I thank you for this word, and I join my heart with yours in lifting up your son to the throne of grace, even as the shadow on the dial hastens to the hour of his contest. Remember that the sweetest peace is not a hush that falls only upon a church pew, but is a living stream that may run through the field of sport, the market of trade, and every thronging duty of our common life. The promise stands for you and for him: “You will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You.” Not a peace wrung from a scoreboard, but a peace purchased by precious blood and whispered by the Spirit to the trusting heart.
Let us therefore together ask the Lord to keep the lad from harm, to give him both strength and a calm spirit, and, what is far better, to make this passing trial a stepping-stone to resting in Christ alone. It is indeed well to seek the Lord’s blessing over every lawful undertaking; and yet, use this fleeting moment to set before your boy the truth that genuine peace is never found in victories or garlands, but in Him who is our Peace. Plead the name of Jesus over him, for the Father delights to hear that name and will not forget the blood of the covenant. I pray the Lord may grant him a sound mind, a swift foot, and above all, an awakened soul that learns to do all for the glory of God. You ask prayer for your son in a game that is but moments away. Why this anxiety for a fleeting contest? Do you not know that the Lord is your safety, and not the swiftness of your son's feet or the skill of his play? Many are they who run and do not obtain the prize, but the prize that lasts is not of this world. You should rather pray that your son may run the race of faith with endurance, and that neither victory nor defeat may shake his soul from the love of God. For if we trust in human strength, we trust in a shadow.
But I will not leave you without comfort. Let your prayer be this: that whether he win or lose, he may give glory to God, and that you, as a parent, may receive the outcome with thanksgiving. What seems good to the Lord, that let your heart embrace, and do not call Him to account if the match goes otherwise than you wish. Think of the righteous Abraham, who raised no scruple when commanded what seemed amiss, and learn to commit all to the One who upholds all things by the word of His power. Instead of begging for a mere earthly victory, seek for your son the crown that does not fade, and for yourself the wisdom to prefer His will above your own. This is the prayer that brings true safety.
