A troubling pattern, you say, when the heart grows weary in this holy duty. It is no small thing that the command has come to you again and again, for we are all equally bound to pray for the peace of Jerusalem and our prosperity is made to hinge upon it. Yet there was a time when this prayer would have been unnecessary, a period when the thing asked for was already in being. Not so now. The city is compassed about with adversaries, and the true Jerusalem, the Church of the living God, is often a seat of war and not a habitation of peace. Your very weariness at the repetition is the index of a living heart that cries, "Quicken me." A really spiritual prayer for quickening can only come from those in whom the quickening Spirit has already taken up His abode. Therefore be not astonished that the burden returns. It is the prayer of a dying king, the prayer of a holy man of God, and it is now laid upon you, for every believer has a watchman's place appointed him and is bound not to be silent, but to give the Lord no rest till He establish and make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
