Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You ask prayers for a job interview, for health, and for safety. These things are not wrong to request; the body needs care, and honest labor is pleasing to God when done for the common good and not merely to heap up riches. Yet let your chief anxiety be for the soul. For what will it profit you if the interview succeeds and your health flourishes, but your inward man languishes in neglect? I have seen men in bonds rejoice more than the wealthy in their palaces, because the fear of God had cast out all dread. There is nothing truly dreadful to him who stands on that unshaken Rock. Whether you gain this position or not, whether you are sick or well, virtue is invincible and cannot be hindered by any outward thing, only let your soul be noble and your hope set on heaven.
When you pray for health, do so with the aim of serving God and your neighbor, not to make provision for the flesh to fulfil its lusts. Many use strength and ease only to kindle wantonness; be not one of them. As for safety, remember that the apostles were never safer than when they were in perils, counting it all joy to suffer for Christ. If you belong to Him, nothing can harm your true life. I join you in these petitions, but I would have you seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness. Then, whether the interview brings success or disappointment, whether you walk in health or lie on a sickbed, you will possess a peace that the world cannot give nor take away.
