We hear your heartache and concern for your loved one, and we stand with you in fervent prayer before the throne of grace. The grip of addiction is a heavy burden, but we know that nothing is impossible with God. We rebuke the spirit of addiction in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, for He alone has the power to break every chain and set the captive free.
The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." We declare this truth over your loved one, that God is making a way of escape, even now.
We also pray for your family, that you would be strengthened in faith and unity. In James 5:16, we are reminded, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective." We stand on this promise, believing that your prayers, combined with ours, will move the heart of God.
Father God, in the name of Jesus Christ, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up this precious soul who is bound by the chains of addiction. We ask that You would break every stronghold, remove every desire for these substances, and replace them with a hunger and thirst for You. Lord, draw them back to their family, back to Your love, and back to the purpose You have for their life. Surround them with Your angels, protect them from harm, and let them feel the weight of Your conviction in a way that leads to repentance and restoration.
We pray for wisdom and strength for this family, that they would not grow weary in doing good, but would trust in Your perfect timing. Give them the words to speak life and truth, and fill their home with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. My heart is stirred by your request, and I join with you in prayer even now. The cry of a family for a child who has wandered into the far country of sin and self-destruction is a cry that moves the Father’s heart, and it shall move mine as well. Did not the father, while the prodigal was yet a great way off, see him and run and fall on his neck and kiss him? That same watchful love beholds your loved one, and those eyes of mercy are fixed upon him at this very moment. Cease not to plead the promise, for the Lord devises means that His banished be not expelled from Him. The voice of God still cries, “Return, return,” and I am persuaded that He will bring His wanderers back.
Your prayer reaches up to the throne, and I encourage you to press it with urgency. The prodigal in the parable had come to himself and resolved to arise and go to his father, and that turning often begins with the prayers of faithful souls like yours. It is not for us to say when, but the gospel demand is always “return now.” Life is so uncertain; we dare not delay. But do not let your heart sink into despair. I have seen with my own eyes a young man, his face marked with sin and wretchedness, brought low indeed, and yet in a moment the Lord gave perfect reconciliation through Christ. When the sinner turns, there is no reproach, no cold reception; the Father falls on his neck in much love, and those kisses mean full forgiveness, full restoration, overflowing comfort. Before the family fellowship began, the father kissed him. So will it be for your son, your brother, your beloved, when he comes home, it shall be as if he had never gone away.
Pray on, then, with holy confidence. The Lord’s message to the backslider is not one of condemnation but simply this, “Return, return, return.” And to you who wait and weep, He says, “I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten.” Look to the cross where Jesus Christ has made the sinner’s peace. There is no drug too powerful, no chain too strong, for the grace that seeks and saves. The Father who ran to meet the prodigal is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He will yet give you cause to say, “This my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found.” Let faith hold fast to that expectation, and may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with all patience and hope until that day dawns.

The very affliction that tears at your heart may be the bitter drug God uses to wean the one you love from the deadly sweetness of sin. When a child clings to the breast past its season, parents anoint it with something foul to break the longing. Do not despise this severity; it is not cruelty but a strange mercy. You see only the drugs and the absence. God may be making that way of escape so repulsive, so full of misery, that the soul finally recoils and runs toward home.
You pray for deliverance from the drugs and a return to your family. These are natural longings. But set your hope higher. The martyrs refused deliverance from torture to obtain a better resurrection. The true goal is not merely a sober body and a seat at your table again. It is a soul snatched from the poison of the evil one and brought into the full adoption of sons. The sign of the cross has quenched poisonous drugs before. It has healed bites beyond all human remedy. Christ broke the curse to promote us to sonship. Lay hold of that promise. Pray not just for a life freed from chemical chains, but for a life hidden in Christ, a new creation where the prodigal sits down at the Father’s feast and finds more honor than those who never strayed.

The prodigal son, who had sunk into the filth of swine, was met with a robe, a ring, and a celebration.
