It is a mercy to have an errand of prayer, for prayer is the poor man’s ready help, and our heavenly Father delights to hear the concerns of His children, be they great or small. Your friend is in the hospital for a procedure, and you rightly bring this before the throne of grace. Remember that there is a Friend that sticketh closer than a brother, the Lord Jesus Christ, who is the great Physician both of souls and of bodies. Hospitals of earthly bricks may hold the sick, but there is a St. Cross Hospital built by the pierced hands of the Saviour, where every sin-sick soul may find healing. Commit your friend into His wise and tender care, for He who was the Friend of publicans and sinners will not pass by one who is laid low. He loves at all times, and in the hour of weakness He proves Himself a Friend indeed.
As for your cat and the frog, I am not ignorant of the affections we hold for the creatures that share our homes. The Lord Jesus, who fed the sparrows and clothed the lilies, holds all life in His hand. Not a tiny bird falls to the ground without His notice, and no frog hops beyond the circle of His providence. Cast this small anxiety upon Him, for He careth for you. Pray, and leave the matter with your Father, who preserves both man and beast. He has kept you in safety from many a hidden snare, and you may trust Him to keep your pets also from what would harm them.
In all these things, see that you have Christ as your own Friend, the Friend of your soul. A man may have many well-wishers, but only Jesus can be the Friend for time and eternity. If you have Him, you have a Friend in the hospital room, a Friend in the quiet anxiety of your home, and a Friend who will never forsake. Bring your friend, your cat, and your own heart to Him in humble, childlike prayer. The Poor Man’s Friend is rich in mercy; He will hear you.
