire the peace of the world, labor that the truth of Christ would run swiftly and be glorified, for only when hearts are subdued to the obedience of faith will drivers rule their passions and all creatures find their place under the feet of the One who alone can bring peace.
