Addiction

Thank you for your honesty in sharing this struggle and for asking for prayer. It takes humility to bring this into the light, and God hears that cry for freedom.

Scripture describes the pull of this world in three ways, the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life. That pattern is as old as the garden, when the forbidden fruit looked good to eat, beautiful to see, and desirable for making one wise like God. The same threefold attack came against Jesus when He was tempted to turn stones to bread to satisfy physical hunger. The enemy still works the same way today.

We live in a time when the opportunities to feed those desires are everywhere. Images and media that inflame lust are on every screen and billboard, and the flood of that material makes the battle feel constant. But God's word reminds us that all that is in the world and its lusts are passing away. What feels powerful and urgent in the moment does not last, and it cannot satisfy the soul.

God created our bodies and He created sexual desire, and He declared that sexual union is for the lifelong covenant of marriage between one man and one woman, where the two become one. Outside of that covenant, Scripture tells us to flee sexual immorality, not to manage it or reason with it, but to run from it as you would run from danger. The apostle Paul urges to flee youthful lusts for this reason.

There is a false idea of freedom that says freedom means being free to do whatever you feel. True freedom in Jesus Christ is different. It is the freedom not to have to do those things. When we use our freedom to indulge the flesh, we do not become more free, we become bound. That is what happened at the beginning when freedom was used to disobey God, and the result was bondage to sin. Many people learn this painfully, that what began as a choice becomes a master. The Bible warns not to be deceived on this point and says that no one living in ongoing sexual impurity has an inheritance in the kingdom of God apart from repentance, yet it also holds out complete forgiveness and cleansing through Jesus.

The good news is that Jesus came to open the prison to those who are bound. He alone can break the power of sin and give you the freedom not to be controlled by it. The apostle Paul said, all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any. Guarding that freedom means making deliberate choices not to place yourself under the power of anything that would enslave you.

Prayer is not a way to get God to bless our desires so we can consume them on ourselves. Prayer is aligning our hearts with His will and asking for His strength to do what is right. James says that many conflicts come from lust warring within us, and that friendship with the world is enmity with God. Turning to God means turning away from what wars against your soul.

I am praying for you now, that God will set you free by the power of His Spirit, that He will give you strength to flee temptation and to turn your eyes away from what feeds lust, that He will renew your mind with His word, and that He will surround you with help and accountability so you do not fight alone. Ask Him to fill the empty places with His presence, to teach you to love the freedom you have in Christ enough to guard it carefully, and to lead you into a life of purity that honors Him.

If you have not already, bring this struggle into the light with a trusted mature believer or pastor who can walk with you, and take practical steps to remove access to what triggers the fall. God is faithful to forgive and to cleanse, and He is able to make you stand. May He give you daily victory and restore to you the joy of walking free in Him.
