Cease from scanning the skies for a chart written in stars, for such things belong to the heathen who seek after signs. The only map you need for the journey to the Celestial City is the infallible Word of the living God. There you find the sure testimony: "Whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed." You cry out, "Jeesus on Herra," and it is well that you confess Jesus as Lord. But let not your confidence rest upon a heavenly diagram or a token from Jerusalem, but upon that same Lord who was lifted up that He might draw all men unto Himself. The salvation that is worth having is God's salvation from first to last, planned in the eternal counsels, purchased by the blood of the Lamb, and applied by the Spirit. It is not a matter of lineage or outward observances, but of the heart's reliance upon Christ alone. Do you desire to know whether your name is written among the living in Zion? Then look not to the constellations but to the cross. If you are trusting in Him, you have already passed from death unto life.

What need then of a sign in the stars? The true pattern of heavenly things is ours: as we have borne the image of the earthy by doing earthly deeds, so let us bear the image of the heavenly by a manner of life meet for heaven. The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob has glorified His Servant Jesus, and by clinging to Him we become fellow-citizens of those in heaven. Do not look for a sign traced in bloodlines or a map; the apostles themselves thrust away such glory, saying, Why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our own power or holiness we had made this man to walk? God’s care is not proven by a personal address of rejoicing tailored to your name. Our conversation is in heaven, yet we live here, and heavenly things are ours.

And why do you wait for heaven to address you first? Is it not the utmost folly, when we might reap so large a profit, to give up the gain? If you suppose God is waiting for some gesture from you, for this very reason spring forward to Him, that you may win the crown. Do not imitate the senselessness of those who, blaming another for waiting to be greeted, do the very same thing themselves. The disorder of demanding signs makes men covenant-breakers, without natural affection. Even beasts have family feeling, but these become more ferocious.

Seek the heavenly bread instead, and cast away all worldly care. The sacrifice does not disperse into ashes; it makes the things placed there bright. The altar is heavenly, the hymns are heavenly: we below utter in concert with the divine choirs of bodiless powers. What more would you have? They have the keys of heaven; how can all be other than heavenly? Let us then with one mouth and one will glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and He will keep you in His care, as our conversation already is in heaven.
