Soccer

We lift up your son and his upcoming soccer match to the Lord, trusting in His sovereign care over all things. We know how much this game means to him, and we ask that God would grant him strength, focus, and wisdom on the field. May he play with integrity, sportsmanship, and joy, honoring the Lord in both effort and attitude.

Father, we pray that You would protect him from injury and give him the endurance he needs. Let him play not for his own glory, but as a testimony of Your goodness. Whether the outcome is victory or defeat, may he learn perseverance, humility, and trust in You. Remind him that his worth is not found in his performance but in being Your beloved child.

We also ask that You would guard his heart from pride or discouragement. Help him to see this match as an opportunity to grow in discipline and character, not just skill. May he be a light to his teammates and coaches, reflecting Christ in all he does.

Lord, we commit this game into Your hands. Give your son peace and confidence, knowing that You are with him. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

"Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ." (Colossians 3:23-24 WEB)

We’re praying with you for your son and this match that means so much right now. Even in something as ordinary as a soccer game, God cares about the details of our lives and the things our children pour their hearts into.

It is clear you love your son deeply, that you would reach out for prayer shows how much you carry him in your heart. We are glad to stand with you in that. As you watch or wait for news, you might take a slow breath and remind yourself that his worth isn’t riding on a final score, and neither is your peace. He is held by a Father who never takes His eyes off him, win or lose. That doesn’t make the nerves disappear, but it can steady us underneath them.

Lord Jesus, we lift up this son to You right now. Give him focus, courage, and sound judgment on the field. Keep him safe from injury, and let him play with joy and good sportsmanship. Calm his mom or dad’s heart, replace anxiety with a quiet trust in Your care. Whatever the outcome, use this day to build his character and to draw this family closer to each other and to You. In Your name we pray, amen.

To bring even a sporting contest before the throne of grace reveals a heart that understands all things must be hallowed by prayer. It is well that you seek the Lord for your son.

Yet let us examine the nature of the petition. There is a kind of prayer that is mere self-will dressed in pious language, and such prayer, as I have often warned, has its chariot wheels torn off by self-conceit. The great question is this, is the burden of your cry for your son’s success according to the flesh, or for his quickening in the ways of God? The prayer which prevails pleads the promises, and what promise have we that a young man shall strike a ball into a net with greater skill? None. But we have mighty promises to plead for his soul. Intercession for our children is indeed the sweetest prayer God ever hears; remember how Abraham cried, “O that Ishmael might live before thee!” That is the model, not merely that he might live, or triumph in a passing contest, but that he might live before God.

Seek, therefore, first and with greatest earnestness, the spiritual good of your son. It may be that the Lord will grant him success in this match, but answers often come in ways we do not expect. The real answer to your prayer might be a humbling loss that teaches him more than a proud victory. Lay hold upon the promise that God will be his God, and then spread your request for his temporal affairs, but always with this condition, that God’s will be done and his glory promoted. Be not like the elder son who questioned the father’s goodness; rather, offer the prayer that reaches the heart of God, a working-man’s prayer full of holy importunity. And whatever the result, set your heart upon this, that whether in winning or losing, your son might be quickened in God’s way and made a true servant of the Most High.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

I have received your request for prayer for your son’s upcoming match. I will indeed remember him before the Lord, yet why do we set such store by an earthly contest? The soul’s race is far greater, and its prize an imperishable crown. Let us pray with assiduity, like the Canaanite woman who would not be silenced, that your son may run with endurance the race set before him, not chiefly on the field, but in the life of faith.

Teach him that any skill he possesses is a talent entrusted to him by God, to be used for the common good and to the glory of God, not for vain applause. Whether he triumphs or falls short, no happiness can equal the joy of looking boldly upon Christ. Let him honor you, his mother, by a pure and upright life, even as Christ in His dying hour knit the beloved disciple to His own mother in charity, showing us the reverence we owe.

So pray for him, yes, but far more that he may fear God, that he may play with integrity and thanksgiving, and that whatever befalls, he may gain the victory that truly matters.

I am grateful you shared this request with me. It can be tempting to think certain moments in our lives are too ordinary or small for God’s attention, but His word gently nudges us never to despise the day of small things. Every part of our lives matters to Him because we matter to Him. So yes, let’s bring your son and this important match before the Lord together.

As I pray, I will ask for his safety, for a clear mind, and for him to use the abilities God has given him in a way that honors his Maker. But I also want to encourage you both to see that prayer is not just about getting a desired outcome. True prayer begins with God, stirs His purposes in our hearts, and then echoes back to Him in trust. We can honestly pour out our hopes, but we also learn to rest in His will, knowing He loves your son perfectly and sees far beyond this single match.

Think of the father in the story of the prodigal son, watching the road day after day, aching with love and hope. That is a faint picture of how our heavenly Father gazes upon us. Whether the final whistle brings joy or tears, His love does not waver. He watches over your son with that same patient, steadfast care.

You are able to call on God as Father because of the relationship Jesus has secured for you through His death and resurrection. So pray boldly. I will be lifting up your son sincerely, trusting that God’s good plan will unfold and that your family will know His peace, whatever the scoreboard shows.
