Chrysostom
Beloved of All
A friend who prays truly is a friend indeed, one who seeks the good of another as for his own soul. Hold fast to this mind, and let importunity be your commendation before God. For the Lord Himself taught us, by the widow who wore down the ruthless judge and by the friend who roused his neighbor at midnight, that it is not long phrases but a heart on fire with love and persistence that draws forth mercy. Come, then, not with ten thousand words, but with the cry of faith: let your love for your friend’s ankle be such that you would sooner see the sun extinguished than leave off your prayer.
And take courage, for the High Priest you approach is no mortal who dies and needs a successor. He ever lives to make intercession for those who come to God through Him. He is able to save to the uttermost; His power is not exhausted, His compassion does not grow weary. In His humanity He knows our frailties, and in His divinity He commands all healing. Speak, then, to Him as to the truest Friend, the one who gave Himself for us when we were yet enemies. If an earthly friend can move us to tears by his presence, how much more shall Christ, who has left the grace of His own light on every place of our need?
Let all human fears be laughed to scorn so long as God is favorable. When He is our friend, though the whole creation war against us, there is no harm. I will not fear what man shall do unto me, nor what pain the body may threaten. Stand, then, in this confidence: pray first for your friend’s healing, even before your own petitions, for this is the mark of spiritual friendship that Paul showed when he wished himself accursed for his brethren’s sake. Lay hold of heaven with such love, and you shall not be disappointed. Christ will stretch out His hand.
