A Satanic pattern?

As I go out into the world as we sometimes need to do,for years Ive been noticing a pattern,and now wonder about the spiritual meaning behind it.Alot of times I go out there are experience rudeness and disrespect.And it seems the whole time Im out,on certain days it just wont let up.Other days,even just a few days later,its a different vibe,for a period of time they may "lighten up."Then a day later,back to the rudeness and disrespect.So since the devil is the prince of the power of the air,wondering if these back and forth variations are caused by him,like he "stirs them up" at certain times,maybe for so reason eases up at others?

We hear your struggle and share your concern about the spiritual forces at work in the world. The Bible does indeed warn us that we are not wrestling against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, and against spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places (Ephesians 6:12). The enemy, Satan, seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he often works through the attitudes and actions of those who are not walking in the light of Christ.

The pattern you describe, cycles of rudeness and disrespect followed by brief periods of relief, could very well be influenced by spiritual opposition. The devil is a deceiver and a tempter, and he delights in stirring up strife, discord, and hostility. He may incite people to act in ways that are contrary to God’s love and peace, especially when believers are seeking to live out their faith in a world that often rejects Christ. However, we must also remember that people have free will, and their sinful nature can lead them to act in ways that are unkind or disrespectful, even without direct demonic influence.

The Bible tells us that the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one (1 John 5:19), but it also assures us that greater is He who is in us than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). We are called to put on the full armor of God so that we can stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11). This includes the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the readiness of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God (Ephesians 6:14-17).

When you encounter rudeness and disrespect, it is important to respond in a way that reflects Christ. Jesus taught us to bless those who curse us and pray for those who mistreat us (Luke 6:28). This does not mean we ignore or tolerate sin, but we respond with love, patience, and grace, trusting that God will work in the hearts of those who oppose Him. We must also guard our own hearts, ensuring that we are not allowing bitterness, anger, or resentment to take root, as these can give the enemy a foothold in our lives (Ephesians 4:26-27).

Let us pray together for you in this situation:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We lift up our brother/sister who is facing a pattern of rudeness and disrespect as they go out into the world. Lord, we know that the enemy seeks to discourage, distract, and destroy, but we also know that You are greater and more powerful than any scheme of the devil. We ask that You would strengthen and protect them as they navigate these challenging interactions.

Father, we pray that You would surround them with Your hedge of protection, shielding them from the attacks of the enemy. Give them discernment to recognize when spiritual forces are at work and the wisdom to respond in a way that honors You. Help them to put on the full armor of God each day, standing firm in faith and truth. When they encounter rudeness or disrespect, fill their hearts with Your peace and love, so they may respond with grace and kindness, reflecting the character of Christ.

Lord, we also pray for those who act in unkind ways. Soften their hearts, open their eyes to Your truth, and draw them to repentance and salvation. Let Your light shine in the darkness, and may Your love break through the hardness of their hearts. We ask that You would turn their hostility into opportunities for Your glory to be revealed.

Father, we rebuke the spirit of strife, discord, and disrespect in the name of Jesus. We command any demonic influence stirring up these attitudes to flee, for You have not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We declare that no weapon formed against Your child shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and we stand on Your promise that You will never leave nor forsake them (Hebrews 13:5).

We thank You, Lord, for Your faithfulness and for the victory we have in Christ. May our brother/sister walk in confidence, knowing that You are with them, guiding their steps and protecting their heart. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in your faith, trusting that God is with you in every situation. The enemy may seek to wear you down, but remember that God’s strength is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Lean on Him, and do not grow weary in doing good, for in due season you will reap if you do not faint (Galatians 6:9). Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2), and continue to walk in the light, even when the world around you is dark.

It is unsettling when the world feels hostile day after day, and we understand why you’d search for the spiritual meaning behind a pattern that seems to press in on you. You’re right that spiritual forces are real, and Scripture does describe Satan as the prince of the power of the air, so it’s not wrong to consider that element.

But we’ve also learned that there’s a real risk in giving the enemy too much credit. If we start interpreting every rude interaction as a direct demonic stirring, it can actually feed a sense of paranoia or discouragement, which is itself one of his favorite tools. Often, the simplest explanation is that people are hurting, distracted, or simply living out their own brokenness. The enemy doesn’t need to “stir them up” when so many already carry pain that spills out sideways.

What we’ve found helpful is to turn that moment of noticing into a cue: the next time you walk out the door and sense that harshness rising, pause inwardly and pray, “Lord, cover my heart with Your peace, and let Your kindness flow through me toward whoever I meet today.” You can even silently bless the rude person, not excusing the behavior, but refusing to let it set the temperature of your own spirit. Over time, that simple, steady response can break the hold that the pattern has on your attention, and you’ll begin to see more of what God is doing right in the middle of it all.

Lord Jesus, we ask for a quiet confidence in You for every errand and encounter. Shield this dear one’s heart from taking on the discouragement of others, and give them eyes to see Your goodness even in hard interactions. Let Your perfect love cast out any fear or obsession over what the enemy might be up to, and lead them into the daily peace that You have promised. Amen.

The opposition you describe fits well with what Scripture teaches of Satanic hindrances. The enemy often moves upon the minds of men to stir up rudeness and contempt, not always, but in sudden gusts of malice, as you have observed. When the world treats you with peculiar venom on certain days, you may be sure that the archenemy has been at work, for he vents his spite against those who bear the name of Christ. Yet let this very thing cheer you. A Christian minister once said he did not expect to be easy in a certain pastorate, or else he would not have come there. If Satan takes the trouble to stir up opposition against you, it is proof you are not on his side but are a nuisance to his kingdom. Count it a backhanded badge of your citizenship in Zion.

Do not, however, grow weary or sink into a state of spiritual slumber over these fluctuations. There is to be a combination of the active and the passive in the Christian, you must be able to endure and yet still work. The days when they “lighten up” are tokens of common grace, giving you breathing space to glean some spiritual nutriment and run your race with fresh patience. But do not set your heart on carnal ease; for who among us would have the pleasure of carnal ease if with it we are to have the shame of spiritual illegitimacy? Better to be in the thick of the fray, looking unto Jesus, than to be left unchallenged and prove ourselves no true child of God.

Remember, too, that the spiritual life which sustains you amidst all this rudeness is not of yourselves. By nature we are dead, utterly dead, and if any come to spiritual life, it must be by the quickening of God’s Spirit, vouchsafed to us sovereignly through the good will of God the Father. That life is maintained not by any act of your flesh, but by the spiritual receiving of Christ. When sin was put away, God put away cause for warfare; Christ has established a substantial peace between God and your soul, even when the external tempest rages. The devil may stir the air, but he cannot touch that sealed peace.

Look upon every respite as a sheaf of mercy, a handful of purposefully left grain for a gleaner. And when the storm returns, give no place to bewildered complaints about your own weakness. The Holy Spirit is able to work moral and spiritual transformations in you, strengthening the entire constitution of your inner man. The scarcest thing in the whole world is true spiritual light, and the world hates it where it is revealed, you carry that light into the marketplace. Proclaim the old, old story by your patient endurance, and let your very experience of these hindrances drive you nearer to the One who has overcome the world.

These back and forth variations of rudeness are indeed a satanic pattern. The devil stirs up the spirits of men, as once he incited that diabolical revel and lawless dancing which ended in the murder of the righteous. He delights to set his trophy on the table of our daily encounters, using the tongues of others to wound. Yet do not marvel at this, for affliction is a great good, thrusting us into the narrow way. When men reproach you and speak all manner of evil against you without cause, you have reason to rejoice and leap for joy, because your reward in heaven is great.

When you go out, do not take with you the satanic art of the world. Learn to sing psalms in your heart; those who sing satanic songs are filled with an unclean spirit, but the psalm fills you with the Holy Spirit and becomes your spiritual drink, making you cheerful without worldly intoxication. Let your soul be adorned with the beauty that Christ loves, not with the coloring of retaliatory anger. The little child, set in the midst of us, is pure from envy and vainglory and longing for the first place; possess that simplicity and artless lowliness, and the rudeness of others will not pierce you.

Consider also the talent entrusted to you. You are not uninstructed or poorer than Peter and John, who were unlearned men yet did all for the common advantage. Nothing is so pleasing to God as to live for the common good. Therefore, when you go out, let your response be a contribution of gentleness and patience for your neighbor’s benefit, even if he seems undeserving. The apostles returned to Jerusalem where the tyranny of the bad was greatest, doing nothing without a purpose. So your journeys, even into rude company, are not wasted; they are opportunities to testify by your conduct to the heavenly pattern. For the Church is heavenly, nothing else than Heaven, and we are called to live now by that rule. Keep that pattern before your eyes, and you will not be shaken by the shifting moods of the world.

You are noticing something real. There are times when the atmosphere around you seems charged with hostility, and then it lifts, only to return. Scripture tells us the devil is indeed the prince of the power of the air, and he can stir up opposition against those who belong to Christ. When you walk out your door, you are stepping onto a battlefield, not just a sidewalk. That pattern of rudeness and disrespect, especially when it feels relentless and targeted, often points to a spiritual attack.

The first thing you must do is recognize what is happening. The enemy rarely announces himself; he works through people and circumstances in ways that seem ordinary. But when the barrage is persistent and the timing feels orchestrated, you are probably not dealing merely with bad moods. Nehemiah's builders faced the same thing. As soon as the wall began to rise, their enemies launched commando-style raids to wear them down. The workers grew exhausted and afraid. If you do not recognize this as a tactic of the enemy, you will end up reacting in the flesh, getting angry, defending yourself, or sinking into despair, and that is exactly what he wants.

Once you recognize the attack, you can respond with the weapons God has given you. Nehemiah prayed, and then he posted a guard. He set the people by families with swords and spears and bows, and he kept a trumpeter at his side. Half worked while half stood watch. They built with a trowel in one hand and a sword in the other. For you, this means you do not stop doing the good you are called to do, but you do it prayerfully, with your spiritual armor on. The sword of the Spirit is the word of God, and the shield of faith will quench the fiery darts of the evil one. Before you go out, ask the Lord to cover you and to give you His peace. When the rudeness comes, instead of taking it personally, wield the gospel of peace: bless those who curse you, and do not return evil for evil. That disarms the enemy’s scheme.

There is also a very practical danger: repeated experiences like these can carve deep grooves in your mind, creating a pattern of expectation. A knitter can knit without looking because the brain has learned the movements so well they become automatic. In the same way, if you start expecting rudeness every time you go out, you will become hypervigilant, and small things will feel like all-out assaults. That mental and emotional exhaustion is another layer of the attack. The enemy wants you to feel that the whole world is against you so that you will withdraw or lash out. Do not let that pattern take hold. Instead, set your mind on what is true: you are hidden with Christ in God, and the hostility aimed at you is often hostility aimed at the light shining through you.

Remember that this world is in open rebellion against its Maker, and the prince of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers. Their rudeness may have nothing to do with you personally; you are simply crossing the path of people who are captives to sin and a spiritual darkness they do not understand. Jesus told us that if the world hates us, it is because it hated Him first. So do not be shocked. But also do not think the ebb and flow is random. Satan is not omniscient; he cannot sustain an all-out assault at every moment. There will be days of reprieve, and those are gifts from God to refresh your soul. Use them to rest in the Lord and to strengthen your inner man for the next wave.

In the end, you are building something more lasting than a wall of stone. You are walking out a life of faith in a crooked generation. Keep your trowel in one hand and your sword in the other. Set a watch over your heart and mouth. And when the trumpet sounds, when you sense that familiar tide of antagonism rising, stop and pray, even silently in the moment. Entrust yourself to the One who judges justly. The enemy’s pattern is designed to make you quit, but God’s pattern is to make you stand.
