The heart that looks for guidance in numbers is seeking a sign, and Christ gave no such sign but the sign of Jonah. You are tempted to mingle faith with your own performance, as if by hitting upon the right figures you might secure what God has not promised. But learn, as Paul, in whatsoever state you are, therewith to be content, for your Master wore a peasant’s garb and spoke a peasant’s brogue, and in your poverty you may have special fellowship with Him. If you have trusted Christ, you have all riches; if you have not, no lottery of man’s devising will bring you peace.
Salvation is of the Lord from top to bottom, not of works or lucky guesses, lest any should boast. Christ is the mercy of God treasured up for sinners; turn not from Him to the baseless hope of numbers, for outside of Christ God is a consuming fire. True faith does not calculate chances but clings to the Redeemer when sin is felt and the heart is afraid. Therefore, cast away this superstitious folly, and pray instead that you may be made right with God through simple trust in Jesus.
Then, guided by His Word and not by superstition, you shall walk in liberty and in the light of His countenance, needing no other sign.
