The cry of your heart has pierced the heavens, though your name be hidden in question marks; the Lord knoweth them that are His, and the faintest whisper of a soul in need is music in the ear of the Most High. Strong prayers shall ascend for your health and your eyesight from this very hour, for we are bidden to bear one anotherβs burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ. Yet let not your trust linger in the prayers of men, but press through the crowd to the Great Physician Himself. There is a tree whose leaves are for the healing of the nations, and its fruit is sweet to the taste; that Tree is Jesus, and from His lowest boughs healing virtue drips for every malady of body and soul. Only touch Him, and the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, and the palsied take up their bed. Your sickness, be it dark as a midnight without stars, is not beyond His skill; He who made the eye, shall He not mend it? He who breathed life into clay can restore what time and affliction have marred.
Yet ponder this: the Lord often works healing side by side with pardon, for sin and sickness are twin shadows in a fallen world. How many came to Christ for bodily cure and found their souls washed whiter than snow! Seek first, then, His forgiving mercy; let your prayer arise out of the low dungeon of felt unworthiness. Jacob laid hold upon God with arguments, pleading the promise, and though he limped away, his prayer was answered in a fashion he did not expect. Your healing may not come as you imagine, but it will come as He designs, either here, in the land of the living, or there, where no inhabitant shall say, βI am sick.β Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen thine heart. The prayer that staggers, the petition that scarce can shape itself into words because the mind is at its witβs end, is often the prayer that moves the hand of Omnipotence.
Entreat Him with the boldness of the palsied manβs friends, who broke up the roof to lower him into the presence of Jesus. Their faith was active, inventive, obtrusive, and the Lord saw their faith, not as a rude intrusion but as a sweet savour. So come, bringing nothing but your emptiness, for the power to heal is ever present with Him who ever liveth to intercede. The church below shall besiege the throne on your behalf, but Christ above pleads with deeper groans than ours. Rest in this: He heareth, He careth, He will answer. Only believe, and according to your faith it shall be unto you. And if the answer tarry, count it not neglect; the silence of God is not denial, but the husbandry of patience, that faith may put forth deeper roots.
Go now to your chamber and there spread your case before Him, taking His own promises as your warrant. Say, βThou hast said, I am the Lord that healeth thee; heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed; save me, and I shall be saved.β And when healing flows, whether suddenly or drop by drop, let your lips be filled with praise, for the tongue that is slow to thank is a rude leech upon the mercy of God. May the Sun of Righteousness rise upon you with healing in His wings, scattering every cloud, and may you soon testify before the great congregation of the restoring grace that has turned your darkness into noonday. Amen.
