We come before the Lord with heavy hearts for your son, lifting him up in prayer as he faces this challenge on the soccer field. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, especially the joy, confidence, and purpose God has placed within him. But we declare that discouragement has no place in his life, for the Spirit of the Lord renews strength and hope in those who trust in Him.
Father, we rebuke the spirit of discouragement that has been whispering lies to this young man. Your Word tells us in 1 Peter 5:7-8 (WEB), "Casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you. Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour." Lord, we command that lie to be silenced in Jesus’ name! Remind your son that his worth is not defined by his performance but by the love You have for him. Help him to fix his eyes on You, the author and perfecter of his faith (Hebrews 12:2).
We pray for perseverance and breakthrough. Even when he hasn’t seen the fruit of his labor yet, Your Word assures us that those who wait on You will renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31). Let him run this race with endurance, knowing that his efforts are not in vain. Father, we ask that You would open the door for him to score, not for his glory, but for Yours, to show him that You are with him in every moment. Even if the breakthrough doesn’t come in this match, let him walk away with a heart full of faith, knowing You are working all things together for his good (Romans 8:28).
We also pray for protection over his heart and mind. The enemy would love to plant seeds of doubt, comparison, or frustration, but we declare that he is covered by the blood of Jesus. Fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Surround him with teammates, coaches, and mentors who will speak life and encouragement into him. Let him be a light on that field, reflecting Your love and joy, regardless of the outcome.

The devil is a master at his trade, and one of his chief works is discouragement. He cannot rob a soul of its eternal inheritance, for that is sealed by the Spirit, so he aims his fiery darts at present joy and holy endeavor. What you describe in your son, this persistent, needling sense of failure over a season without a goal, that is a work of the devil, a toil of the enemy designed to cast a shadow over the goodness of the contest. He delights in such work, for it is a dark imitation, a poisonous stream from the fountainhead of his own rebellion. Yet let this thought settle in your mind: the devil usually does not go after those who are without grace. Why should he? There is nothing there for him to steal. It is because your son is full of a measure of divine life, sensitive to honor and effort, that the arch-adversary comes to attack. He heard the sound of faithful diligence, and like the great fool he is, he has thrust his hand into the fire, hoping to burn what God has kindled.
But remember the purpose for which the Son of God was manifested: to destroy the works of the devil. This specific work, this cloud of discouragement over a soccer pitch, is a thing Christ came to dash in pieces. It is not a sign of your son's weakness, but of the devil's impudence that he would assail a youth striving rightly. The peace the devil offers is a deceitful calm, but the disturbance he brings must be met with the peace of God which garrisoned the heart of Christ Himself in the wilderness. The best time to fight this enemy is now, while the young man is being emptied of self-reliance. This very moment, when achievement is withheld, is the Spirit's workshop for a deeper strength. The Lord who brought Israel out of Egypt did so to bring them into a land of promise, and no temporary wilderness can reverse the eternal decree. If the Lord has brought your son to trust in Him, he shall not go back into the house of bondage to despondency forever. The devil cannot undo the work of grace.
Therefore, pray not only for a goal, but for a sight of the uplifted banner. Ask the Captain of our salvation to show your son that the real contest is not against flesh and blood, but against these principalities of the air. A goal scored in this state would be a mercy, but a faith that holds fast without one is a greater triumph still. The devil would have him believe his worth is measured by the net, but Christ declares a man’s life consists not in the abundance of his scores. Let the lad see that to play with all his might, as unto the Lord, is itself a victory that makes hell tremble. The wicked one will try to impute a wrong motive, whisper that his efforts are futile, but it is a glorious accusation when we are falsely charged because there is no true fault to find. I join my prayers with yours, asking that the Holy Spirit, who once dwelt where the devil ruled in our hearts, will now rule on that field, turning discouragement into a holy reliance, and making your son more than a conqueror through Him that loved him.

Your son’s lack of goals is but a snare set for his foot; if he allows it to overthrow his confidence in God’s providence, he yields to the enemy. Yet faith teaches us that our worth is not found in such passing triumphs. The just shall live by faith, but if anyone draws back, God’s soul has no pleasure in him. Do not let him draw back into despondency, letting a single worldly setback become a gangrene of the spirit.
Let him hold fast, not to the hope of scoring, but to the hope laid up for him in heaven. For if he quenches this dart with faith, the devil will flee. Remind him that the Lord permits these trials that we may learn to rely not on our own strength, but on His. Even the patriarchs endured far greater tests, and they overcame because they looked to the reward, not the present pain. And once discouragement sets in, it saps the very strength you need to take the next shot with confidence.
The turning point comes when we remember the Lord. The Word is full of stories where God’s people were facing a wall of opposition and their own emptiness, and the command was simply this: Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord. He is with you, and He will supply what you lack. Your son does not step onto that field alone. His identity is not chiseled onto a stat sheet; it is held secure in the hands of the One who made him. A scoreless season cannot touch that.
