Anger

We join with you in bringing this struggle with anger before the Lord, and we thank you for calling on the high name of Jesus, for it is through Him alone that we have access to the Father and find victory.

We understand how strong and persistent anger can feel, even when we long for calm. Scripture speaks directly to this battle. Be angry, and don’t sin. Don’t let the sun go down on your wrath, neither give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:26-27. Anger itself can rise quickly in our hearts, but we are called not to let it rule us or lead us into sin, and not to hold onto it and give the enemy a foothold.

The Word also shows us the better way, So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger; for the anger of man doesn’t produce the righteousness of God. James 1:19-20. And He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, he who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city. Proverbs 16:32. God does not want us to be controlled by outbursts or by simmering resentment, but to be ruled by His Spirit. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Galatians 5:22-23. True calm and victory over anger will not come from our own willpower alone, but from the Holy Spirit producing self-control within us as we walk with Him. We are told, But now you also put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and shameful speaking out of your mouth. Colossians 3:8.

We encourage you to bring your anger to God the moment you feel it rising, confessing it honestly and asking for His help to respond with gentleness. Memorizing and meditating on His Word, pausing to pray before you speak, and being quick to listen rather than quick to react are practical ways to train your heart. If anger has led to harsh words or actions, seek forgiveness quickly from God and from others, and do not let it linger overnight.

We pray together for you now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus and lift up our brother before Your throne of grace. You see the struggle with anger and how strong it still feels, and You know the desire for calm and victory. Lord, we ask You to fill this heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and to grant renewed strength through Your Holy Spirit. Help us to put away all anger and wrath and to put on patience, kindness, and self-control. Teach us to be slow to anger and quick to forgive, just as You have forgiven us in Christ. When temptation comes, remind us to be swift to hear and slow to speak, and give us the power to rule our spirit. Bring calm where there has been turmoil, and bring victory where there has been defeat. We trust that You who began a good work will complete it. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, amen.

We encourage you to continue to abide in Christ daily through prayer and the Word, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7. Keep calling on Jesus, and He will be your calm and your victory.

Thank you for sharing this so honestly. Wanting calm and victory over anger is a good and humble desire, and we are grateful you brought it to God so directly.

We hear that it still feels strong even as you are praying. That can be discouraging, when you want to be calm and the feeling rises anyway. It does not mean God is not listening or that you are alone in the fight. He sees the effort you are making to turn to Him instead of just giving in to the anger.

One thing that has helped many who wrestle in this same way is to have a simple plan for the moment anger starts to rise. If you are able, quietly step away for a minute, name honestly to God what you are feeling, and ask Him to help you respond in a way that honors Him. Later, when you are calm, you might jot down what was happening right before the anger flared, so you can begin to notice patterns and bring those specific moments to Him in prayer. If you have a trusted pastor or mature friend, inviting them to pray with you and check in can also make the struggle less isolating.

Father, we lift our brother to You and thank You that he is seeking You for calm and victory. Give him Your peace in heated moments, wisdom to pause, and strength to respond with grace. Keep shaping his heart to be more like Jesus day by day, and remind him of Your nearness and patience as he grows. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest cry against the strong power of anger is itself a mercy, for it shows that grace is striving within you against the flesh and will not let you rest content with sin. Do not despair because the battle still feels fierce. The Lord often withholds the full sense of calm till we have learned to pray in downright earnest, and the power that wins the victory in prayer has its real basis in the love of Christ Himself.

Remember that victory is not first of all your own attainment but Christ's. I am sure that Jesus will win the victory, for He has poured out His soul unto death and borne the fierce anger of God against sin that we might be saved from eternal woe. Because He has done this, when He asks the Father, give them power and victory, it must be done. He wins the victory and He will not enjoy it alone, He will glorify His people and divide the spoil with them. You may look at His pierced hands and believe that you shall one day wave the palm branch of victory and wear the white robe, for He keeps His own.

Yet there is a holy discipline in this warfare. If it is our habit never to suffer guilt to lie upon our consciences, but to go as soon as we are sensible of a fault and admit it before the Lord, asking pardon for Jesus sake, there will be no great amount of damage done and the Lord will subdue what we confess. Bring your anger into the light before Him without excuse. Own it, lament it, and plead the blood that cleanses from all sin. Then learn the art of overcoming evil with good, and the blessed art of overcoming Christ Himself with the eyes of prayer. Tell Him, Lord, I am in great straits and I cannot master myself, be Thou my Master. Such pleading overcomes Him who is Goodness itself.

A calm that comes from mere suppression or from a heart grown cold and stagnant is more dangerous than a tempest, but the calm which the Spirit works is a living peace, watchful and tender. Pray for that. Pray that the Spirit would make you slow to anger, swift to hear, and that the meekness of Christ would rule in your heart.

We will pray with you now. O Lord our God, look upon this Thy servant who longs for deliverance from anger. Forgive wherein passion has conceived sin in thought or word or deed, and wash it away through the precious blood of Jesus. Pour Thy Spirit upon this troubled heart and bring a holy calm, not the calm of indifference but the peace of Christ reigning within. Give victory, Lord, daily victory over the hasty temper and the rising wrath, that evil may be overcome with good and Thy name be honoured in all things. Teach this soul to overcome by prevailing prayer, and to find strength in Him who has already overcome for us. Keep and sanctify to the end, till the everlasting song is sung in glory. In the high and worthy name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
